Sometimes you feel like nothing great ever really works out for you.
You don’t make friends with popular people. You don’t top your class. You don’t even fail spectacularly, just—
Hover in the middle, somewhere. Cursed to a life of averages. Not great, not horrible, just — there. Just fine. Lukewarm.
And then you also sometimes run out of luck because letting you remain average is just not enough damage the universe thinks should be caused to your self-esteem.
“What do you mean you’re out?”
“Uh, the stock got sold out, Miss—”
“I’m so sorry about her, her midterms have turned her into a monster!” Chaeryeong has both her arms wrapped around your waist and is dragging you away from the counter before the offended cashier can get security to kick you out of the convenience store.
“Chaeryeong, they can’t run out—let go of me! I bet they have a stock saved for some hotshot student but they just won’t sell it to a mediocre like me because who runs out of highlighters in the middle of fucking exam season—”
“Jeez, sailor’s mouth, calm down!” This time Chaeryeong shoves you away from her warm and loving embrace, bracing both her arms on her waist to stare you down in that very intimidating way that only Lee Chaeryeong can pull off. “It’s literally 2 AM right now, woman, they’ll probably restock in the morning!”
“It’s not even fully 2 am yet!” you snap at your best friend. “And I will not require a highlighter in the morning because I will be napping in the morning! My exam is at noon, man, I can’t pull an all-nighter like that even on xanax!”
Chaeryeong squints at you and tilts her head. “You’re so fucking weird, dude. Can I trust you to stay here for a minute while I run back in for some cup ramen?”
She absolutely cannot trust you with anything right now, how does she not realize that?
“Please stay here and do not run off to your room without me, okay? I’ve got a quiz to run by you.”
You don’t react because you don’t wanna lie to your best friend, but the moment she steps back into the store and is out of your line of sight – you sprint. You’ve got to sit and write an exam in less than 12 hours! Who does Lee Chaeryeong think she is for making you wait for her?
It takes a lot of huffing and puffing, and a nearly sprained ankle, but you make it back to your building in under ten minutes. That’s some feat!
Unwilling to waste anymore time, you rush up to your dorm and run past two of your floor-mates who are peacefully watching some movie in the common area, until you’re back in the security of your room. The fort of papers and pens that you left abandoned for way too long awaits you with your laptop propped up next to them. You shut the door with a sigh.
Your phone’s been blowing up ever since you left the post outside the convenience store, but you do not have time to deal with an angry Lee Chaeryeong right now. You’ve got to cram like a cramming machine especially because you had no time to make flashcards for yourself and now that you’re out of highlighters, too, you have to blind yourself by dipping your nose into this Econ book which is nearly as thick as your thighs.
Okay, maybe that was an exaggeration.
Sighing again, you blindly move your hand towards the light switch in the room – only for a hand to wrap around your wrist.
Wha—
Heart stopping and brain freezing in bone-chilling fear, you unhinge your jaw to let out a scream. But not even a whole second later, a palm is placed over your parted lips and a body pushes you to the wall next to the light switch with an urgent hush whispered in your ear.
“Please don’t scream, I’m not gonna harm you, I just need your help!”
The stranger sounds and feels like a male.
What the hell is a strange man doing in your very all-girls dorm?
You wanna scream louder, something that this stranger senses because he suddenly presses his body tighter against you, this time dipping his face into the crook of your neck, lips against the shell of your ear when he shushes you.
Okay, now why did that cover your entire body with goosebumps? Of the good kind?
“I’m not a creep I swear, I was just escaping an embarrassing situation and this room was unlocked so I slipped in, please let me explain!”
You try to calm yourself down, taking a deep breath which immediately lets you know that this not a creep actually smells really heavenly. You kinda wanna sniff him again, but catch yourself at the last moment.
Leaning your head farther away to press it against the wall, you narrow your eyes at the short-haired silhouette of the guy that is lit up at the edges due to the light entering the room from the window directly behind him. The hand which held your wrist moves, then, and flicks the light switch.
You immediately squeeze your eyes shut due to the blast of photons across the room, and the stranger slowly steps away from you, very tenderly letting go of your mouth – which had honestly started to hurt a little – at the end. Massaging the side of your jaw, you slowly open one of your lids, and then the other.
Then you blink. And blink again. And nearly have an aneurysm because damn does the campus It-Boy look even hotter up close.
Choi Yeonjun stands before you in his pale orange hair glory, wearing a fitted off-sleeves, off-white sweater. And, shit, are those pearls around his neck? Yes. Yes, they are.
While you’re still hovering in the limbo between shock and awe, the guy launches into a rushed and stuttered explanation.
“Th–thanks for not screaming. I’m… Ugh, I don’t even know where to begin, but like – I – I was trying to surprise my girlfriend who lives in this very dorm, a floor above—you know, where all popular seniors live—and, um, just as I reached her door I heard sounds…of the sexual nature…echoing inside, so – so I investigated and guess what? My girlfriend is fucking my best friend behind my back!”
Your jaw drops open. “I… what the hell, man?” you whisper, stunned and disgusted. “That’s so awful…”
“Right? And embarrassing.” He shakes his head. Then his eyebrows suddenly fly up. “Oh! I am Choi—”
“Yeonjun, the uni’s ace Senior. I know. Everyone does.”
