the only other named togruta characters in screen media are shaak ti, ashla, governor gupat roshti, and carshotta (bg character that was in the circus the younglings joined in that one tcw ep). i'm going to be ignoring any EU/legends characters because i'm trying to figure out what filoni + lucas + the show/movie writers were intending with togruta/shili culture.
as you may know, ahsoka is named for ashoka, an emperor of india's mauryan empire. however, i can't round down what tano could mean or refer to, other than it might be another red five joke (fives, sabine is spectre 5, torra/blue ace is technically ace five, etc.) since it apparently means "five" in swahili?
we all know ashla was lucas's name for the light side of the force, but i'm pretty sure ashla and bogan are just random bullshit alien/magic names with no real world references.
(did you know that ahsoka's original name, ashla chutu, refers to a regional dynasty in south india?)
shaak ti, pav-ti, and nak-il follow a similar naming convention and are all named after hindu gods (shakti -> shaak ti, parvati -> pav-ti, nikhil + akhil -> nak-il)
roshti's name doesn't reference a hindu god from what i can tell. instead, he's likely a reference to famous indian writer salman rushdie; gupat is derived from gupta, an actual indian surname and another historical indian empire â it should be noted that the name of gupat was given to roshti in EU side material and not within tcw itself
gantika's name is harder to round out, either i think her name is most likely a reference to gandhi while adding in the -ka so that ahsoka's name isn't unusual, though i suspect that she instead may be named for another hindu god, ganesha
i haven't the slightest idea of idea what carshotta's name could be referring to, her name does sound like something, but being an insignificant background character with no direct ties to shili culture, i'm electing to ignore any in-universe and irl cultural meanings behind her name for now. also keep in mind that as a circus performer, she may be going by a stage name.
i think for characters like shaak ti, governor roshti, and ahsoka's parents, it should be assumed that their names have different ways of transliterating/romanizing them from shili/togruta language to english/basic (probably my best immediate and well-known examples is how the arabic name Ů
ŮŘŮŮ
ŮŮŘŻ can be romanized into english as mohamed, mohammed, muhammad, and so on, or how hawaii can be spelled as hawai'i, or how the pokemon ho-oh's name comes from a japanese creature whose name can be romanized as houou, ho-oh, houhou, hĹĹâŚ)
like maybe shaak ti's name was originally spelled as, could have been spelled as, or is an alternative spelling of shaakti, shakti, shaak-ti, or shak-ti⌠which would actually explain why people always call her by her full name of shaak ti and never just shaak or "general ti" or "master ti"⌠because she only has one name, like dooku. so following suit, that means pav-ti's name could be spelled as pavti or nak-il's name could be spelled as nakil.
roshti's name of gupat could either be a status name (like an epithet or tribe or something, maybe not unlike what the name tano is for ahsoka) or maybe he's from a togruta subculture (remember, he leads a togruta colony) where they do give first names?
anyways, this is probably the most consistent content we've gotten on cultural sw alien names, so just found it interestingâŚ
