Avery why’d you sit down? You still need to engrave his name on his grave…
Also my first post everrrrr after finally mustering up the courage, seeing how much art there is of these guys online
The setting glow of the sun tints Avery's skin red. Not unlike the billowing grass of this foreign terrain he's currently sitting on.
It's been a long few days for the slime humanoid. What between carrying the stone and tools needed to carve his tribute, and the actual work itself. As his body softly sinks in between the blades of grass, he tilts his head up to gaze at his work.
It was a knight, who was supposed to have a golden helmet but Avery can't bring himself to touch yellow, or gold for that matter right now. He looks at the pickaxe held up high, a tool the knight used to use that he heard from a storyteller in passing. A book on his other hand, a symbol of wisdom and the heart that willingly laid itself down for a stranger and the world.
An eye is being crushed underneath the knight's foot, something Avery doesn't wish to explain right now. And a small grave at the statue's base.
He's no stranger to tending to graves. It's a memory he wishes to forget, a time he wasted being utterly useless and pathetic. That he let himself be under such a stupid trance and lost so much valuable time that he could've probably used to think of a way to-
He stops.
He feels something roll down his cheek.
"You are real. You are special."
A soft breeze blows, like a gentle caress that tussled his hair. He wonders if his touch would've felt like that. Avery wonders how he would've acted if he saw the tribute he made for him.
Would he smile? Would he say thank you? What would he say? What would he do?
And Avery doesn't have an answer.
What he has instead is a knight-shaped hole in his heart and mind. A hole that'll turn into a scar that'll never go away, a scar he'll carry on as he moves forward.
Tears kept rolling down his cheeks. But before they reached the ground, the wind picked them up and blew them away. The red grass rustling like the red cape the knight once wore.
Avery felt a slight sense of comfort at that. As if the world is trying to wipe away his worries. As if saying that the burden of remembering him is not on his shoulders alone. And that it will remember what he has done with him, even if it couldn't speak.
Avery's cries filled the fields he ran across in search of him.
It rang through the usually quiet hills, alongside the quiet rustling of the grass and the whistle of the wind.
Tomorrow, he will engrave the name entrusted to him by the knight. And he will have to move again to build another statue and grave. But tonight, he will sleep underneath the stars, held by the red grass underneath the stone knight's gaze.
And Avery smiles, for he finds this world he protected to be so beautiful.
Reading this made me more emotional than drawing the art!!! Thank you, your writing is peakk!!!