A faint blush rises up his cheeks, lips pursing as he shrugs one bare shoulder. Okay, damn, his biceps have some good definition. “Yeah… well. So you know how I was—or still am, I guess—in a relationship with—”
“Kim Yena? Know that too, unfortunately, all my friends in all the srats are obsessed with y’all.” You give a small sigh. “Her cheating on you is such a pity.”
“God, I know right? This is gonna be so horrible,” he murmurs, almost to himself, and bites down on his lip.
You snap your fingers in front of his face. “Um, excuse me? Is that all? I’m sorry for you, man, truly, but um, can you leave now? You’re really wasting my very precious time, here.”
He really is. The only reason why you didn’t flip out yet was because—as embarrassing as it—you were distracted by the guy’s astonishingly good looks. But his beauty isn’t gonna help you pass tomorrow’s exam.
Suddenly regretting wasting the ten minutes that you had saved by ditching Chaeryeong at the convenience store, you clap your hands together and reach for your door. “Great talk! Or not? I guess? See you around, Choi Yeonjun!”
His eyes grow very wide at that and both hands come up to stop you from unlocking your door, before you have even made the move to fully turn around, and—
Oh.
Now you’re caged between the door and both his arms. The same arms with all that muscular definition you just saw up close.
“Please don’t kick me out. Let me stay here. Please.”
This time it is your eyes that bulge out. “The hell? Why?”
He retracts his hands to brace one of them on his waist and pinch the bridge of his nose with the forefinger and thumb of the other. “I can’t leave…”
You lean away from him. “Dude, if you’re looking for a shoulder to cry on? You’ve come to the absolutely worst person. And if you’re looking for a rebound hook-up… well, could you wait till I’m done with tomorrow’s exam?”
Yeonjun’s face goes from confused to intrigued to humorous. “None of those, actually, but – I’ll keep your offer in mind.”
His wink shoots sparks through you and you immediately purse your lips. “It wasn’t an—okay, then what do you want? My Econ exam is tomorrow and I stand to lose all my credits if I flunk this, so please—”
“Wait, Econ?” He spins on his heels to peek at your textbook and the slides you had pulled up on your laptop, leaving you gaping behind him. “Ooh, Consumer Behavior? This is a good one. D’you have flash cards? Don’t skip decision roles, Professor Jeon is obsessed with ’em.”
You look at the guy with wide eyes. “Uh—what?”
Looking at you over his shoulder, Yeonjun flashes you a grin. “You’re talking to a 99 scorer in Consumer Behavior.”
Okay, wow. So the rumors about him being a true ace in all disciplines aren’t just rumors. “I, uh, didn’t have the time to make flashcards for this…”
His eyebrows jump up high. “Dude – rookie mistake. Never ever skip Econ flashcards.”
You know that which is why you’re pissed. “Yeah, thanks for the reminder. Now that you know why I’m under such pressure, can you please lea—”
“Okay, I have an offer for you.”
Yeonjun stands before you with his hands joined together like a businessman about to buy your kidneys. A jarring sight, given his dress-up. But his determined gaze and the slight smirk on his lips kinda makes up for it.
“Let me stay the night here and I’ll help you prepare for your mid-sem tomorrow?”
What the actual fuck?”
“Hear me out!” He raised both palms up, making you realize you spoke your exclamation out loud. “I’ve got a drive folder with all my notes from the previous years – including CB flashcards. I can share those with you.”
You’re not gonna lie, you actually salivate a little at the thought of those notes. “Wh–why do you need to hide in here so bad? Shouldn’t you, like, drink your weight in whiskey to drown your sorrows or some shit?”
He gives a suffering sigh, looking up at the ceiling. Your gaze scans his sharp jawline and you almost salivate again – this time over how handsome this guy is.
“My relationship with Yena hasn’t exactly been…how do you put it—conventional? We’ve been dating because it suits our social ranks and not really because we’re crazily in love or something. I did have a crush on her at some point but, umm, I kinda grew out of it in a week?”
“That’s so fucking fake,” falls out of you before you can put a filter on your mouth.
Yeonjun nods with a wince. “I know. Which is why I’ve been trying to get out of this relationship… Yena somehow caught wind of it, I guess, and… Fucking one-upped me. My reputation is gonna be in tatters if word gets around that I got cheated on.”
You purse your lips and give him a big nod. “Yep. If the Choi Yeonjun doesn’t get bitches, there’s no scope for the rest of mankind…”
He smirks at that and you realize how you handed him a huge compliment in an attempt to be sarcastic. “So I need to stay the night here so that my frat bros think I am with Yena, like I told them I would be. I’ll come up with a plan to outdo her tomorrow.”
“And you’ll share your notes with me?”
“Yes. Do we have a deal?”
Your lips pucker up in a pout as you think about it. The offer is as tempting as it gets. But is it credible?
“What? Do you want proof?”
It’s as if the man reads your mind. “Would be nice, yeah?”
Settling down on your bed as if he owns it, Yeonjun leans back on one of his palms while looking through his phone with the other. His thighs spread out in front of him, almost as if in invitation for you to sit on them—or between them, dear god—so you quickly rush to settle down at your study table, focusing your gaze as well as your brain on the laptop before you.
“I’m suing you if I flunk tomorrow.”
“You’re more than welcome to, sweetheart.”
