CHICKEN SKEWERS HISS ON GRILLS OF FOOD VENDORS, its scent wafting through the humid summer air. Machines tower over crowds of people and spin at speeds equivalent to a cheetah in a hamster wheel. Amidst the shrieking of children and old k-pop music blasting in the distance, Yeonjun stands before the ticket booth, tapping his foot against the asphalt road.
He swipes through the messages on his phone—messages with you. A simple “im omw! ^^” was the last thing you had sent. 6 minutes ago.
.. Stop. He pauses after staring at the text for at least another 5 minutes. She’ll be here soon. Stop being so impatient.
Almost a week ago, Yeonjun had asked you out on a date—courtesy of a few friends who were exhausted by his constant unrequited pining. In Beomgyu’s words, he had been “yearning like a Victorian wife waiting for her husband’s return from war” since the day you caught his eye. He didn’t think the clown could be any more dramatic.
Yeonjun exhales under his breath and clicks onto his Notes app, where he had desperately drafted up a schedule—the perfect schedule to ensure you wouldn’t wake up the next day thinking it was the worst date you had ever experienced.
Okay, let’s see..
His eyes skim through the plan, finalized after several drafts and 3am crashouts.
PLAN TO MAKE THE HUZZ SWOON HAVE FUN
1pm-4pm: go on rides (may take more or less time based on lines)
4pm-5pm: eat (snack or early dinner? buy the food for her, you broke ass)
5pm-7pm: play games in game stalls (**MAKE SURE YOU WIN SOMETHING FOR HER!!!)
7pm-8pm: go on the ferris wheel and watch the fireworks together..
“Okay… okay. I got this,” Yeonjun mutters to himself. Just as the ordinarily confident man straightens his back to pull his now jittery self together, a gentle tap tickles his shoulder. He flinches similarly to how a cat raises the hairs on its back when frightened, before a familiar figure steps into his peripheral.
“Hey, Yeonjun,” you greet from his side. “Have you been waiting long?”
Holy shit. If he wasn’t a respectful, mature man, Yeonjun might have already smashed your lips together. Your hair falls into place as you tilt your head forward to see his face. The sunlight glows against your skin, a small smile graced on your pink lips. God, his head spins and he can’t tell if it’s because of the sweltering heat of the summer or you—wait, he should stop staring.
Yeonjun drags his composure back together and ties it up into a ribbon, clearing his throat and pretending he hadn’t been gawking at you like a man seeing a woman’s ankles in the 1800s.
“No, I only got here a few minutes ago too,” he answers smoothly with a boyish grin, though he had really been waiting at the same spot for at least 30 minutes, eager for your arrival.
You exhale lightly. “That’s good. Then what are we waiting for? Let’s go in!”
The two of you stand in the ticket line for what felt like hours, closer in proximity than Yeonjun could’ve handled. The blazing sun had practically been melting his body since he stepped outside; your presence only made the heat burn fiercer, the poor boy was sweating from both the humidity and his masked nerves. Thankfully, as if the gods had heard his prayers for help, you had a portable fan on your person. Hopefully, he doesn’t look like a sweaty mess right now..
“What are we doing first?” You ask aloud, strolling around the carnival. Your eyes briefly trail over the activities spread out in the area. Yeonjun tilts his head towards you, mind flashing to the notes on his phone.
“D—do you want to go on some of the rides here—? Unless you’re not— comfortable with them..” he suggests hesitantly. The nod of your head releases a relieved breath out of him.
”Sure! Which one?” You stop in your place to examine the rides, ranging from tiny ones for toddlers to ones that drop from hundreds of feet in the air, and Yeonjun follows your lead. “Damn, some of these look pretty scary..”
“You can choose, I’m pretty good with most rides,” Yeonjun answers without much thought. You throw a particular look over your shoulder, a glint in your eyes.
”Oh? Showing off, are we?”
The boy beside you jumps at the comment, eyes widening.
“Wait, what? No— that’s not what I—” he sputters, his shield of confidence crumbling down with the gentlest poking of your words. When you laugh, both soft and full of warmth, his shoulders soften.
“I was just messing with you, sorry,” you say, though you smile unapologetically. Yeonjun exhales, shaking his head playfully.
