Show some respect, people.

The story of Balto is interesting. He led a team of sled dogs across the Alaskan wilderness in the dead of winter with diphtheria antitoxins to stop an outbreak in Nenana Alaska. Diphtheria is a deadly infectious disease that could wipe out a third of a town’s population. It is mostly unknown to the public today because of vaccines. Balto’s body is preserved in the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.
He’s a big hero of mine!
Let’s not forget Togo! Who, at 12 years old during the serum run, lead his team 200 miles through much more dangerous conditions during the first leg of the journey before Balto ran the last 55-mile stretch.
Togo and Balto didn’t bust their asses for dying children for you to turn around and not vaccinate your damn kids
I’m so tired of the idea that in order to enjoy science or be apart of the scientific community you need to be an atheist and a hard cold skeptic.
Y’all really need to stop trying to conflate science and the scientific process with atheism. Atheism is a belief. Science is a process and a job, a process scientists get often very wrong.
I’m tired of atheist assholes being surprised or even angry daresay for me a religious person pursuing a scientific career
“Science is inherently in opposition with religion.”
*only uses examples of Western Christianity*
Where’s the “your experiences are not universal meme” when you need it
🙄🙄🙄
Science being inherently in opposition to religion would be news to a lot of religious people who love science or are literally scientists, lol. @adamavshamayim @jewish-kulindadromeus
> is a palaeontologist
> is going to become a rabbi
Man, bland-geek has some learning to do
So to explain to the crowd that follow me here:
Atheism is the belief that there is no deity. This is a belief. The presence or absence of a deity is literally unproveable, and if you can’t prove it, then your opinion on the matter one way or the other is a belief. The only non-belief about a deity is Agnosticism.
Science is the process of gathering information about the natural world based on observations and hypothesis testing. If you can’t test it, then it can’t be proven, and it is - thus - a belief (to go back to atheism being a belief system)
Religions are systems of ritual, belief, eschatology, ethics, and culture that unify a group of people. These systems are often used to enforce power structures or expand power, and in these cases religions can often be bad. But religions are also often a means of generating cultural unity, familial ties, and survival amongst minority groups. In these cases, religions can often be good. Both sides of the coin (proselytizing religion versus non-proselytizing religion) have exceptions to the trend of goodness versus badness, but religion is not inherently good or evil.
Religion and Science are not in opposition except for when science disproves a belief held by a particular religion, and that religion is unable to adapt in response to this disproving. But religion and science seek to do very different things, and answer very different questions.
Religions are also not inherently based upon belief. Some emphasize belief more than others. Christianity is a very belief based religion. Some religions emphasize ritual more than others. Judaism is a very ritual based religion. It has very few universal beliefs, and, thus, science and Judaism very rarely conflict (mostly in the more isolated communities of our people).
You cannot - cannot - use your knowledge of Christianity and the functions of Christianity to generalize other religions, especially those that are not proselytizing religions like Christianity is.
Religions that seek converts (proselytizing religions) inherently wish to control the actions and beliefs of others. The reasons vary, but those religions that try to get others to convert have a different outlook and different consequences than those that do not. Judaism does not seek converts. Judaism has very few set beliefs. Judaism is, oftentimes, defined literally as “the opposite of Christianity”, as the major structure of Rabbinic Judaism was formed after Christianity was crystallizing as the power-driving religion of the Roman Empire.
Most people who follow this blog come from societies that are primarily Christian. This usually means that the religion of your ancestors is Christianity. You might also be Christian yourself, or areligious (agnostic), or atheist, or some other religion. But you come from a culturally Christian background, and unless you actively join another religion that has cultural immersion as a part of the program, you can’t actually escape that. People from Christian backgrounds who are atheistic or agnostic have very different views on religion, culture, and society than those who aren’t. They are still culturally Christian.
This is a very long-winded story to say that those who are culturally Christian do not understand the scope of religions, especially those that are not belief-based or proselytizing, and thus making broad, sweeping generalizations about “religion” when you are culturally Christian is not a good idea in any sense of the word - especially since, odds are, the people you’re most hurting are oppressed minorities in your society.
So, you know, remember the word is complicated. As per usual.
Sincerely,
A Paleontologist who is going to become a Rabbi