You whip your head around to reprimand him for the condescending term of endearment – only to freeze at the goofy grin he is flashing you.
“What? You never gave me your name, babe,” he says as a means of explanation, and this time you feel actual chills climb up your spine at his intonation of the word.
Stuttering only a little, you tell him your name. He tries it out on his tongue, nodding as if in approval. Your cheeks warm up at the action.
“Here.” He turns the screen of his phone towards you, swiping through the various flashcards he promised you. “I’ve got good handwriting, don’t I?”
You bite down on your lower lip because he does. “Yep. And humility to go with it.”
Rolling his eyes, Yeonjun raises one eyebrow. “So? Deal?”
Exhaling through your mouth, you give him a decisive nod. “Deal.”
Chaeryeong’s wide, expectant gaze awaits you as you exit the examination hall, the next day. “Oh my God, where the hell have you been? Ran back to your room and didn't even respond to my texts? Did you get any study done? How was the exam, babe?”
You blink at her series of questions, slowly inhaling as a smile crawls up your face. “I think I fucking killed it, man.”
With a squeal, Chaeryeong jumps in to hug you.
"See, you did so well after all that freaking out! You were worried over nothing, dude!" Chaeryeong grins at you, thumping your shoulder with her fist, and you give her a small smile.
Because little does she know – you were rightfully worried. It's just that your worries had been very well taken care of last night.
Because Yeonjun held his end of the deal really well. Better than you expected, to be honest. Besides providing you with his study material, he also stayed up with you till, like, four o’clock in the morning and worked through the entirety of your course to help you prepare.
"You know what? This calls for a celebratory Netflix marathon and pigging out on Chinese takeout!" Chaeryeong suggests, her eyebrows bouncing excitedly. "Your roommate's still out, right? Let's go to your room!"
Netflix and Chinese takeout sounds like heaven right now, so you smile at Chaeryeong and begin to nod in agreement. Well, until—
Just on cue, your phone pings with a text message.
→ refugee senior i've borrowed a cup of instant ramyeon from your study table hope you don't mind 👉👈
Shit.
Yeonjun is still in your room.
Though he did tell you he needed a plan before he could leave, you'd kinda been hoping he would have slipped out in the wee hours of the morning when the entire campus was asleep. Apparently not.
"Dude, who's texting you?" Chaeryeong clicks her tongue in irritation. "I'm drained and hungry! Let's go!"
Oh no…
Eyes wide and breath slightly short, you quickly shake your head. "No! We – we shouldn't go to my room!"
Your best friend tilts her head in confusion. "What? Why?"
You purse your lips at the question, wracking your brain for a good enough explanation. “I… I just really really need a fat nap, Chae. I'll catch you later, okay?”
With that, you slowly begin to walk backwards, away from the girl, with your fingers waving at her and teeth flashing at her in a grin. Chaeryeong eventually raises her hand to weakly wave goodbye to you, despite the layers of confusion on her face.
And then you sprint.
You find Yeonjun peacefully reclining on your roommate’s bed, munching on one of your cup ramyeons. Pausing in surprise, you raise your eyebrows at the guy.
“You… didn’t order food?”
Yeonjun’s brows lift higher than your own. “And risk getting spotted sneaking out? Of a girl's room? Can you imagine the cheating scandal that would blow up? Yena’s girlies live up and down this entire hallway…”
You grimace at that but have to nod in agreement, because you definitely can imagine the terrible scandal that would blow up. Everything goes viral whenever Choi Yeonjun takes center stage. And you would very much rather stay away from it.
"And you didn't even help brainstorm any ideas about announcing the break-up yet." He slurps at the remaining soup, upturning the tub of ramyeon over his face, and then smacks his lips. "I can't leave without a plan."
“Yeah, well, today’s a Friday. Our weekly inspections are every Saturday.” You frown at his nonchalant shrug. “Hey. You need to be out of here before tomorrow evening, anyhow, Yeonjun!”
“Absolutely.” He nods with a roll of hs. “It’d be suspicious of me to stay that long, anyways. The sooner you help me brainstorm a story, the sooner I’ll leave?”
You give a weary sigh at his words, trying not to look at the way his hair is adorably ruffled and sticking up in all directions. It's sort of jarring, to be honest; Yeonjun is believed to be the epitome of suave and sexy around campus. As per your experience so far, though? He's been an academic genius, a pathetic fool who got cheated on, and a clumsy cutie who's living off cup ramyeon to hide away from bad gossip.
It would be a lie to claim that you aren't at least a little endeared by the guy. You've always admired him as much as the next person at university, sure, but looking at him under this fresh spotlight makes you rethink your opinion of him just being a pretty face on a sexy body.
“Ramyeon on my face?”
You blink at his words, realizing you’d been staring. Then you shake your head. “No, just a bit…on your nose.”
He scrunches his entire face up to wipe the tip of your nose and you bite back a fond smile at the adorable sight.
“So. Any ideas so far?”
You hop onto your bed with a nod, exhaling as you grab a pillow and plop down onto your stomach. “What if you actually tell everyone you’re the one that cheated?”
Yeonjun stares at you, jaw dropped a little bit. You stare back, hopeful, batting your lashes in invitation of a challenge.
Finally, he rolls his eyes. “No.”
You blink. He should at least ask why. “At least hear me out—”
“I am not gonna say I cheated, dude!”