“How rude of you,” he grumbles with faux annoyance. How could he not forgive you? Even while making fun of him, you looked like an angel.
The pointing of your finger snaps Yeonjun out of his thoughts; you were motioning to a spinning ride—one with small boat-like seats. “Let’s start with something more mild.”
“Isn’t that too.. small for us?” Yeonjun’s eyebrows raise in confusion. Nonetheless, he begins to make his way towards the ride of your choice, and you trail closely behind.
“Are you questioning my choice in rides?” A lighthearted huff escapes your lips.
“Nevermind, forget I said anything. The Octopus ride it is, as per Her Highness’ request.” Yeonjun retracts his statement as quickly as he introduced it, replying with a twinge of teasing. The sound of your amused hum flows with the breeze.
“How kind.” You giggle at the banter.
Yeonjun soon rolls to a stop at the end of the line with you. He takes a good look at the people ahead, filled with children and adults alike. It’s when he assesses the distance between himself and the distant ride that he realizes just how long the wait may become. The queue stretches several yards, quite the exaggeration for a simple, local carnival ride.
By the time you and Yeonjun reach the entrance, an hour had flown right past. Though it may not have been wasted from the idle chatter and small talk he exchanged with you, the wait certainly shouldn’t have been half as long.
The most curious part was how this ride was not the only one—the majority of the attraction lines in the carnival were somehow jam-packed with people. Each one had at least a half an hour wait, and that was only the minimum. It was ridiculous how flooded the area was in an instant.
After going on the pitiful number of four rides, you and Yeonjun stand in between the food and game stalls. The color drains from Yeonjun’s face when he lights up his phone, glancing at the time. The clock hit 5:53pm seconds ago. He frantically checks his carefully curated schedule while praying you don’t catch a glimpse of his phone.
He’s terribly behind schedule.
Forget the eating plans, the rides completely messed up his plans and drove straight into the time frame meant for hanging out in the game stalls.
Yeonjun curses under his breath.
What is he supposed to do now? Forget everything and continue according to schedule by going for the games? Or just cram all the activities and hope they have enough time to watch the fireworks properly?
Your eyes land on his phone while his mind jumbles up internally, unable to make out the letters on the screen. “What’s that?”
Shit.
“Oh— this— i- it’s nothing much!” Yeonjun waves off your comment with a sheepish smile. “I was just.. checking the time.”
“Okay..” you murmur, though your eyebrows furrow the slightest bit, suspicion stirring up in your guts. Despite the strange feelings, you brush it off when he addresses you.
“Hey, ( Y/N ), are you hungry?”
”Hungry? Hmmh.. a little,” you say. “Why?”
Good enough for me, Yeonjun ponders to himself before deciding to go with the latter of his previous choices: grab a quick bite and try to spend less time in the rest of the activities. “Do you want to maybe get a snack? We’re in the food stall area anyway..”
Your eyes light up. “Why not?”
Once the two of you finish parading back and forth between stalls, you agree that bingsu is the only real option in the summer weather (with a cup of hotteok to share). You choose the classic milk flavor, and Yeonjun goes for honeydew. It takes a hot minute of bickering and insisting and debating, but Yeonjun triumphs with the duty of paying for the both of you.
“How is it?” He asks as you take a bite of the shaved ice. A hum of approval from you is all he needs to feel satisfied.
“Cold,” you reply, the milky dessert melts on your tongue and freezes your nerves; a delayed wince from the cold sensation escapes you, pulling a laugh out of Yeonjun.
The boy quickly checks his phone—a small precaution, and warning for himself. 6:14pm. It’s not horrible, but it leaves less than an hour for you both to finish your treats and enjoy the games. Maybe an hour and half, max.
“What time is—”
You’re interrupted by a shout from behind, calling towards the two of you. Yeonjun’s head perks up at the sudden voice and finds the owner coming from the stall you were waiting at.
“Oh, looks like the hotteok is ready,” he explains to clear away your confusion. “Can you hold my phone for a sec? I’ll go get it.”
You take his device into your free hand, steadying your cup of bingsu with the other as he jogs off to grab your remaining food. Involuntarily, your head drops to the screen in your possession.
