Arabic Resources
*All of these resources are free*
Madinah Arabic Course: There are two sets of course:for those who can read Arabic script and those who cannot. In the course for those who cannot yet read Arabic script you will learn the Arabic alphabet, and slowly learn to read. In the other course you will be able to take 80+ Lessons that go over some of the basics for Arabic.
My Languages: Arabic: Audio. This hasaudio for tons of vocab and also goes over parts of speech like nouns, adverbs, pronouns, articles, etc.
Reed College Arabic Resources: Links to tons of resources including media, such as Netflix movies, newspaper and magazine sites, as well as recommendations for verb conjugator sites, and dictionaries.
Arabic Alphabet Song: Learning the alphabet is crucial to learning any language and having it in song definitely helps
Arabic Alphabet Quiz: This quiz will test you on your ability to identify all the letters and match them to their. This quiz is also timed,so go as fast as you can without sacrificing accuracy!
Writing Practice: THis website has tons of worksheets to practice handwriting and has the letters in all their forms. What I did,to save paper, was print out the pages I needed and put the pages in sheet protectors and I use a dry erase marker to trace the letters as I say their name and sound.
Those are all the free resources I use/know of and I hope to update this as time goes on. Enjoy!
Learn the Arabic alphabet, which is used in languages like Arabic, Persian Berber, Kurdish, Pashto, Urdu and Uyghur!
Consider this my first real day of learning Arabic :)
Any reason to learn a different language is good enough, whether you want to learn Japanese to be able to watch anime without subtitles, korean to be able to understand kpop better, italian because your ancestors spoke it, russian just because it looks aesthetic to you, latin because you like history or chinese because you want to get to a prestigious university, they all matter. If something makes you work hard in order to achieve your dream, it’s a good reason.
Langblr 25 challenge!
Most langblrs are here because we’re desperate to learn more, and many of us (especially those who are self-teaching) have limited opportunities to write in their target language and get feedback on it. So this challenge is intended to help fix that a little.
I have collected a list of 25 topics to write about. The topics are picked so that anyone can do them; you can write a few simple sentences, or you can aim to advanced language use. Whichever you use is up to you. I really want to encourage people to write in their target language, and to get feedback from native or advanced speakers of it.
If you have a particular area you would like correction or help on, then just include this as a note at the end of the text.
TIPS - 1. Spread them out a bit. Don’t try to do multiple a day, or even one every day; take your time, and think on the feedback you get. 2. You can do as many or as few of these as you like, just tell us which one you have picked at the top of your text, and then write your stuff. 3. Tag it ‘langblr25’ so that we can find them easily - it makes it easier to help each other mark them.
IMPORTANT - the only way this can work is if people will correct each others, so please, please do try to help other people out and PLEASE be kind in your corrections.
THE TOPICS -
1. A little bit about yourself - name, gender, age, where you live 2. Something about your family 3. An activity you enjoy doing and why 4. An activity you do not like doing and why 5. Describe an outfit you wear often, and why you like it 6. Describe a sport you did in school, include the uniform you wore. 7. Draw a really simple map and then write instructions on how to navigate it (left, right, crossroads, forwards, stop, etc) and include a picture of the map. 8. A book you like and why 9. Write a fake email and pretend you are booking a room in a city in a country where your target language is spoken. 10. Think of a place you like and describe the landscape. 11. Do you have any pets? Describe them. If you don’t, tell us about a pet you would like and why. 12. Tell us about a place you would like to go, and why. 13. Tell us about your house of bedroom or garden (or all three on separate days) 14. Do you enjoy studying? Tell us why or why not. 15. Write about any subject you wish. 16. Tell us about a stuffed toy you have/had. 17. Pick a random flower and describe it. 18. What kind of job do you want, and why? 19. If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money? 20. Talk about a habit you have. 21. Give some advice (on any subject) in your target language. 22. Pick up the book closest to you, and translate the first paragraph (remember to include the name and author for copyright rules) 23. Your ideal sleeping situation - time, light, type of bed, place, sounds, etc 24. Tell us about some food and/or drink you like. 25. Tell us why you are learning this language in the first place.
I understand that lots of people don’t like to give out real personal information, so feel free to make stuff up for those types of questions.
Is there a skill you’ve always wanted to master someday, but kept procrastinating on? A language you started learning – then abandoned? A topic in class you’ve never quite grasped? Or maybe you just want to expand your horizon and try something new? Distract yourself from your usual studies?
This challenge is the perfect opportunity to achieve that! Pick a skill and see how much you can improve and grow in 30 days – or really start working on your to-read list (I know those books have been piling up), your portfolio for that dream job in Illustration you want, or your blog you’ve been meaning to post more original content on.
Self-growth and development are so, so important, which is the main reason why I created this challenge.
The idea of this challenge is that people from all communities come together to gain knowledge, add skills and just have fun with the amazing amount of resources out there. This way, we can all support and motivate each other, whatever field you might be interested in.
Post an introduction with the hashtag #30dol with your goals and expectations for the month (starting June 1st), and what your current level is. (Of course, you can join in later as well, but it’s fun to start a the same time!) In the end, you’ll be able to compare and see how much has changed!