“Well, you want to save your reputation—”
“It would actually be horrendous for my brand!”
Your mouth shuts with a snap, head tilting in confusion. “What brand?”
He looks at you with wide, incredulous eyes. “This!” he exclaims, framing both hands next to his, well, face. “My face! I have a very trustworthy face, don’t you see it?” He gestures vaguely around it, as if presenting evidence in court. “People look at me and think, ‘Wow, that man would never cheat.’”
You snort. “People look at you and think, ‘Wow, that man probably has seven girlfriends.’”
“Okay, first of all—rude.”
“But accurate!”
He rolls his eyes and falls backward onto the bed, sprawling dramatically across the mattress. His hair flops over his forehead, and for some incredibly irritating reason, the sight makes him look younger. Softer.
You hate that you are beginning to notice these things.
“Besides,” he mumbles, staring up at the ceiling, “if I say I cheated, Yena's is gonna come after me.”
“Wouldn't she be less mad if she actually cheated first?” You ask in genuine curiosity.
“That is not how women work.”
You narrow your eyes, pointedly clearing your throat. He raises one eyebrow to look at you—then immediately sits up with both his eyes wide.
“I mean—some women. Not implying you’d do the same. Obviously. You're kinda scary.”
“Although you barely even know me,” you mumble with a roll of your eyes, “but good save.”
“Thank you.”
You fold your arms over your chest, humming as you think. “Okay. Not that, then. So why not tell everyone you broke up amicably?”
Yeonjun's eyebrows rise. “Elaborate.”
“You begin like it’s some tragic news you’re sharing with the community.” You squint into space, envisioning the whole thing. “Begin by saying the best things about Yena. How precious she is, how happy being with her has made you, how lucky her eventual partner would be… Then launch into your sob story—I thought we were soulmates, destined to be, or something. You with me?”
Yeonjun nods, mouth open and eyes widened as he hangs onto every word. “With every syllable—go on.”
“Then you mention how romance cannot dictate life because you’re still in college, you’ve got to build your careers—y’know, you’ve got to think about practical things, beyond just your love story.” You rub your hands together, smiling victoriously. “And so you both have eventually realised that you actually want different things—and this relationship just doesn’t fit in. Also mention that you feel like shit, the worst person on earth because you’re letting go of a gem, but because it’s what Yena wants, too…it shall be done. But you're still gonna be friends, because, well, you love each other and stuff.”
Yeonjun blinks very slowly and the way his eyes glisten makes you fear that he might be about to cry. But then he brings his hands together and begins to clap. “Beautiful. Soul-touching. Tell me, are you majoring in Econ or freaking literature, because I fucking bought that.”
You laugh, shaking your head. “Yeah, well, you just need to sell it well to others and you’re all set.”
Yeonjun grins at you. “You're such a genius.”
“I know.”
“So! As a treat, let me buy you lunch?”
You actually laugh at that. “Yeah, yeah, I know you need me to order and receive some real food because you’ve eaten basically nothing in twelve hours.”
Yeonjun groans in pain, dropping all pretense as he admits to his reality, and you dissolve into laughter at his dramatics.
You do end up ordering pizza, however, which he pays for.
It’s late in the evening when you’re awoken from your pizza induced coma. Blinking away bleary tiredness, you turn your head to the side to find Yeonjun squinting at you in the dark.
“Wha—were you watching me sleep? That’s creepy as fuck, dude—”
“What? No! Are you crazy?” He jumps back with an affronted expression. “I was trying to wake you up! It’s, like, nine o’clock, you’ve been asleep for five hours!”
You roll your eyes and sit up, yawning as you stretch your arms above your head. “Who are you, my mom?”
“I—hey! Do you normally stay holed up in your room all fucking day? You need a social life, sweetheart.”
You just stare at him because the nerve of him to be judging your social life when he's the reason why you couldn't hang out with your best friend, today.
“Okay, okay, please don't.”
“Don't what?”
“You were planning to report me to your TA, weren't you?”
As if you'd risk expulsion! “Literally what?”
“You had that face…”
“Yeonjun. You don't know me. You don't know my faces!”
He rolls his eyes and places his elbow onto the top-most rung of the ladder to your bunk. “I've been with you for more than twelve hours now and you've made that particular face roughly two dozen times. I think I kinda know it by now, honey.”
You really, really despise the way he uses pet names with you. They turn your inside all melty and make you want to do out of character things — become a risk taker without seconds thoughts. Because if you were willing to take a little more risk, you could have, perhaps, turned this once in a lifetime opportunity of having the Choi Yeonjun in your dorm room into a hot, sweaty and physically rewarding situation. You could have wooed him, seduced him, or even blackmailed him – but you definitely would have somehow gotten him to water your as dry as Sahara desert sex life.
But, you conclude as you shake your head with a sigh, you're too boring to be daring enough to execute that. Besides, you believe you are also smart as you conclude that nothing good can really come out of getting mixed up with the campus It-Boy.
Although, secretly, you do wonder how exciting your life could suddenly become. You would get to admire his face—and his body—up close and you would get to do it on the regular, in fact. You would go to parties. You would have sex.
But — would Yeonjun even be interested? Despite the nicknames, you doubt he has actually even looked at you like that.