*takes a fat sip of my tea* what a great day to remember that you cannot “detox” your body, nor do you need to!!! your liver works very hard to do that for you (your liver, coincidentally, does not need to be “detoxed” either).
also a fantastic time to remember that detox/weight loss teas are diuretics and are designed to shit yourself to a certain weight, activated charcoal is useless unless administered as poison control by a medical professional, and please get yourself vaccinated!!!

the saddest sight in the world is a married couple at a musical and the wife is super excited and happy and the husband looks like he was dragged along and he’s making a big deal about how much he doesn’t want to be there and the wife gets embarrassed or ashamed. this isn’t a funny post, it’s actually heartbreaking and i see it happen at like every other musical i attend.
Yeah, as an usher what makes me sad is when I see wives clearly dressed in their Sunday best, beaming and buying merch and smiling at me as I hand them a program, toting some guy dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt who declines a program. And that’s at least a quarter of the couples who come in or more. Like come on man, she really loves this stuff, can’t you try to enjoy it for her at least?
About as bad as when you see a big-eyed kid who looks like this is the greatest day of their life, all excited to see this show, and their parent/grandparent/aunt/Cousin/Friend/whoever they convinced to take them keeps making fun of them and saying how dumb or ridiculous they’re being. For Gods sake, this is a person you care about and this is a thing that means a lot to them. Smile, get off your phone, and be happy for them.
This goes for ANY loved ones’ interests. Doesn’t matter the interest, doesn’t matter the loved one. Example: my hubby loves airplanes. He works in the aviation industry. He basically has avgas flowing in his veins. No matter where we go on trips, he’ll find an aviation musuem. I don’t mind aircraft museums, but he will literally stop and take photos of rivets. Seriously. One time I was with him at the National Air and Space Museum and I had my nice DSLR camera and he asked if I could take some photos of the seams of the SR71 with “your good camera,” and you know what? It wasn’t my favorite subject to photograph, but I gladly did it because it made him happy.
BTW, we’ve been doing this for the 30+ years we’ve been together. He comes with me to symphonies and art galleries and lets me have the remote during hockey season to the point where he’s now a fan. I know he’s daydreaming about airplane engines a majority of the time, but he’s there and trying and I love that about him.
So yeah, be present for your favorite people and make an effort. It will pay joyful lifelong dividends you can’t begin to imagine.
so, this is what i’ve done all day apparently
this is a fantastic guide, A++
Night Watch is my personal favorite, too. Got me into the rest of the series. Also, I highly recommend Monstrous Regiment (you want feminism, here it is) and any of the Death books. Like, any. Death is one of the best characters in the Discworld.
(Word of warning: Those like me who have a corporal punishment squick, watch out. Sir Terry did have one particular blind spot there and he WILL set that off. Only once or twice a book, generally, but still. Just so you’re warned.)
The first book that really made me really like the series was Small Gods (2nd or 3rd book I read). I think Reaper Man is the first REALLY amazing one. My all time favourite is Night Watch, Going Postal is a close second.
For anyone who’s been generally vaguely interested in checking out the Discworld canon but daunted by the number of books or confused where to start
*sees spoiler about character death*
ok but maybe that won’t happen when i watch it
I found a company called “Frantic Meerkat” who makes journals whose sole purpose is to call me out
This is by the Mincing Mockingbird guy (of “I’d sell you to satan for one corn chip” and “The risk I took was calculated, but man, am I bad at math” fame) and you can buy them here

This isn’t directed @ anyone specific just a side effect of some stuff I’ve been dealing with lately but for whoever needs to hear it, as a 25 year old who has seen many friendships fall apart in my days, one of the most important social skills you need to learn how to do is approaching someone in your life when you have a problem with something they said or did
I think social media and general internet talking is great and all but it gives way to a lot of really bad habits like, reading a message and getting upset, ignoring the other person, unfollowing/blocking in response, things that would otherwise be noticeable in a face to face interaction
It’s not healthy or productive at all to stew in frustration while the other person has no idea you’re even upset, and when (or even if) you finally let them know days or weeks or god only knows how long later, you’ve given yourself way too much time to dwell into more extreme feelings. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had vicious arguments over things that were as simple as a misinterpretation of what I said and could’ve been solved in 5 minutes had they just said “hey, that hurts my feelings”
I know approaching people can be difficult and scary, but being an adult and maintaining adult relationships absolutely requires this basic communication skill. If you see a therapist, this is something they can absolutely help you with!
