Joy submitted to faithinhumanityr: (Thank you Joy, what a truly wonderful submission!)
There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who wait for what life has to give them, and those who choose to seize the day and make the most out of it. This man is an example of the latter. According to a Facebook post by Alamo at Ur Serbis, a policeman in Antique, he and his team were patrolling the area and conducting an information drive to prepare for Typhoon Ruby (international name: Haiyan), when they encountered an old, blind man. According to the post:
This man caught our attention while he was walking along the highway, pulling his cart loaded with sacks of sand. He is Manong Blas Lomugdang (locally known as Toto Balas), a senior citizen. What is amazing about him is that he is a blind man, but he is still working hard to earn a small amount for living and to support his sick mother. According to the post, the man hauls the sand from the seashore half a kilometer away, which he sells for P10 per sack. He’s been doing this every day to support his mother. According to the old man:
(It would be a shame if I beg. It would be great if the people you’re begging from would respect you, but what if they ignore you? It will just hurt my feelings. It’s much better if I work and earn money for myself. It would bring me honor.)
The man is already at a stage where he should retire, but his drive to still work, despite having a disability, is truly inspiring.
