Adapting to Adaptation
Being a part of the wonderful program, in general, my mind has been expanded and challenged in several different ways. I feel the courses that has gotten me outside of my comfort zone has been Writing for Games and Multimedia Adaptation.
In the Multimedia Adaption class, we had to adapt our own story from The Gift of the Magi. The premise of my story is this:
Jim and his daughter, Kimberly didn't have the best relationship growing up. After the passing of her mother, things got a little difficult between the two. She had aspirations of being the best female drummer in the best band to ever grace the face of the Earth with her childhood friends. Jim always thought that she could be doing other things that made more sense for a solid financial foundation. No matter the discrepancies between the two, Kim loved her father and knew that she wanted to spend more time with him. So she sold her drum set to buy the parts for his car, that he loved so much, so that they could work on it together. Over a period of time, Jim realized that a relationship with her daughter is far more important than his ideals that he forces on her. He sells his car to make a huge investment in paying for a venue for them to put on a show. They see the sacrifice made and start fresh in their relationship with one another.
With the help of my peers and my professor, Mark McCain, I was really able to turn this into a story where it became relatable. The major differences from my story and The Gift of the Magi is the relationship between the main characters and that speaks to the deeper issues of grief and broken relationships. I believe this assignment has added depth to me as a writer and motivates me to continually step outside of my comfort zone. I will continue to adapt short stories, novels and anything that I feel that can be modernize to become relatable to today.
From this, I was able to create a listicle in hopes to promote this piece to all those who are experiences brokenness in their relationships especially with Fathers.
Gamification Across Different Mediums
I didn’t realize how much “gaming” is in everything that I do. Whether it’s earning reward points to receive a special prize from my favorite coffee company, to create a healthy competitive environment within the workplace, or through advertisements within social media campaigns where there are certain steps you follow to obtain a prize/gift.
GAMIFICATION IN THE WORKPLACE
I didn’t realize this, but my current job loves to through competitions every once in a while. During our spirit weeks, correlated with holidays mostly, we would go about doing different task each day and by doing them correctly would yield a prize. It creates a positive atmosphere and cohesive among one another to be able to learn about one another and work together more effectively.
GAMIFICATION IN SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGNS
I know this is a tactic that I personally use to increase followers, like and comment engagement and give away gifts to those who participate. I didn’t really think about it as a game, but it is! There are steps one must take and follow in order to be considered for the prize. If done so incorrectly, you miss the chances of winning a prize. Here’s a cool article I found about the 5 Ways Can Magnify Social Media Campaigns: https://socialmediaweek.org/blog/2016/10/gamification-can-magnify-social-media/
GAMIFICATION IN STARBUCKS
When it comes to this, gamification fuels loyalty. The fact that I am able to collect points in order to get a free drink, keeps me continually buying from them and eager to spend money to EARN something free. It becomes more than just a game, but a method to prove loyalty and drive to continue buying a quality product with the opportunity to get something that you don’t necessarily have to pay for.

My Writing Journey
A few months ago I patterned up with a friend and directed a documentary series based on his life as a stay-at-home father, husband, full time actor and director and coach to aspiring actors and directors. The name of the show is called C.A.$.H: Confessions Of A Spiritual Hustler if you want to check it out. Prior to directing this series, I had no clue on really how to do this other than studying different documentary series that are already out there and mainstream.
Part of taking this Masters Program was to grow in my knowledge and application to writing and creating amazing content from various perspectives. Coming into the Creative Writing program, I knew that the different classes in the course would change the trajectory of my entire career. My goal as writer is to be able to write in various forms outside of the content I’m more apt to writing which is drama. In this class, I tried my hand at comedy and got some really great responses back from my peers and professor respectively. Taking part in the Episodic and Serial Writing class unlocked my creativity in a completely different way.
Going into the class assignment I was not really confident and really was struggling with what I wanted to write. After reading over previous work and many pep talks with friends, I was inspired to write without barriers and just allow myself to dream. This class has shown me the capabilities that I have as a writer and the many projects I am able to take on with confidence. I am currently using these skills in various ways and one of which I’m looking forward to apply within my portfolio for this Masters program. I can definitely see myself doing this not only as a career but something leisurely. I love creating stories and taking my friends on adventure with my words.
Creative Writing Idea #3: To update my company website to reflect my current skills and abilities to serve others.
Creative Writing Idea #2: To revise some of the scripts that I have started and complete them.
Creative Writing Idea #1: Write and submit scripts to different competitions and/or production companies seeking content