Yeonjun had forgotten to lock it. Even worse off, he left his phone open on his notes app.
Oh. Your eyes trail over the mixed up alphabets. Oh.
You immediately click off the phone, screen flickering black and leaving only the reflection of your face—tangled with unnameable feelings. Confusion? Surprise? Touched? A hint of affection?
You weren’t meant to see it, that’s for sure. But there’s a stirring somewhere in your chest, bubbling up and shifting into heat in your cheeks. A grin stretches across your face as you try to hold back a giddy giggle. He planned out the whole day? For me?
Cute.
Hearing soft footsteps in your directions, you bite back your smile and shake away the evidence that you saw his little notes. Instead, you slip his phone into his pocket, stroll around the carnival, and get lost in conversation while enjoying your desserts in peace—
“Oh shi—” Yeonjun gasps, followed by the clattering sound of plastic meeting the ground. Green splatters all over the concrete road. Your jaw goes slack. Silence spans the space between you.
When the brief moment of shock and processing passes, Yeonjun crouches down to pick up the cup and what was remaining inside. His other hand, balancing the hotteok, slips in the process. Are you fucking kidding me.
The honey drips onto your shirt, but gives you a chance to snatch it up with your free hand. A sticky, golden imprint is left in its removal, stained into your blouse.
Yeonjun almost smacks himself and screams in public—almost. This can’t be real— holy shit, there’s no way I just did that.
As soon as he grabs hold of his spilled-over bingsu, Yeonjun leaps up to your side. “Oh my god— crap— I’m so- fuck, I’m so sorry.”
His occupied hands hover around you, uncertain of what actions they were supposed to take. Your eyes lower to the clear-as-day mark in the middle of your white top. You hold out the cup of hotteok towards Yeonjun; he takes it off your hands.
“What? It’s fine, it’s not like you made the stain,” you assure him, shuffling through your purse. A handful of tissues is pulled out, and you use them to remove whatever honey you can. “I can wash it off when I get home.”
The skeptical frown doesn’t leave Yeonjun’s face, though he doesn’t feel as bad about it as before. He tosses his bingsu into the nearest trash can with a sigh.
”You can have the rest of the hotteok if you want. Or share some of my bingsu.” You offer him a pocket-sized hand sanitizer and what remained of your food, seeing his distress. Yeonjun smiles in return as you spritz the disinfectant onto his hands.
“Thanks. I’ll just have the hotteok and— do you just have everything in your purse?”
A surprised laughter erupts out of you. “I was not expecting that. I just like to be prepared.”
“So you were expecting me to be a complete klutz?”
”What?! That’s not what I said,” you stared at him incredulously. He giggles.
“Kidding~ Though— I can’t really blame you after what just happened, can I?”
The clock strikes 6:30pm by the time the two of you finish your “meals” while walking in circles, leading right back to the food selling area. After throwing away your garbage, you and Yeonjun mutually agree to do a couple of rounds in the game stands.
“Are you good at these?” You ask, standing beside him in front of a particular stall. The goal was to bounce ping pong balls and get them into the glass cups lined up in rows at the table.
“I’ve had my fair share.” Yeonjun warms up his shoulders. Way to show off, he berates himself, though he flashes you a confident grin. “Watch, I got this.”
He had not, in fact, “got this.” The boy had earned a whopping, glorious, champion score of 0 out of however many balls he was given. Never had he ever achieved such an embarrassing feat.
“You were saying?” You tease, letting out a small laugh. He sulks.
After you give it go, doing better than your date, but not enough to gain a prize, you move onto the next stall. Yeonjun fails miserably. The next? Again. The one after? Unfortunate. Another? Take your guess.
Funnily enough, Yeonjun normally breezes through small games like these, partly in thanks to his competitive nature.
“This can’t be real,” he groans after another round that results in zero points. “I swear I’m good at these. Something’s up with my luck today.”
Your eyes curve simultaneously to your smile. “I’ll believe you. For now.”
It’s a bit before 7pm the next time Yeonjun checks his phone; there’s still time to spare before the fireworks begin. It looks like we’ll be able to follow the schedule again. Thank god.