It kinda serves you right. You entered this college as a wuss who couldn’t even hold extended eye-contact in the face of the kind of aura and sex appeal this guy generally exudes. You’re not that girl anymore, but you’ve still got a long way to go before you can become someone Choi Yeonjun would look at twice.
It doesn’t really bother you, per se, but — the mere prospect of maybe getting to ride the rollercoaster of popularity and debauchery with Yeonjun makes your heart beat in excitement.
“Well, then,” you say, rolling your eyes in response, “maybe you shouldn't try to test me.”
“Fine. But I'm bored. When will it be safe to sneak out?”
“No sooner than early morning. At least four o'clock.” You haughtily sit up in bed, crossing your arms and looking down your nose at his pouting lips. Pink and pretty and tempting—you blink and clear your throat. “In the meanwhile, go watch a movie, or write your script for your break-up announcement. Or, I don’t know, meditate? Quit bothering me.”
Yeonjun is pouting more when you look at him again.
“What now?”
“I need a shower. Sneak me out to the bathrooms, please?”
Your eyes widen in shock. “Absolutely not.”
“I've been wearing this sweater for so many hours—”
“And you can wear it for a few more!”
“I smell like ramyeon and pizza!”
“You smell fine, Yeonjun!” The words leave your mouth before your brain can catch up.
You groan in regret at the sight of Yeonjun's grin getting wider.
“I meant—you don't smell bad.”
“Mhm.”
“Don't make it weird, you weirdo!” You throw a punch in his general direction which he easily ducks, giggling as he goes.
“I'm not!”
“You're literally making it weird with your face.”
“Hey, my face is gorgeous.”
“Your face is annoying.”
He throws his head back in laughter, turning the said face towards the ceiling —which gives you a front row seat to admire it from the upper bunk.
Because of course his face is gorgeous. Everyone and their mothers know it, across campus. Mayhaps across the damn city, too.
But the beauty doesn't take away from annoyance.
Something that you are finding out from experience as you're sent through the painful ordeal of Yeonjun placing a complicated order of nine different items from a Chinese place and you're tasked to receive judgemental stares from both, the delivery guy and other girls on your floor. He is beyond irritating when he watches a movie on your laptop because he pauses scenes to show you every ten minutes. He basically drives you up the freaking wall — and not in the pleasurable sense of the phrase — when you try to read a book to bide time, trying to fit his head on your pillow to peek and read with you.
Good god. Just what on earth makes him so popular? Why do people like him?
The final nail in the coffin comes in the form of his insistent pestering of wanting to shower, that you eventually have to concede because he becomes a kid who wouldn’t listen to no as an answer.
So at two in the morning, you find yourself standing guard in the communal shower room, posted outside the shower stall Yeonjun has occupied, like the world's most pathetic criminal accomplice.
“This is so stupid,” you whisper to yourself, massaging your head.
Yeonjun pokes his head out from above the bathroom door because he’s too tall for it. “What's stupid?”
“You.”
“Hey, now. That’s hurtful.” He pouts and disappears again.
“You're the one who’s inside the girls’ dorms but I'm the one risking expulsion because you couldn't wait to freaking shower!”
“Hey! These showers would be thankful that someone like me graced them with all my naked glory.”
You roll your eyes, but can’t stop the barrage of deliciously R-rated images of a naked and wet Yeonjun cascading in your mind.
“You’ve no idea how handsome I look right now.”
He is absolutely crazy. Does he want you to have a heart attack? Or is he just that clueless about the impact those kinds of words may have on someone in this situation.
“Yeah right.” You clear your throat in an attempt to clear your mind. “You look like a fugitive, showering in secret in the middle of the night.”
Just then, the scariest thing happens — you hear distant footsteps.
Eyes wide and breathing nearly stopped, you stand up in a rush and rap on the door to Yeonjun’s stall.
He keeps fucking humming to himself, paying no heed to your urgent knocks.
You swallow past a dry throat, palms beginning to sweat as the footsteps near.
This is it.
This is how your life ends.
Not in a tragic accident, not because you flunked your Econ exam, not even because Chaeryeong poisoned you for being a bad friend—but because you got caught hiding a six-foot campus celebrity in an all-girls dorm at two in the morning.
“Yeonjun!” you whisper-yell. “Open this fucking door!”
“What?” comes his muffled question, followed by, thankfully, the sound of the door unlocking—
You bolt.
Dashing inside the space, you shoulder the guy away, ignoring his yelp, and plaster yourself against the door to lock it again. Yeonjun’s face, slightly red from scrubbing, with hair dripping water like a wet dog fills your vision as he tries to stick it between you and the door. Ignoring his wide eyes, you focus on his open mouth — that is definitely about to say something again because his loud ass cannot think before he speaks — and slap your hand against it.
“Shut it for a second,” you aggressively whisper, pointing outside with your other hand, “and listen!”
The footsteps grow louder, now accompanied by some whistling, and then—everything pauses.
“For fuck’s sake,” an unfamiliar female voice grumbles. “Can’t even shower in peace at freaking two? The fuck! Hey!” You both jump back as the door is loudly thumped at. “You gonna be in there long?”
“Uh… Yeah?” you call back. “I — I just got here!”
“You’re in my favourite shower stall!”
You roll your eyes at the insanity of the statement. “I’m sorry, dude! Can’t you use another?”
