Michael stared at the invitation Janet received in the mail. Well.. to be fair, it was sitting on the dining room table along with the stack of envelopes. He couldn’t process seeing your name on a piece of paper—no, he couldn’t process the fact that his name wasn’t on the card.
So caught on the item in front of him, he didn’t know his brothers came in from a session of basketball before they headed home. The sound of laughter immediately dies down once they see the current state Michael is in, all giving each other confusing glances. What could Michael be looking at?
Meanwhile, Michael was in his own world- it’s like he completely tuned the world out. Is this a dream?
"Um..." Jackie broke the silence. “You good, Michael?” he questioned. Michael heard him, but his eyes never left that paper; he gave Jackie no response to the point that the boys were feeling kind of eerie. Marlon made his way to Michael’s side to see what could make him still like a statue. As a result of reading the card, Marlon’s lips made an ‘o’ shape, and he quickly covered his mouth with his balled fist. To try to make sure Michael wouldn’t snap at his actions.
The reaction from Marlon is making the boys extremely nervous about what the news might be. “What’s going on?” Randy asked; the boys were slowly getting impatient to know what’s happening. A huge sigh escaped Michael’s lips, lifting his head up to see his brothers in his sight.
“She’s getting married," Michael announced in a depressing voice.
Nobody had anything to say; nobody could find the words to say something. It was no big surprise that Janet got invited; you two were close even after the breakup with Michael, but he never thought he would see the day of her receiving an invitation to your wedding.
Michael scoffed, tossing the invitation on the table, the sound of the paper sliding to the other side. Trying to put on a nonchalant act and flashing a fake smile to his brothers who knew him extremely well, the room was still silent.
The men were all scattered around the dining table, completely forgetting they came inside to get some water and heading out, but it seemed like getting home wasn’t a priority.
“I’m sorry, Michael," Tito spoke up. Michael’s smile dropped. “I know how much she meant to you," Tito added.
“But maybe if you didn’t—“ Jackie started to speak.
“I know what I did, Jackie," Michael interrupted him, his voice sounding cold, like he didn’t want to be reminded. “But I thought they wouldn’t go this far."
"Wait... you didn’t think y/n would get married to him?” Marlon asked; Michael glared at him in response. It’s not that he thought you weren't going to marry him; he just thought… you quite literally weren't going to get married to the man.
“You expected her to stay single and follow you around like a lost puppy." Jermaine put his thought into the conversation; Tito rolled his eyes. “I mean, come on, you had no problems being with other women," he continued.
"I mean, come on," Jermaine had no problem running his mouth. "It's been four years since you two broke up, and you're mad because she found someone else?"
"I'm not mad—"
"Well, you can't be hurt about it." Jermaine made the last blow. The two brothers were glaring at each other while the other three were witnessing the mess. Michael was so over what he was hearing and couldn't believe he let himself engage in this conversation.
"I think we should go" Tito suggested. Marlon, Jackie and Randy instantly agreed as they headed to the kitchen for what they needed. Michael couldn't bear to say goodbye so he headed upstairs.
The door before he reached his own was Janet's door; Michael glanced over and had the intention to pass it, but his feet stopped. Turning his body towards the door, something in his body said to knock and ask Janet a bunch of questions.
Shaking his head at the thought that had popped up in his head, he forced his feet to make their way to his bedroom before the urge to bother Janet got strong.
Entering his bedroom, closing the door behind him, his back instantly makes contact. Closing his eyes and letting out the biggest sigh that he can make out of his body, pushing his body weight off the door.
Sitting on the bed as he stares across the room, he can't put his feelings together. Feeling frustrated, Michael puts his hands over his face and lays back as he loudly groans.
Engaged. Wedding. Marriage.
It should've been him, like it was always planned.

"Do you think light blue and white would pair well together?" you questioned Michael as your head was resting on his chest while your hand was comfortably placed on his stomach. "Or maybe like a blush pink?" you added.
The two of you were in Michael's bed; it was 11PM on the clock, and the room was slightly dimmed to almost no lighting in the room. Both of you are under the duvet and blankets in nothing but your underwear, feeling each other's warmth. His hand lingers on your waist before it moves down to your hip.
"No! "What about sage?" You propped your head up, making eye contact with Michael, who can only chuckle and smile at your dedication. "Hm, now I think of it. I do want two cute colors instead of a color and white… so maybe” you continue on as you unconsciously trace shapes and doodles on his stomach with your nail.
Michael was definitely listening, and yet he was in awe of you speaking passionately about your future day that wasn't happening soon, but you two felt in your souls that it would come.
"Ooh, sage green and gold would be so cute, or champagne and ivory," you ramble on. Michael couldn't stop smiling for the life of him. It was like in that moment he was already visioning you in your wedding dress or watching you down the aisle.