Rules:
choose a topic or field you want to concentrate on
post an introduction to #30dol
define your goals or aspirations
update daily or weekly, we want to hear from you! ♥
post a picture, a sketch, or audio, whatever you deem fitting to show us all your progress for the day/week
Here are some ideas for you:
bullet journaling (read about it here on @emmastudies, here’s an amazing online course on it)
books/reading (if you don’t have a personal to-read list, here is one with the best books of the 20th century, best series with a gay plot/subplot, and books everyone should have read at least once)
coding (here are some sites to learn html, css, data science, python 3, java, etc.: x x x x)
design/illustration ( stickers and illustration, character illustration, Ink Illustration, 45 best adobe illustrator tutorials,
business/freelance/open your own shop (tips on how to open your own sticker shop, digital skills: web analytics and marketing)
languages (apps like lingodeer, duolingo, lingvist, busuu, blogs like @lovelybluepanda. there are also so many pdfs and amazing websites out there depending on your target language!)
online mass education courses (edx, coursera, skillshare, futurelearn where universities and professionals teach you about their subject - be that astronomy, engineering, ancient greek history, artificial intelligence or medicine!)
social media (learn to take iphone photos for your tumblr or instagram, and here’s a great post by @studyquill on how to start and maintain a studyblr!)
photography (travel street photography, find photographers you admire like annie leibovitz or henri cartier bresson and read about their path, or browse youtube channels like negative feedback which specialize on photography)
creative writing (there are tons of workshops online - you could also try to set yourself a piece or word limit similar to nanowrimo)
culinary (check recipe websites, or challenge yourself to try one new recipe a day, or dedicate the month to a specific cuisine)
music (learn music production, andrew huang has also made a video on how to start making music here)
film and filmmaking (karsten runquist’s channel is wonderful for film analysis, learn about cinematography basics here and film history here)
painting (acrylic painting, sketchbook illustration. you could challenge yourself to fill an entire sketchbook/create a piece every day or week, or to improve a specific technique)
Every resource linked is free (if you click on the links you can get Skillshare for free for two months and cancel anytime), so all you need is some free time and lots of motivation!!
I’m very happy to be announcing this to you all, and will be working on my Japanese for this challenge – so excited to see what you all and I will do and how far we can come!
Use #30dol as the general tag, and add your field (your specific subject, or writing, painting, lang(uages), pho(tography), film, book, design) to find people doing something similar! Though honestly one of the things I’m most excited about is the multidisciplinary aspect - we are such a brilliant and colorful community :)
Have fun guys!!
What should you be reading to maximize your language learning?
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of literature we can learn from. Baby books bore you, but you’re not ready for any type of novel, so what’s left?
Here are some tips
For beginner/A1/A2 learners
Watch a YouTube video in your target language, then read the comments
you’ll already have vocabulary from watching the video, most of the comments will probably use that vocab
it’s a short enough text that you won’t get fatigued
the only downside is that sometimes people utilize abbreviations and slang terms, but even these are good to know
Read news headlines and if you find one you understand almost fully, try to read the full article
sometimes the vocabulary used is not common in everyday usage, but it’s a total win for an A1 learner to fully read and mostly understand any text
while vocab is not used everyday, it will give you the ammunition to talk about that particular topic
Watch Netflix in target language with subtitles in the same language
believe it or not, you will learn to read better, especially because you don’t have to understand written description of visuals (usually uses very niche vocab) or emotion
and now you can slow down or speed up
I watched DARK in German before I felt like I could read a book, and I understood 85% of it. This is because I looked up some vocabulary in the first episodes and they continued to use it throughout the show so it really cemented in my head to the point where I don’t even think about it. Now, I had to rewatch some conversations the characters had, but that’s much better for understanding than switching it to English or looking up full phrases and sentences.
For intermediate/B1/B2 learners
read fanfiction
it’s ALWAYS good to read about something you’re interested in so if you like any major movies, books, television, this is the perfect option for you
most people use relatively basic language and you can choose the length
find a comic book or graphic novel
like watching tv, that visual aid really helps with understanding of the plot without all those tricky descriptions
read a book in your target language that you’ve read and loved in your native language
this is by far my favorite way
you don’t have to worry about trying to understanding the bigger picture because you already know what’s happening/what will happen, you really have to discover the meaning of each sentence and then you begin to picture the scene using only your target language
Check out my other post for methods of how to get the most out of reading !

me: *understands one word without subtitles*
me: im practically fluent
maybe it's better to learn a language slowly. maybe we're too obsessed with things happening as quickly as possible. maybe it's more beautiful to dedicate years of your life to a language and have it grow with you as you journey through life rather than "become fluent in one week!". idk just a thought.
We're so obsessed with the destination we forget to enjoy the journey– which is by far the best part.

One of the things that helped me a lot during prep year was to read comic books in French, you don’t have to read necessarily ones catered to children and there are many options for it online. Also the drawings actually help you interfere what they’re talking much easier
This is such a good idea!!! I didn’t even think of it because I don’t personally read comic books but I definitely get why it would be useful! I guess the pictures also mean it’s almost similar to children’s books cause they would have pictures to and it helps to fill in the wider context so you can narrow down the word it could be!!!