“( Y/N ),” he calls out to you. Your head lifts instinctively to the sound of your name. “I’m gonna use the bathroom really quickly.”
“Oh, okay! Take your time.”
Yeonjun gives you a nod before jogging off to a small public restroom building to the side of the carnival.
I thought playing the minigames would’ve taken a lot longer. His mind drifts off as he washes his hands. Depending on how long the ferris wheel line is, we should be good to see the fireworks while we’re up top.
Hah, good job, me. It’ll be so romantic, he thinks, mentally patting himself on the back while making his way back to you. When he lifts his head, Yeonjun realizes you weren’t alone.
“Yeonjun, you’re back.” You notice the boy returning to your side. Your gaze lowers to the small child holding your hand; tears well up in the young girl’s eyes. “I found her while waiting for you, she seems to have gotten lost..”
“Oh…” Yeonjun murmurs.
This is bad… the schedule might end up being pushed back again depending on how long this takes..
“What should we do? Look around for her parents?” You ask, looking around at the crowds of people. Yeonjun kneels in front of the kid in your hold, trying to look as “not-intimidating” as possible.
.. but I can’t just leave a child that needs help.
“Hey there, what’s your name? I’m Yeonjun.”
The little girl gives him a long stare, wiping her tears with one hand, before answering, “… It’s Hyewon.”
”That’s a very pretty name,” Yeonjun says with a comforting smile. He stands back up to face you. “Why don’t we take her to the front so they can make an announcement?”
You nod. “Good thinking. Let’s go, Hyewon-ah~ We’re gonna find your parents, don’t worry.”
Though hesitant, Hyewon follows along with you and Yeonjun, clinging onto your hand the entire walk there. It’s mostly silent, save for the bustling crowds of people enjoying their time and occasional conversations popping up between the two of you.
“Sorry about this,” you chime up all of a sudden. “I know the fireworks are about to start, but I couldn’t just leave her alone.”
“What? No, it’s not a problem at all. This is more important right now.” Yeonjun shakes his head fervently.
Soon enough, you reach the main booth towards the entrance of the carnival. Yeonjun explains the situation to the man sitting at the front desk while you chat with Hyewon, trying to soothe her nerves.
“They’re going to make an announcement for her,” Yeonjun says when he returns to you and Hyewon.
“I’m gonna go try to find the parents.” You motion back to the inside of the carnival. “It should be easy now that the announcement is up.”
A confused expression appears on Yeonjun’s face as you slowly let go of Hyewon’s hand. “What? They should be on their way anyway.”
“I know, but this way, they might get here faster,” you explain, before turning to the small girl in your care. “Hyewon-ah, could you stay with Yeonjun until I bring your parents back?”
Hyewon nods timidly, then you jog off to the main area of the carnival in search of her parents. Yeonjun takes a seat next to Hyewon in the booth.
“I’m sorry..” A whisper comes out of the child’s mouth after a moment of silence between them. “.. for ruining your date with ( Y/N ) unnie.”
Yeonjun’s eyes widen. “Oh, no, it’s okay! You didn’t ruin anything.”
“But you two were talking about missing the fireworks because of me..” The girl sniffles, staring down at her feet.
The… fireworks? Right, we were talking to each other about that.. wait, how did she know I had planned to see the fireworks with her?
“Don’t worry, there’s still time until the fireworks start.” Yeonjun comforts her. “Do you like fireworks, Hyewon-ah?”
Hyewon lifts her head to meet his gaze. She nods. “Mhm, they’re really pretty. Like your girlfriend.”
Yeonjun’s breath is almost knocked away. Damn— kids these days are so blunt..
“I mean— she’s not— really my girlfriend..” Yeonjun swallows down the word “yet” at the back of his throat. “But, fireworks are pretty, aren’t they? Are you excited to see them?”
“Yeah.. !! They’re so colorful and— um, sparkly!” Hyewon smiles a little at the thought.
Good, she seems to be feeling a little more comfortable with me.
Just then, a familiar voice calls out to the pair, along with two others—more mature-sounding. Yeonjun looks up to find the source: you, with who seems to be the parents of Hyewon.