"You know, some input and help would be nice," you said in sarcasm. "Sounds like you got it all figured out," he responded playfully. You rolled your eyes as you softly pushed his chest. "Besides"
Grabbing your waist by both of his hands before pulling you on top of him. Chest to chest, your faces so close that you can feel each other's breath softly on each other's lips as it feels comforting.
"With all the money I made, you can have whatever you want, and it can be whenever you want." He caresses your cheek as your lips curve up into a smile. "No budget for the wedding whatsoever."
Move yourself down a bit so you could now go back to resting your head on his chest as you two enjoy silence for a bit. "I want a spring wedding," you confessed. "I just wish right now was the perfect time to get married," you softly spoke. Michael took a deep breath as he caressed the top of your head.
"Yeah, me too," Michael agreed.
Putting his hands down in defeat, just staring at the ceiling. Reminiscing on the conversation that was happening in the bed that he's lying on, that he sleeps on, and yet it still pains him.
But at the end, it was his doing.
⋆𐙚₊˚⊹♡ 1984.
It was evening; you two were heading back home by Bill, of course, but poor Bill… his ears were definitely on one that night. You and Michael didn't even sit next to each other; you two had both window seats occupied, leaving the middle seat for your purse and heels. That was your way to have a barrier.
"You are a complete idiot." You said while staring out the window, with your arms and your legs crossed and pushed up against the interior door. So close to the door that if somebody opened it, you would definitely fall out of the car.
"You told me that she was some childhood crush."
"Y/n, she is but—"
"It sure didn't look like it when she was all up on you tonight; it's like you put that place like you knew she was going to be there," you interrupted, shaking your head in disbelief. Michael sighed; he started to also shake his head.
All Bill could do was just drive and peep the rearview mirror more frequently to make sure no backseat madness goes on. To be honest, he really didn't see the situation from the beginning, so he's trying to gain knowledge from the back and forth that's going on, and sadly he is still lost.
"It's a popular spot; how would I know she's coming?" he questioned, starting to get defensive. "It's not my fault you're getting jealous," Michael said. You turned your whole body to face his in madness of what he just said. Meanwhile, Bill is slowly pushing the gas pedal to reach home a bit faster, a bit worried of what could possibly go down.
In the meantime, Michael's family was almost done with dinner since they started cooking a bit late. Small conversations with them here and there until the car headlights start reflecting on the window, Randy looks up confused. "I thought they weren't coming home till later," he said.
"Yeah, well." Joseph spoke as he gathered food on his utensil. "Michael knows he got practice in the morning," he finished and then took a bite. Joseph got no response; everyone kept eating. It wasn't long till the argument made it out of the car and made its public announcement to his family and possibly your neighbors.
Once Bill turned off the car, Michael immediately got out of the car and slammed it behind him. Grabbing your heels and clutch, Bill opened your car door and offered his hand. "Thank you, Bill," you thanked him as you exited out of the vehicle. "At least someone is a gentleman!" You shouted.
Michael stormed into the house with you following behind him, holding the door before shutting it. Giving you a glare, "Oh, but if I were Diana, you would open every single door for me!" you teased. Michael's family was so quiet; it was almost like they weren't home at all.
"Can you two shut up?" Joseph shouted, the family members at the table flinching at the sudden noise. Michael ignored his father and headed upstairs. You glanced over at the dining room, where you could see a few of them sitting down, but since you were by the front door, you couldn't see everyone.
"Oh, shut up, Joseph," you shouted back. You usually don't say anything to him, but this was in the heat of the moment, and you know Joseph will always remember this interaction.
Holding the end of your beautiful grey silk dress with one hand with your clutch and heels in the other as you storm upstairs. Rolling your eyes at this whole situation, you just couldn't believe it.
Making your way to his bedroom, slamming the door behind you and tossing your clutch and heels on his bed before taking a seat on the edge. Your eyes were glued to your feet, the color of nail polish that you picked for your pedicure before it shifted to the hardwood floor. Michael is taking off his tie, giving you glances. "There's nothing going on," he said firmly.
You sighed, lifting up your head to meet his eyes. You could tell the situation was putting off the whole mood, but it felt like he was guilty of something.
You've avoided asking this question ever since you found something in his possession recently. You thought to yourself that you could possibly be overthinking, but after tonight's event… this is the perfect moment.
"I'm going to ask you one thing," you said, "and I want the truth." There's nothing but seriousness in your tone. Michael nodded his head.
"Why are you two exchanging letters, and why did it start after the Grammys?"
Michael stares at you, his mouth trying to provide an answer, but it closes as he's trying to find words. You watched him fumble, seeing him trying to say an answer in real time. If your anger wasn't already high, him not answering definitely did it for you.
