Here is 7 months (more or less) of long manual labor and emotional sleepless nights! WEEEEE!

After completing Undertale back when it came out, I knew I had to animate something for it and pondered with who would make the best voice for any of the characters. My mind went right for Toriel and Rose Quartz from Steven Universe, and after dabbling with audio I basically set myself up to do this.

Boarded, animated, and composited in Toon Boom Harmony.

And Char Fenton did the FX cuz she’s great!

You know, sometimes you really can feel the love poured into a work. Every frame of this has so much heart, so much care and attention to detail, it is impossible for me to name just what captivated me about this animation.Perhaps it is Toriel as a character, who embodies everything people love about Undertale; unrelenting kindness and taking a chance on what we fear the most to get a better outcome for everyone. Taking the peaceful path and appreciating what we have, despite violence being so much easier. Couple that with the audio form Steven Universe, a show that refuses to have a shallow character antagonising the protagonist just for the sake of conflict and actually having multi-faceted characters, and this feels so wholesome. 

The audio and animation blend beautifully. You can see the transtions of every emotions running through Toriel; the regal exterior that breaks down in the face of motherhood, knowing full-well what the human child will have to face. But it is better for them to take that chance at living then forcing them to live with her in this self-imposed exile. Even embracing them and saying “I cannot wait for you to join them” holds so many meanings. She cannot wait. She wants this child to live, but she can’t wait for them to join them, because it would make letting them go all the harder to do. The human child especially, shines in emotions.They do not need to say a single word to know that, despite being a child, they know the full emotional gravity of their departure, but must continue and stay determined. 

This animation reminded me of something out of Don Bluth’s American Tale or The Land Before Time. Just the way Toriel speaks, her actions and emotions. This piece was beautiful, and encompasses everything that people love about Undertale–the dedication into the game Toby Fox poured into making such wonderful characters, and the beautiful reception of the fans to make such wonderful animations like this.

Frisk sighed in relief as the master chef had returned to take charge of her cooking. A roll of his eyes was sent her way again, blurting a "Whatever~" to her little taunt. He remained to stand at a safe distance, he smiled, nodding his head up and down quickly, the boy could definitely use something sweet this morning.

The time had come once she weakened the chocolate into the batter. All the ingredients she had collected easily told the boy that this girl knew her thing! He was a bit jealous~ He could smell the perfumed sweetness of the mix bathing his sense of smell. Mhmm, breakfast was going to be awesome if it smelled this great! He patiently waited for her to finish up what she was doing, seeing those pancakes stacked up and buttered with syrup made his mouth drool. Saliva drooped at the corner of his lip.

She wasn't done making pancakes it seemed. Frisk watched her spill another load of mixture onto the pan. He turned to see that the previous stacks were gifted with strawberries, honey, then more pancakes, adding whip cream, more strawberries, and icing, oh my!!! This breakfast was just too delicious! Frisk could feel his sweet tooth already pulse tasty surges within his mouth, the sight of these flapjacks topped with beautiful dressings caused it to do so.

“Alright~!,” shouted Frisk. He bolted out of the kitchen, running towards the table to which he pulled out a chair, and sat just like what the girl had ordered him to do. He was facing the direction from where she was, seeing her prepare to bring him his breakfast, licking his lips. “Bring me food~! Bring me food~!!!” The boy started pounding the table lightly with his left and right hand curled into fists. “Heh heh~! Thanks for making breafast for us today! Hurry up so we can dine together~” 

She made him so happy...it was...well...he was trying to ignore the little thought but maybe he actually...liked her? Liked her in a romantic sense. Whatever, Frisk thought. They’ve known each other not too long ago...but...she somehow made him feel fully comfortable with her.

Calling All Fans: Undertale-Themed Cookbook?

So, I posted this on the Undertale subreddit, but I thought I’d post it here too. I’d like to reach out to the budding Undertale community and see if anyone would be interested in a collaborative project. I know a lot of you folks love to draw or write, but if you enjoy cooking or baking (you don’t even need to be particularly good at it!) you might enjoy this creative project as well.

What I’m thinking is an Undertale-themed cook book. There is so much cooking and wacky foods in this game, there would be ample fodder for it.

It’d be pretty cool if the recipes came from everyone in the community. Different folks could choose what they want to invent a recipe for and we could collect them all in a book. We might even be able to do illustrations for the book if somebody wanted to– or photos of the recipes in the very least. Eventually we could create a free ebook!
