“I’m not sure I have time, I’ve got a bunch of chores around the house.”

He laughed at Pandora’s reaction and closed the file he was looking through. Though she had every right to be jumpy given the circumstances, he still found it rather amusing. “You’ve got some pretty funny ideas of what a cat burglar is.” Jack wrinkled his nose back playfully at Pandora and peeked over to see what file she was looking at. “’Course I got you tea.” he said softly. “We’ve got to be at the top of our game.”
“I found a few old expense reports,” he said after a sip of coffee. “Old articles on the Minister. Nothing that really helps. What about you?” Jack looked at the daunting stack of files in front of them and sighed. After another few sips of coffee and some contemplation while looking through old files, he glanced at Pandora. “Y’know, I might be able to get us into the Ministry to do some lookin’ around…”
She elbowed him gently in the side, “stop it, you know what I mean.” She was grateful for the tea, though, and it did help her to calm down and focus.
“Yeah, I really haven’t found much,” she said, annoyed, “General correspondence with spokespeople. A bunch of information on stuff, but nothing on Ibis. It’s almost weird how little we have on the guy. D’you think no info means something?”
Pan looks up at his suggestion. “Really? That would be grand. I haven’t gotten past the aurory - crime reports, you know. A look around some more classified areas, it could give us something to go off of, at least.”

Pandora startled, turning around with a gasp, eyes wide.
“Merlin’s beard, you scared me!” she hissed, and then clapped her hand over her mouth, “and shhh”
The two had split up at lunch deciding to look for leads separately to avert suspicion. Jack rejoined Pandora after a fruitless search and a quick coffee for himself and a tea for her. “Hey.” When she turned around so suddenly Jack flinched, nearly spilling her tea. “Easy Pan,” he reassured quietly and offered her the small cup. “It’s just me.” He hadn’t meant to scare her but it seemed the situation made for some intensity. “We work here y’know. No sense in acting like we don’t belong here.” Jack sipped his coffee and flipped through a nearby case file to look through it. “Just act casual.”
“Yeah, well- maybe you should act less like a cat burglar and we’ll talk,” she responds defensively, a tad embarrassed at her own reaction. “I’m super casual. Casual is my middle name.” She casually picked up the file she’d been reading and stuck out her tongue at him. She then spotted the cup of tea and all was forgiven. “Aw, you got me tea? Thank you, you’re a saint!”
“Did you find anything?” she asked, as she took a sip of the hot drink, curious to see if his search had been more fruitful than hers. “I haven’t found jack about anything related to Ibis.”
Party Favors | Year 6-1971
The last batch was finally finished and just in time for the party. Sawyer sits in an old potion’s classroom stirring a pot filled with spices, fermented fruits, and several bottles of vodka. He knew his latest concoction was ready because he was finally able to drink it without feeling like his insides were set aflame.
This one would be a hit. He begins to fill several mason jars, already counting the coin he was going to make tonight. It was getting late and he had a long trip from the dungeons to the Ravenclaw common room. He finishes stuffing his sacred jars into a large duffel bag, and turns to leave when someone swings the door open.
“Merlin! You scared the shit out of me..”
Pan has been looking for one of her only friends for a while - not quite ready to face the Ravenclaw party without some friendly faces - before thinking of the old potions classroom and she feels supremely un-Ravenclaw-worthy for a second before heading right that way and slamming the door open.
“Sawyer! There you are, the party’s going already, did you plan on coming?” she rushedly asks. She notices the duffel bag and frowns, “Did you finish the- what did you call it? The alcohol stuff? Oh man, they’re going to love you upstairs.”
She smiles excitedly at the older boy - she has never really been to a party before and most of her peers have been banished to their dorms, but Saw promised he’d let her stick around.
Library loitering | Hogwarts
May 1972 | fifth year
Pandora, head resting in her hands, was staring out of the window of the library, attempting to get some secondhand enjoyment from the younger students spending their free saturday in the sun by the lake, while she was holed up in the library studying for her O.W.L.s. Her potion cue-cards lay before her, halfway done.
She looked up, startled out of her daydream of dipping her feet in the lake, when a familiar figure stopped at her table.
“Hi!” she said, her voice raspy, as she realized she hadn’t really talked to anyone today,

