@pale-moon-rising
“What are you doing this weekend?”
“Nothing, just some studying, why?”
@pale-moon-rising
Somehow, for reasons I still haven’t been able to fully comprehend, you’ve forgiven me - for my absence, and for the crack in your heart that it left behind - fitting seemlessly back into my life as if the last few months never happened.
It’s been nice. More than nice, actually. Having you around gives me back the shred of normalcy that I never thought I’d have again.
Still, there’s something different about you now, a hardened shell you’ve built around yourself, no doubt because of how much I’d hurt you. It has aged you - not in a bad way though. It’s aged you in a sense of how you carry yourself. Your shoulders held a little straighter, your chin tipped a little higher, and your tolerance for my bullshit at an all-time low.
I chuckle quietly to myself while I watch you from the kitchen. You’re curled up on the breakfast nook with a steaming mug of tea while you read silently to yourself. My sweatshirt practically dwarfs your small frame, swallows you up almost past your thighs which are bare like the rest of your legs down to your feet. With a shake of my head I pad towards you and ruffle your hair.
“I’ve got to open the shop soon,” I murmur, pressing a chaste kiss to your temple. “I have another stop to make before I close up tonight, GPD needs me to look at some crime scene photos. They think dark magic was involved.”
I’ve been doing my best to be more transparent about the things that I do for work, but it’s a dangerously fine line that I’m terrified to cross. What I do can get people hurt, and if anything happened to you because of me…well, it’s not something I think I could recover from.
When I feel your presence beside me, I straighten my spine and take the steaming cup of coffee gratefully from you. My mind is usually a torrent of thought, and oftentimes my own selfcare gets overshadowed because of that. Your question, however, makes me hesitate for a moment.
While I’ve been more open with you about things, the more you know the more dangerous they can get for you. Still, I promised things would be different around here and I meant it.
“There’s been six bodies found in the last two days all exsanguinated with no sign of any wounds that could have been used to drain them. That’s where I come in.” I give you an overenthusiastic but clearly fake smile before rolling my eyes. “Some idiot is probably trying to do dark magic, and I’ll have to clean up the mess.”
I heave a sigh, pushing my glasses back up the bridge of my nose and take a sip of my coffee. It’s strong, just the way I like it and I can’t help but feel grateful for you all over again. It’s just what I needed.
I grimace inwardly at the description of the bodies. I've seen death and it's left a permanent scar on my soul, I can't begin to fathom how strongly it affects you and the invisible marks it leaves.
Your smile though forced brings one to my own face and I momentarily lose myself in your eyes. They are tried yet so full of life. The more you share with me about your past the deeper I fall into your world. I feel like a child listening to stories of dragons and far off lands, but I know very well just how real it all is. I shake myself from my daze and reach for your hand.
"John.. I am here for you. You know that right? If it's running the shop or just being there to keep you warm at night after a rough day. I've got you. This time for real." I give you a squeeze and reluctantly let go. You're still learning to be open with people and I understand that. I know I can be a bit much at times and it's something I'm very aware of.

97 days.
It has been 97 days since you reappeared in my life. For over three months and you haven’t left, I haven’t woken up one morning to find our bed empty.
Oh God, our bed. It still makes my heart hurt when I think of the time you were gone. I still wake up in the middle of the night reaching for you from time to time, no doubt you’ve noticed and are far too polite to bring it up.
I’m completely absorbed in the book before me when I feel you enter the room. It had taken a good month or so but as my heart began to heal and reopen to you I was able to feel your magick again, just a small frequency always buzzing in the background whenever you were near. It’s become like a metaphysical security blanket keeping my mind at ease.
The books I’m reading have also helped greatly. I’ve been slowly working my way through your personal collection that lives up here in the apartment. The more knowledge I gain about your craft the more comfortable I feel when you go out to do field work. I’m still anxious for the day to allow me to tag along but I understand more than ever why you’re so cautious about it. There is so much danger out there that no one has a clue about.
The steam from my tea is cool in comparison to your lips on my skin. “Mmm hey there babe! Good morning.” I sign internally when you mention the GPD, nothing good ever comes from them these days.
“Is there anything you need me to do before I head down too?” I look down at my minimal clothed body “I mean besides getting dressed! Hah”
“Actually, you wouldn’t mind covering for me at the shop while I’m gone, would you?” I know that you won’t, Ive taught you the ropes on running the place and you’ve been more than willing to step up when I’m needed elsewhere. Still, I always make it a point to ask because I never want to assume or expect anything from you.
I make my way to the door of our apartment and shove my socked feet into my boots, not bothering to tie them, and grab my leather jacket. I spare another glance at you and meet your gaze.
“Take your time coming down, I’ll get everything up and running. I don’t have to head to the precinct until after lunch.” I drop a slow wink in your direction before heading downstairs.
The shop smells like sage and burnt sugar, the telltale signs of magic all around as I flip the lights on, unlock the door, and turn the open sign on. I set out a few of my freshly made salves in the window, flicking my wrist to bewitch the display enough to draw customers to us.
It’s a subtle pull, and only those who desire it will come. It’s great for business and quite possibly the only way I’m able to keep this place open if it weren’t for all the outside jobs I take. I roll my neck with a sigh, heading behind the counter and grabbing my glasses. Might as well get some more work done in my grimoire while there’s time to kill.
"Of course babe!" I try to hold back some of my excitement but I'm beyond thrilled to get some time running the shop. Even after everything that's happened it brings me so much joy to help you and your business grow.
I'm confident that you haven't eaten anything this morning so I brew a cup of strong black coffee and cut up some fresh fruit I had stashed in the fridge. I quickly get dressed and make my way downstairs, balancing the the bowl of fruit on top of the scalding coffee mug.
"John.. babe?" I call out as I enter the shop, the smell of sage hits me and I feel my body instantly relax. I find you in your regular position hunched over a book lost in your thoughts.
I watch you in profile for a moment before sliding the impromptu breakfast to your side, popping a strawberry in my mouth.
"Sooooo what does the GOD need from you this time??"
