Countdown to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015: 24 qualified countries

AFRICA / CAF : Nigeria and Cameroon qualified for Canada 2015 as the top two finishers at the CAF African Women’s Championship, and Côte d’Ivoire claimed third to round out the trio headed to FIFA Women’s World Cup.

- Cameroon - Côte d’Ivoire - Nigeria

ASIA / AFC : Korea Republic, China PR, Japan and Australia reached the semi-finals to qualify for Canada 2015, while Thailand won a play-off against Vietnam to reach the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

- Australia - China PR - Japan - Korea Republic - Thailand

EUROPE / UEFA : Switzerland, England, Norway, Germany, Spain, France and Sweden qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, while Netherlands won a play-off against Italy.

- England - France - Germany - Netherlands - Norway - Spain - Sweden - Switzerland

NORTH, CENTRAL AMERICA AND CARIBBEAN / CONCACAF : As hosts of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Canada have automatically qualified for the tournament. United States and Costa Rica qualified for Canada 2015 after winning their semi-final fixtures at the CONCACAF Women’s Championship, while Mexico earned the final automatic berth by finishing third.

OCEANIA / OFC : New Zealand topped the OFC Women’s Nations Cup - which also featured Papua New Guinea, Tonga and Cook Islands - to win through to FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.

SOUTH AMERICA / CONMEBOL : Brazil and Colombia booked their place at Canada 2015 as the top two finishers from the Copa America Femenina 2014, while Ecuador won an intercontinental play-off against Trinidad and Tobago.

What better way to mark the upcoming draw of the Women’s World Cup draw than to relive a past world cup. The above clip, part of a FIFA documentary showing the development of women’s football, takes us down memory lane to China in 1988 for the unofficial debut of the Women’s World Cup. The tournament would eventually be won by Norway in a final against Sweden. It would also prove to the FIFA powers-that- be that world was ready for an a Women’s World Cup. 

You can watch the rest of the documentary on the FIFA Youtube page. Particularly interesting are the segments featuring the 1991 Women’s World Cup (held in China and won by the USA) and the 1995 Women’s World Cup (held in Sweden and won by Norway)
