More Bitter Than Death

There it was, the rattling of the lock. For Chizuru, it meant that no one else would be around to interfere. She could take care of him, get what she needed, and leave in plenty of time to make it back before dawn. With no witnesses, the only trouble she could have would be if he put up a fight—one she would win unless he had religious icons on his person. Her best bet was to strike quickly and avoid looking directly at her victim until after she’d subdued him, just in case.

She would be killing him once he’d done what she needed. There wasn’t much choice as far as that was concerned; her hypnotism wouldn’t hold out forever, and killing the man would be better than risking her eventual discovery. She could drain him over the course of a few days, or she could choose to end things early, but that decision could come later.

Drawing closer to her victim, she felt grimly glad that she’d taken to wearing quiet walking shoes that didn’t click, that she could run and pounce in without trouble. She’d also rid herself of the strongly aromatic perfume she’d once worn, opting for a subtler, far more common scent. This might not be anything near the life she wanted, but she was a survivor, and she’d do anything to stay that way.

She stayed in the shadows, partial invisibility working to her advantage. She couldn’t truly disappear, but where there was darkness, her outline could be obscured enough that she wouldn’t be noticed unless her victim already knew she was there. 

She was close now, so close she could hear his heartbeat filling the space between them. Something niggled at her about his silhouette, but it wasn’t anything she couldn’t clear up in a few minutes afterward.

Steady… silent…

Strike!

“What the hell!?”

For a split second, Toshio thought he was being mugged. 

That would be just his luck, get saddled with the late shift and get mugged on the way out the door. What about him screamed “mug me!” he couldn’t help but wonder. Opportunity, maybe? He’d just been the one to walk out the door at this time of night.

This was all going through his head in the thirty seconds or so before he realized something was very wrong. Normal muggers weren’t this cold, even at this time of year.

No. Not again. It couldn’t be that again. Could it?

Instinct, terrible old instinct kicked in at that exact moment and he lashed out as well as he could considering it was dark and he couldn’t see worth a damn. His elbow hit something solid and blindly he swung his bag around like it could actually do a lick of damage. If it was that again, they could see in the dark. And he was woefully unprepared.
