“Is it really a betrayal if it’s an inanimate object though?” Elijah couldn’t help but ask as he helped himself to an uninvited seat at the cafe table next to the guy. He probably should have asked for an invitation to join him, but what really was the worse that could happen? Besides maybe coming off a bit rude. “Think about it, in order to betray someone there has to be an intention to do it and some sort of like, consciousness, right? And paper doesn’t have that so if anything the paper didn’t mean to hurt you and maybe if it was aware that it harmed you it would apologize. It’s more likely an honest mistake than a betrayal if ya ask me. I mean I know ya didn’t, but I said what I said.” He explained definitively probably sounding like an insane stranger and took a long sip of the iced coffee in his hands.
He was just about to stop scowling when he heard a very sure-of-himself sounding commentary on his own ramblings, and his scowl turned into a surprised expression of -- well, surprise. He looked up, blinked, and cleared his throat. “I suppose consciousness is involved... somewhere. But one might have to be conscious to make a mistake, as well. Even an honest one. I accept this paper’s hypothetical apology, however.” He grinned at the absurdity of the conversation, paper cut all but forgotten in the span of seconds. “What sort of a person considers the consciousness of inanimate objects, anyway? Even hypothetically.”