“Hyewon-ah!” “E- eomma! Appa!”
Hyewon leaps out of her seat and sprints towards her mother, who scoops her up into a hug.
“God, you had me and your father so worried, did you know that? Don’t ever go running off again!” The mother lectures her.
You manage to slip around back to Yeonjun’s, who is now standing, side as the two of you watch the heartwarming reunion. The parents quickly turn to bow towards you and Yeonjun.
“Thank you so much for finding her, we’re so sorry for causing so much trouble for you two.”
Yeonjun shakes his head, waving his hands as if to decline their over-appreciation. “No, no, it wasn’t any trouble at all. Hyewon was very well-behaved and a pleasure to talk to.”
“We’re just glad we were able to find you,” you add to his comment with a polite smile. The family soon departs and Hyewon waves goodbye.
“Bye bye, ( Y/N ) unnie and Yeonjun samchon!”
“How come you’re unnie and I’m samchon??” Yeonjun whispers for only you to hear while waving back at the girl. You giggle.
“She must’ve gotten the impression of you being older from whatever conversations you had.”
“Hey!”
With the issue having died down, you and Yeonjun begin to return back to the carnival. Yeonjun checks his phone.
7:27pm… 7:27pm?!?!? The fireworks are going to start— like— now!
“( Y/N ), mind if we ru— n…?” His gaze trails down to your feet, adorned with heels. You tilt your head in question, but he shakes his head. “Nevermind, we can just walk.. Follow me.” And hope the line for the ferris wheel isn’t long. God, why’d I jinx myself? My luck today is horrifying.
You scurry over to his side. “No— I’ll be fine, it’s not that far. Let’s hurry over before the line gets long.”
Yeonjun eyes you, unsure if your decision would really be okay with you, but folds the instant after. The two of you race towards the ferris wheel as fast as your feet would take you, and as if to pay Yeonjun back for the previous mishaps, there was little to no one in line.
…Wait, how’d she know I was trying to bring her to the ferris wheel? The thought crosses his mind as the adrenaline from sprinting began to wear off.
The ride operator ushers you and Yeonjun into the next cart, seated side by side, slamming the door tight before starting the ride again. It rises up into the air, starting its slow revolution. Orange bleeds into midnight blue in the sky as the sun dips to make way for the moonlit night.
“Yeonjun, I actually.. have something to tell you,” you voice with an anxious smile, clearing away the tense silence between you. Yeonjun’s head tilts towards you in confusion.
“When you.. gave me your phone earlier at the food stalls, I accidentally saw what was on it. And.. the.. notes you wrote, for today. Not to say I was bothered—! …But sorry for peeking.” Heat flushes into your cheeks, thankfully masked by the nighttime darkness. Your fingers dig into your seat, trembling just the slightest. “But.. I wanted to thank you for trying to make today special, even if there may have been a few bumps along the way.
“You know how you asked if I had a whole inventory in my purse? I know it was just a joke.. but truthfully, the reason I was so prepared is because I thought I would be the one making a mess of myself..” You let out a small, nervous laugh.
Yeonjun’s breath hitches and eyes widen, the gears in his brain slowly clicking into place with realization. His face burns from understanding. So that’s how she knew about the fireworks… Wait.. that means she saw all my stupid side notes. Holy sh— that’s so embarrassing?!?
“Wait— but you didn’t look nervous at all the whole date..”
“…Maybe I’m just good at hiding it.” Your eyes crinkle with your smile. “I had fun today though, really. Thanks for.. asking me out.”
As the first spark rises into the night sky, you slowly approach Yeonjun, inching closer. Your lips hesitantly peck his cheek and leaves just as fast as it had made contact. A glittery burst of color lights up the darkness, crackling as more fireworks shoot up to paint the sky.
Yeonjun heats up from head to toe, mouth falling agape; he turns his head away from you to face the fireworks and hide his reddening cheeks. Fortunately for him, you avert your gaze towards the dazzling show in the sky, too self conscious of what you had just done to pay attention to the boy.
At least Yeonjun didn’t fumble the main attraction.

At least Yeonjun didn’t fumble the main attraction.

. like and reblog~ ⌗ MASTERLIST