“Wow… This is such a nightmare…”
You hear sounds of plastic and metal cluttering and clinking, but she doesn’t really enter another cubicle.
“I’m putting dye in my hair! Try to be done by then, ’kay?”
Your eyes widen. She’s putting dye in the common area — which means she’s gonna stay there for a long time.
Which means you and Yeonjun will have to wait it out in the shower.
You slowly remove your hand from his mouth. His eyes have become even wider than before.
“She’s sitting out there?” Yeonjun asks in a whisper, low enough to be drowned by the sound of running water.
“Yeah,” you mumble, biting your nails and trying to come up with an escape plan.
“Okay. Don't panic. But, uh, I’m kinda naked in here…”
You twist on your heels to face the door completely, eyes squeezed shut. “I am absolutely going to panic...” You cover your face with both your palms. “God, this is my last on Earth.”
He starts laughing.
“Stop laughing!”
“I can't!”
“You're unbelievable!”
“Pass me the towel from the hook, at least!”
You look ahead and thankfully he’s got your blue and yellow polka dots towel hanging in front of you. You tug at it and toss it above your shoulder.
Wait.
If he doesn’t have his clothes in here…
You look at the door in abject horror. “Yeonjun. Where did you keep your clothes?”
A short gasp echoes behind you before you feel his step up next to you—your towel tied on his waist. “On the bench you were sitting on…”
Shit.
“But it’s a sweater vest and cargo pants. Can pass off as girl clothing.”
You roll your eyes at his explanation but let it go.
“So, if we’re gonna be in here for a while… wanna…sit?”
You turn to look at him—and immediately regret it.
You'd thought his shoulders looked broad and defined in the sleeveless sweater he wore earlier, but apparently the fabric had been doing you a favour. Without it, there is nothing to soften the sheer width of him — broad shoulders tapering into a thick, solid chest, his pectorals defined without looking overly sculpted, the planes of his torso home to water droplets that dance lazily down to his stomach which narrows into a firm waist. A clear line of abdominal muscle is visible above your blue-and-yellow polka-dot towel which sits crookedly around his waist, held there with one hand while the other pushes wet, auburn and rust-coloured hair away from his eyes.
His arm flexes in that position, making your jaw unhinge at the muscly definition that runs from his elbow to his shoulder. You follow the muscles up to his hand, to the droplets clinging to his hair, his eyebrows, his eyelashes—
His eyes are looking at you. Involuntarily, your gaze falls to his lips that are pulled to a side in a shameless smirk. “Like what you see, darling?”
A shiver runs from the top of your head, to the bottom of your feet at the low, vibrating timbre of his voice. You resolutely shake your head, eyes never leaving him as you watch his face fall. “I’ve seen better.”
You look beyond him at the two little stools he’d brought along, because my feet need elevation when I scrub my legs. Lucky that he’s so fucking high maintenance. You grab one of them and sit, away from the still running shower that is helping drown the sound of your conversation.
“You’re such a liar.” He pulls the other stool and sits close to you.
Unnecessarily close. So close, you’re painfully aware of everything — the warmth of his shoulder, the faint scent of your shampoo that smells different on him, the water droplets still clinging to his neck, and, generally, all the seemingly small but actually catastrophic decisions you’ve made today that have led you here.
Neither of you speaks as you wait on the occupant of the common area to be done.
A minute passes.
Then five.
Then twenty.
Like, you guess. You haven’t been actually counting, or something. That’d be totally weird.
Finally, you let out a low groan of complaint. “How long does dying your hair usually take?”
Yeonjun hums. “Twenty minutes on a good day if you’re an expert like me. And I’ve got short hair.”
“Not that short,” you immediately correct, turning to confirm with your eyes, and—
He is already looking at you, smiling. That stupid, soft, amused smile.
You swallow. “What?”
“Nothing.” His expression doesn’t change.
You roll your eyes. “Quit doing that.”
“I’m not doing anything.”
You keep staring at him, your lips pursed and nerve endings alert at the proximity. “You’re doing something.”
“I’m not, but…” Yeonjun leans, somehow, even closer. Now there’s barely any space between your faces, his chin nearly brushing your shoulder. “I could if you want me to.”
Your breath hitches. “Yeonjun…”
“Hm?” His eyes flick down to your mouth.
Your stomach constricts, fingers shaking even though you have balled them up into fists kept on your knees. Your own gaze falls to his lips — reddened, wet and oh so inviting.
The smile on them disappears. “Can I—”
“Yes!”
Your heart nearly punches its way out of your chest at the speed with which he erases the space between your mouths.
And the first press of his lips against yours is so gentle that it almost hurts. Almost like he's giving you time to change your mind.
You tell him you aren’t going to do that, by bringing one shaky hand up to his face and cupping the side of his jaw.
With a groan rumbling deep in his chest, Yeonjun curls his own gigantic palm behind your neck, tilting your head the way he likes, and deepens the kiss.
Your brain goes completely blank.
Oh, fuck, he’s so good.
You shouldn’t be shocked that he is able to masterfully part your lips with his tongue and tangle it with yours. He’s literally good at everything — academics, sports, being popular. But you absolutely forget to breathe against the soft but devastatingly hot feel of his lips against yours. Whatever breath remained stuck from before, he steals right out of you with the way his tongue explores the cavern of your mouth, curling against your teeth—only to scrape his teeth against your bottom lip when you go lax in his grip.
