some messy thoughts on nolan's odyssey, and when i mean messy i mean MESSY lol, no categorization!
for starters i already had my reservations with how i'm hearing tale of the film being shot on indigenous land and the swedish who crafted the boats not being paid properly and props being thrown into the sea and i'd planned to đ´ââ ď¸ the damn thing until dragged into seeing it in the cinema under... less than ideal circumstances. so yeah.
i'm hard of hearing like maybe it was just me but i genuinely could not make out what anyone was saying half of the time. like.
travis scott as a bard ("a" bard in this instance just because i don't think he's identified as any of the bards in the poem, but i will refer to him as "the" bard onwards) was SO COOL he made the most out of those two scenes he was in with a staff a voice and nothing else. i love that the film opens in ithaca by itself tbh #biased.
it might just be me but i feel like it switched camera angles way too much in quick succession like we get it it was filmed entirely by imax cameras. can you let us go now
you'd think that casting mia goth, an actress i think is pretty great, as melantho as well as adapting her brother melanthius would mean that she gets more than three-ish scenes but. you would be wrong. (holding back tears) lol.
no anticlea no nausicaa no 12 enslaved woman no nothing. actually there was eurycleia, love her!!!
ANNE HATHAWAY AS PENELOPE. REALLY GOOD.
penelope being viewed through a steel(? wooden? whatever) screen so often was really striking and i think that, at least in part, was to replace her veil in the poem

the choice to replace eurymachus with polybus changed literally nothing but i do think it was funny as fuck

i did not like how the slaughter in the halls was adapted. i did not.
i do think the film streamlined the wanderings nicely! merging the lotus eaters (eater, singular, in this case?) with calypso is neat. and i do think it's clear that odysseus is unwilling in his relationship with her without being like, in your face
the body horror in circe's section was really scary and really good and i love how "back to your disguises" is the line she uses when transforming odysseus's crew back into humans. also pasiphae is there. for some reason. to be a crow!
i don't know how to feel about menelaus and helen yet. give me a day

what really got me is that the film has some beautiful shots with the sea and all but it's dampened by how the men sailing in it are dressed in shit from a butt
i think they were going for a chess kind of thing with the achaeans wearing black/dark colours, the trojans wearing white/light colours and the horse raised upright but like, couldn't have they made it interesting through texture?
agamemnon's costume stuck out to me the most amongst the achaeans with that little skull part and lion engravings and it's not even all that.
i really like that we never see his face in full tbh, dead man dead man. didn't really feel like agamemnon when he actually spoke in hades though, can't explain it lol it's just. not my agamemnon!
only characters with decent costuming/a semblance of colour in their clothing were antinous, penelope and clytemnestra. good for them!
even the laestrygones who had nothing to do with the war looked awful so now what lol
telemachus final outift.....not good
i can't remember if tiresias was blindfolded or had big bangs or what but i don't think his eyes were visible one way or another, pretty run-of-the-mills depiction besides the fact half of his body was in the ground/buried as opposed to the other shades standing normally

polyphemus isn't even named in the film. mean to him :(

this movie is so fucking ORANGE and often paired with a ton of darkness i can't see shit in here man. i wanna say it might be intended to mimic red figure pottery but i can't stress this enough lmao i had to squint! at times.
i don't knowww the film feels. disjointed. maybe it's because of the dialogue i didn't like it all that much. i found myself thinking that it's too expository a lot but that's probably because i'm familiar with this song already.
i liked zendaya as athena her outfit was nice actually!

i like how pained menelaus is about agamemnon's death like. yeah it's a pretty obvious choice even when you're depicting menelaus as a really insufferable jerkpot but i like it. helen using that to disturb menelaus as much as she can :)
referencing the collapse of the bronze age was ok i guess. sorry that's not my field of expertise. it was ok
eurylochus's bald spot was really distracting. to me. himesh patel was neat though
i didn't even know polites was in it until i caught a glimpse of the cast credits for one (1) second