The silence was slowly killing you and was finally getting to you; your eyes swelled up with tears. Taking a deep breath before shaking your head. "You are so pathetic." You almost choked, a few tears running down your cheeks, quickly wiping them away with your hand as your foundation transfers, leaving a part of your makeup smeared on your cheek.
"Is this how you feel?" you questioned. All Michael could do was just stand there, no word uttered from his mouth.
The truth is he doesn't know what he wants; everything happened so suddenly. While Diana is his childhood crush, it was flattering to receive the attention from her; he basically got too excited about the whole situation.
Despite saving himself for marriage, he was led by lust.
"Did the past three and a half years mean nothing to you?" You stood up, placing your hand on your chest as you felt your heartbeat going up every minute. "I did my best for you," raising your voice as it slightly cracks.
Michael's eyes moved slightly down to see your finger pointed at him before his glance bounced back to your teary eyes. Shaking his head, "No, it means everything to me," he protested, taking a step closer.
"Clearly not; I have been there for you every time."
Michael made his way towards you, attempting to grab your hands to soothe you, but you pulled away from him. "No," you say as tears are flowing down your cheeks, wiping them away with your hands again as now your mascara is smudged and your concealer and foundation are almost nonexistent on your face. "You can't do this to me." Your voice got raspy.
"Michael, I-I just can't do this anymore."
The next morning, the invitation was burned into his brain. Sitting in his room with the phone right next to him on the bed, thinking long and hard about if he should make this decision.
Michael had nobody to talk him out of this, simply because he didn't tell anybody. He was already debating if he even should call, but it has been years since he has seen you or really talked to you. Sure, you're still friends with Janet, but she respected your wishes and doesn't tell Michael your business, and you simply avoid the house because of him.
Dialing the number that he knows by heart. Michael prayed that this was still your number; otherwise, it was a lost cause. Staring at your number displayed on the screen with his finger hovering the call button.
The courage was built, and the call had started, putting the phone up to his ear as he listened to the phone just ring and ring. "Okay, maybe this was a bad idea from the start," Michael had thought to himself. It felt like the call was ringing forever, so he pulled the phone away from his ear.
"Hello?" you answered. Michael froze as he heard your voice, thinking you were going to let the phone ring.
Rushing to put the phone to his ear again, Michael inhaled as he rubbed his hand on his pants and then exhaled in an attempt to breathe out the bad nerves.
"Y/n" You heard Michael's voice on the other line, and you were taken aback. It's been four years, so why is he suddenly calling? Not knowing that the invitation that was sent to Janet had already arrived at the Hayvenhurst house.
"Can I help you?" you slowly questioned as you were deeply confused on why he was on your line. "Is everything okay?" your voice softened.
"Don't marry him," Michael blurted out, his grip tightening on his phone. Okay—he wasn't supposed to say that right away, cursing himself in the head as he went off script.
Your eyes widen at that sentence, but you try to make it subtle since your fiancé is in the same room as you. He glances over at you as you give him a quick smile before mouthing 'one second' and getting up to go to the next room. At least you know that Janet got the wedding invitation.
"Michael—why are—is this why you're calling me?" you stumble over your words, whispering so your fiancé isn't aware of what is happening. You couldn't believe what was happening; it felt like a fever dream. None of this made sense.
"Please," you could hear a slight whine in Michael's voice, "just don't marry him."
"It's been four years, and you didn't want me back any other time… but now I'm about to get married, and you want to come back?" You couldn't put the puzzle pieces together. Last time you were confused with Michael was the night you broke things off with him.
"No!" Michael replied quickly. "It's not like that, Y/n; I just need to talk to you, please."
"I don't think we need to talk; I feel like everything was said when we last talked," you stated, your nail making contact with your teeth, a habit you make when you're anxious. Looking back behind you to make sure your fiancé wasn't near as you were having this conversation.
"What do I have to do?"
"You don't have to do anything, Michael—"
"Y/n, I want to see you."
"That won't be possible," you sighed. "Just please, I'm getting married in a few months," you confessed. "Good luck when your album comes out; I'm sure it's good." A corner of your lip curved up. You couldn't and still can't stand Michael, but you always admit that he has talent.
"Can I please have just five minutes?" Michael pleaded. You closed your eyes before taking a deep breath. " I have so much to say to you."
"I'm sure you do, but put it in your journal," you assured him. "Goodbye, Michael," you whispered before hanging up.
Michael put the phone down; that went somewhat better than he thought. You were almost too calm, but he's not complaining.
Once you hung up, you immediately put the phone to your chest as you felt like the weight was being lifted off your shoulders slowly like you still had luggage to carry. "Is everything alright?" your fiancé snapped you back into reality for a second, turning around and flashing a smile as you walked up towards him.
"Everything is fine," you answered, wrapping your arms around his neck while his is wrapping around your waist. "It's just work," you shrugged your shoulders before leaning in for a kiss, pulling away and placing your head on his chest.