You’re melting by the time he slows down, fingers traveling to your face to brush against your cheeks. His nose nudges yours. You can feel him smile against your lips.
And then—
“Did you sleep in there? Jeez, I’m taking the last fucking stall!”
You both jump apart, your head smacking against the wall at the sudden banging at the door accompanied by the shout.
“Ow!”
“Shit!”
You hold your breath, listening for footsteps that travel all the way down the rows of shower stalls. You hear a door being pulled open, then shut and locked — and then a shower starting to run.
You exhale in relief, nearly descending to the floor as you shut your eyes. Yeonjun, meanwhile, shuts the shower in your stall off.
“Damn, we wasted so much water…”
Your eyes slowly open to focus on him. He stares at you with cheeks as bright red as his lips.
Damn, his lips. Yours are tingling.
You try to formulate a response but it turns out that your brain has ceased functioning. It just keeps replaying the sensation of Yeonjun’s lips hot on yours, the feel on his tongue exploring your mouth, and—
“I'm going to kill myself,” you whisper, aghast at the state of yourself. “This is so fucking embarrassing…”
Yeonjun giggles at that, opening the door to extract his clothes. “You gonna give me a minute to dress up? Or if you’d like to sit for the complete show, we can—”
“I’m leaving, for fuck’s sake!”
You jump up from the stool — immediately having to lean against the wall to steady yourself because this guy really did a number on you with just one kiss — and rush out of the stall to wait outside.
He locks the door, but you can still hear his chuckles accompanying the rustle of clothes. “What’s so funny?” you ask, lowering your voice enough so it doesn’t reach the last stall.
“You kissed me back!”
You roll your eyes. “Well, of course I did! You’re kinda insanely hot, in case you haven’t noticed?”
He opens the door with his entire teeth on display. “And smart and funny and a total dreamboat?”
You scowl at him, refusing to respond as you twist on your heels and march out of the cursed bathroom. You barely speak after that, silently walking back to your room.
Partially because you don’t wanna draw attention to yourselves by being noisy, but partially also — because you don't know what the hell you're supposed to say after kissing Choi Yeonjun in a shower cubicle.
Hi. Nice knowing you for eighteen hours.
Sorry about making out with you.
Would you like some more cup ramyeon?
So you immediately climb into your bunk upon reaching your room, choosing to lie awake, staring at the ceiling.
The room is dark. Yeonjun is on the bunk below yours. You can hear him breathing.
You close your eyes, planning to take a nap until your alarm goes off at four o’clock, letting you know it is time for Yeonjun to make his escape.
“Are you asleep?” His voice comes quietly from below.
You inhale — then exhale. “No.”
“Me neither.”
You stay silent, but open your eyes.
“About earlier…”
Your heart starts beating faster.
“I don't regret it. Do you?”
You swallow. “Me neither.”
“Good,” he whispers almost to himself.
Silence envelops the two of you again. You close your eyes, phasing in and out of sleep. The clock on your desk tells you only twenty minutes have passed when Yeonjun calls your name again.
“Yeah?”
“I really do owe you for this.”
You smile a little. “The rest of your Econ notes should do the trick.”
He chuckles. “I'll give you all the ones I’ve ever made. Meet me in the cafeteria tomorrow?”
The question gives you a pause. You believe he’s using it as an excuse, but — “Yeonjun. It’s a Google Drive link, not physical notes. Just...mail it to me?”
“Oh… Yeah. Yeah, fine.” He sounds so low, you’re prompted to cheer him up.
“By the way,” you softly say, turning to your side to smile into your pillow. “I’ve never had a day as exciting as today. I’ll always remember it. I’m…I’m kinda glad you slipped into this room, Yeonjun.”
“Oh.” You feel like you hear a smile in your voice. “I’m glad I did, too.”
Your chest squeezes in happiness.
Eventually, when your phone blares at four AM, you realise you haven’t slept a wink.
“Go time?” Yeonjun softly asks from below, and you sit up.
“Yeah.”
Yeonjun gets up slowly, stretching his arms above his head, before bending to stretch his back and legs. Then he straightens and looks at you as he reaches the door. His hair is still slightly damp.
Neither of you says anything for a moment.
Then you inhale to gather all the courage you can muster. “You deserve a lot more than this, Yeonjun,” you whisper to him, referring to the break-up he’s going to announce today. “I hope you're able to find the kind of person who truly sees you for you. You deserve that.”
You don't know why saying it hurts, but the tightness in your chest tells you that a tiny part of you wishes you could be that person.
But you push the thought away.
This is Choi Yeonjun.
And you're just — you.
“Thank you for saying that.” Yeonjun bites down on his lip, smiling. “I'll see you around?”
You give him a small smile back. “Definitely.”
The door closes behind him, soft click echoing in the dark space that is still full of his presence.
You fall back onto your pillow, staring at the ceiling in awe, wondering what will happen now. You mull over the possibilities. The what-ifs. The maybe-s.
Maybe this was just one weird night.
Maybe you'll see him around campus.
Maybe you'll become friends.
Maybe you'll never speak again.
You don't really know. It makes you a little sad knowing that this could potentially only end up as a one-time occurrence in your life, but you find that you're kinda okay with it.
