This article talks about why women are more at risk in natural disasters such as the recent earthquake in Nepal. Such risks can include death, severe injuries, vulnerability to post-disaster diseases and infections, and economic disempowerment. This of course does not mean that men don't face danger and challenges themselves during/after disasters. We’ve talked before about the importance of recognizing and addressing issues that affect women and children in particular during and after natural disasters. This article highlights some of them. “For women in particular, part of being safe during disasters — natural or otherwise — means ensuring safe birth, safety from unintended pregnancy, and safety from violence.”

Also, an FYI the article doesn’t mention: Sendai, Japan, which hosted the Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, was one of the worst-hit parts of Tohoku region during the 2011 9.0 earthquake and tsunami.

800,000 lose temp jobs, livelihood due to Hagupit, ILO to assist through emergency employment

An estimated 800,000 people have lost their jobs and livelihood after typhoon Hagupit, locally known as Ruby, damaged their means of livelihood or disrupted their seasonal jobs, the International Labor Organization said in a statement Wednesday.

According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), approximately 800,000 people lost their jobs and livelihood after typhoon Hagupit/Ruby.

"Eastern Visayas accounted for the highest share of affected workers, most of them are still recovering from income lost to super typhoon Haiyan, locally known as Yolanda." ILO is assisting with an emergency employment program.

CULASI EVACUATION CENTER: DONATIONS NEEDED Almost a month to the day after inauguration, the one-storey Culasi evacuation center in Barangay Camancijan sheltered people during Typhoon Ruby. However, it still needs additional materials such as beds, first aid kits and medicines, children's toys, kitchenware, and pails and dippers for the toilets and bathrooms. A second storey would double its capacity to shelter people and also expand the center's use. This Christmas season, please consider donating - every peso and dollar helps.
