CBS New York asks Professor Randolph McLaughlin about discrimination case

CBS New York came to the Pace Law campus to speak with Professor Randolph McLaughlin, an expert on civil rights, about a case in Yonkers where state officials removed a male athlete from the girls volleyball team. Yonkers does not have a boys volleyball team. The athlete, Jensen Daniel, had played with the team last year.

“I think it’s discrimination in that this matter should be pressed to another level of review to determine whether or not this young man should be able to play on this team,” said McLaughlin. “I think, what’s going on here is the other schools apparently don’t like the fact that this Yonkers team is doing so well.”

Are letters of recommendation required?

We require two letters of recommendation from individuals who know you well and can attest to your capacity to succeed in the study of law. Since law school is an academic endeavor, recommendations from professors who can evaluate your skills are an asset. However, quality and content are more important than who writes the recommendation. Therefore, if you have not established positive relationships with faculty or if you have been out of school for a few years ask for recommendations from others that can speak to your character, abilities, etc.

Help your letter writers by supplying them with a resume or a transcript or a copy of your personal statement. Two recommendations are required by Pace; one or two additional ones will be accepted but are not necessary. Letters must be sent to the Law School Admission Council so they are added to your Credential Assembly Service (CAS).

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY

Ibrahim A. Gambari, a scholar-diplomat, was appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping, as Joint Special Representative of the Africa Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur, effective 1 January 2010. In July 2011, Ambassador Gambari was designated Joint Chief Mediator, ad interim, in charge of the ongoing negotiations between the Government of Sudan and the Darfuri opposition movements.

Ambassador Gambari was Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on the Iraq Compact and Other Issues from 2007 to 2009. On 22 May 2007, the Secretary-General entrusted him with the Good Offices Mandate on Myanmar. Ambassador Gambari was also Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, from 2005 to 2007; UN Special Adviser on Africa (1999-2005), and Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Mission to Angola (2002-2003).

THE PACE COMMUNITY LAW PRACTICE IS UP AND RUNNING!

The Pace Community Law Practice is one of the first legal services office of its kind in the country. It is a legal residency program that hires Pace Law graduates as Fellows who represent low and moderate income community members on a sliding scale basis under the close supervision of experienced attorneys. Initially, the PCLP is representing young immigrant “Dreamers” eligible for Deferred Action, and will continue to provide immigration and other civil legal services to the vastly underrepresented communities of the Hudson Valley

On Thursday, September 6th, the Pace Law School Center for Continuing Legal Education presented a spotlight on the OJ Simpson trial, with special guest speakers from both the prosecution and the defense as well as relatives of Ron Goldman, one of the victims. The event was very well attended and proved to be an interesting discussion about one of America's most controversial cases.

But the seat of Westchester County is no slouch in the jobs department, with a bunch of large corporate offices (including the newly refurbished and ultra-chic headquarters of Heineken U.S.), an entrepreneurial spirit (it's the birthplace of Mark Zuckerberg), and top-test-scoring kids. When not working, folks like to try out the city's new bike paths, practice their swing at one of three golf courses, and jog on the trails at Silver Lake Preserve.