Because for one ridiculous night, you got to know the person behind the campus golden-boy image — and he was very different from what you expected. Funnier. Dorkier. More vulnerable.
And, unfortunately, a very, very good kisser.
“DUDE.”
Something violently shakes your shoulder.
You groan. “Go away.”
“DUDE.”
“I'm sleeping.”
“DUDE!”
You crack one eye open. Chaeryeong is standing next to your bunk with the most horrified expression you've ever seen on her.
“Wha…? Chae? What time is it?”
You were up basically the entire freaking night, and even the morning hours didn’t immediately lull you into sleep, your brain too preoccupied with thoughts of—
“CHOI YEONJUN?”
Your eyes snap to Chaeryeong. What does she know? How? You immediately sit up, heart in your mouth. “What…?”
“When?”
You stare at her, beyond perplexed, but also fighting for your life trying not to faint at the same time. “What when?”
“When the fuck did you get involved with Choi Yeonjun?”
Your brain screeches to a stop—say WHAT now?
Immediately alert, you are nearabout hyperventilating from the bombardment of scenarios in your head. What the hell does she mean ‘involved’? What the hell does she know? Did she see something? Did he tell her something?
How do they even know each other?
Before you can spiral further, Chaeryeong shoves her phone into your face. “Explain this!”
Your eyes struggle to focus at first, still bleary from sleep.
And then you begin to piece it together.
A recording of Choi Yeonjun’s Instagram Live. Ended three minutes ago.
Your heart drops into your stomach as you grab the phone. “Chae…”
“Do you know what he freaking said?” You look up to find Chaeryeong’s eyes sparkling with amused excitement. “He said he broke up with Yena because he has feelings for someone else!”
You blink in surprise. What? That wasn’t in the script you’d prepared! On screen, you can see Yeonjun sitting in the cafeteria. His hair is messy, his face bare, and he looks exhausted. But determined.
“And then do you know what he said?” Chaeryeong continues, snatching the phone from you, and skims through the video to a certain point, where—
Yeonjun says your name.
You gasp out loud. “What the fuck?”
“...hey,” he continues, blushing a little, “if you’re watching this… the kind of person you were talking about last night… the kind you said I deserve? I want you to be that person. If you’ll allow it.”
The floor disappears from beneath you, leaving you suspended mid-air.
Part of you is absolutely gobsmacked, because how the fuck did Yeonjun think that this was going to save his image? But also partly because holy shit, did he really say what you think he said?
Chaeryeong screams. “Girl, what the fuck does that mean? Last night? Did you see him last night? Is that why you didn’t respond to my texts?”
You don't really hear her—you don't really hear anything beyond the sentence looping in your head: I want you to be that person.
You throw the blanket off, jumping from your bunk, straight to the ground.
“What are you doing?” Chaeryeong yells. “Answer me!”
“I have to go…”
“WHERE?”
You don't answer, sprinting out of the room in your tank top and sleeping shorts. Fuzzy indoor slippers on your feet, hair still a bird’s nest — zero dignity.
You make it halfway across the hallway before someone steps directly into your path.
Yena.
Of course.
She looks you up and down, expression twisting. “You.”
You skid to a stop, lifting a hand up to wave at her. “Yena. Hi.”
She folds her arms. “He chose you? You don't deserve him.”
You stare at her, too breathless and impatient to be polite. “And your cheating ass deserves to eat shit, so we better not get into it.”
Her mouth falls open.
You push her to the side and run out of the dorm building—rushing past everything until you reach the cafeteria.
And there he is. Sitting alone at one of the tables, chin resting on a palm as he pouts at his phone.
You stomp your way up to him. “How dare you.”
Yeonjun looks up, eyes immediately widening upon seeing you. You watch his Adam’s apple bob with a gulp. He meekly whispers your name, but you—
You don't say anything.
Instead, you grab the front of his hoodie to pull him towards you, his chair scraping against the floor as he stands.
“Wait—”
And you cut him off with a kiss, right there, in the middle of the damn cafeteria.
He freezes for half a second—
Then his arms wrap around your waist, chuckling into the kiss as he pulls you closer. He doesn’t start it slow this time, going straight for the kill in acceptance of your answer.
When you finally pull away, both of you are breathless. His forehead rests against yours, eyes scanning your attire. “You ran out in your pajamas and kissed me in public. Is this how we save my reputation?”
“You confessed to me on Instagram Live.” You roll your eyes, but you’re laughing. “There was nothing left to save, you idiot.”
“But I think this can actually serve me good. Watch Yena try to get with someone so quickly after the breakup!”
You laugh out loud at his words. “She kinda already has someone remember? Your so-called friend she cheated with?” Yeonjun winces in regret as realization dawns on him, but you laugh harder. “You're such a terrible planner.”
“Well, I’ve got you to help me clean up my messes. Why else do you think I chose you?”
You gasp at his audacity, delivering a smack against his shoulder, but then you both burst into laughter.
You’re pretty sure multiple people around the two of you are taking pictures and videos. So maybe you should prepare yourself for excitement, and nonsense, and never-ending scandals that will be coming your way now.
It’s time to bid goodbye to your boring days of lonesome silence.
You look at Yeonjun, delivering a peck on his nose.
The boy crawled into your room because his life had fallen apart — and somehow managed to turn yours upside down in the best possible way.
