For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums. 

Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years. 

Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo) Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.

This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it. 

When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever. 

Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.

I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.

The fact that @taylorswift was told she could ‘earn’ her masters/albums back one at a time is absolutely disgusting. She earns her masters/albums purely because of the heartbreak and multitudes of hours, emotion, hard work, tears, late nights, and dedication she puts into her craft. She doesn’t earn her albums/masters because of a contract or a man’s discretion. Taylor earns her work because she created it and made something beautiful.

The fact that not one male artist (including ed and shawn and brendon) has said ANYTHING about this is repulsive. Men in the industry have privilege (it’s terrible but its’ the truth) and the fact that they aren’t using their voices to speak up about the injustice that is occurring to not only taylor, but Scooter Braun’s other female clients (i.e. Madison Beer) is revolting. I’m genuinely disappointed in the men who don’t speak out for the women in the industry. I’m even more disappointed in the men who only speak out when a man accomplishes something. (EDIT: HRVY spoke up about the situation, so thank you to him for using his platform. Thank you also to Jack Antonoff as well)

Justin Bieber’s post was absolutely disrespectful and it’s obvious that he didn’t even read the post. It’s also obvious that he was probably told to make a post about the situation. Justin isn’t a child anymore, so can he please stop acting like one. In his post he had said that they shouldn’t take issues to social media, but the irony of it all is that he is taking the issue that doesn’t even involve him, to social media.

The fact that Scooter can now use Taylor’s music/masters any way he wants is disgusting. He did nothing to help T grow, and somehow the men in this industry think it’s okay to take credit for her success and hard work of THIRTEEN YEARS. Scooter is an asshole who deserves nothing of Taylor’s.

Fuck Scott Borchetta. The fact that he can sell taylor’s masters to anyone BUT TAY is fucked. Fuck him for backstabbing someone who has literally been there since day one. She rose him to the top and now he’s deliberately trying to tear her down (Presumably because she left BM). The fact that she didn’t even get an offer to buy her masters is repulsive.

The fact that BM and Scooter have revoked iTunes purchases (specifically of taylor’s music) purely so he can make money off of her past albums is vile. He changed rep from ‘reputation’ to ‘Reputation’ which outright violates taylor’s creative vision for the entire album. Fuck that.

This whole situation shouldn’t have even happened if artists could just own their goddamn work. End of story. This is so fucked that Taylor has to fight to keep her hard work out of the hands of somebody who has outright disrespected her for years. Artists should own their work. Period.

To Taylor:
