Founding: Nalanda was founded during the Gupta Empire era (around the 5th century CE). It attracted scholars from across the world, making it a hub of knowledge and culture.
Golden Age: Operating until the 13th century, Nalanda played a crucial role during the “Golden Age of India.” It thrived under the patronage of Indian and Javanese rulers, both Buddhists and non-Buddhists.
Curriculum: Nalanda’s curriculum covered major Buddhist philosophies like Madhyamaka, Yogachara, and Sarvastivada, along with subjects like the Vedas, grammar, medicine, logic, mathematics, astronomy, and alchemy.
Renowned Library: The university boasted a renowned library, a treasure trove of Sanskrit texts. Pilgrims like Xuanzang and Yijing carried these texts to East Asia.