“It would have faulted in your presence,” his tone was soft and he reached out brushing lightly across her cheek, to tuck a strand of loose hair behind her ear. “I’m glad to be back. I will never venture away from your side again.” His eyes were intense as he looked at her. He took a deep breath and lent back into his chair. “Doxies? Really that sounds amazing!”
A chuckle escaped him as he pictured her biting into the unfortunate cookie. “Well, I hope you cleaned your teeth thoroughly after that.” He nodded, “If I think of anything I will let you know but for now all I need is your presence and the wonderful cups of tea you make.”
He peers down at his cup. A knot of guilt forming in his stomach, he shouldn’t be feeling so annoyed at her happiness and enthusiasm for her job but it stung to see her in love with The Prophet. “No no,” he shakes his head placing the plate down. “Just not use to eating at this time. Timezones and all that malarke.”
She leaned into the warmth of his hand on her cheek, a similar warmth bubbling up inside her. Without really thinking about it, she followed him as he leaned back and kissed him, ever so gently on the lips. It felt as wonderful as she remembered - perhaps better.
“Sorry,” she muttered as she pulled back, “Your words were so romantic and you looked particularly unkissed. I couldn’t let that continue.”
“Yes I certainly did, with soap and everything,” she admitted with a laugh. “The tea is from the garden too! I’ll show you the herbs I’ve planted, too, but the doxies really are a sight. I’ve left out some juice for them and I’ve never seen any so plump and happy - I really don’t understand why people only treat them as pests. They’re quite lovely when you give them some scrap fabric and fruit.” She sighs, “I’m so glad you’re home. I never feel like I can say these things to anyone without them laughing at me.”
“Oh, goodness, you must be quite tired after all the traveling and here I am yapping your ears off,” she says, relieved.

“Er…yes, actually. That’s Bill’s. Sorry, he’s…”
Molly doesn’t have a lot to say for him, except for the fact that if he so recklessly sent a magic ball into the neighbor’s garden again, that she was going to ground him from this year into next.
“What’s a hypnocoste?” she asks to make polite conversation as she begins to look for the ball.
“Aw shucks,” says Pandora, blowing a strand of hair out of her face with a raspberry, now that she doesn’t have to be quiet anymore, “Well, I suppose I should know better than to think I could sneak up on one. Hold on, let me help you look.”
“Oh, it’s more of a rumoured magical creature, but supposedly they’re these outlandish looking pixie-like creatures that have a crazy defense mechanism. When they see you’ve spotted them they can make you believe you’ve been dreaming. You’d never think about the encounter twice. I thought that if it was one and I could sneak up on it, I might remember.”

He chuckles, the tips of his ears burning slightly.
“Merlin, that might be one of the sweetest and strangest things anyone has ever said to me.”
Benjy orders another round for both of them, sipping on his drink and closing his eyes for a moment.
“He was an arse. And if we’d gotten caught, given seniority and the fraternization rules, I would’ve been the one kicked off the team.”
He shrugs.
“Sometimes, after we broke up of course, I wondered if he was trying to get us caught on purpose…he was jealous of me. Which sounds so dickish but he even said it-I was a better flyer than him and he hated it.”
He takes two big sips of his drink.
“He wanted to marry me, I said no. My career was more important, you know? And now, even though that literally crashed and burned it…”
Benjy tilts his head to the side, studying his new friend.
“Do you believe in fate, Pandora?”
It sounds like a come on, and he’s too drunk to correct himself.
“I think I needed to break up with Graham Beckett cause I needed to fall…cause if I hadn’t fallen?” He gestures vaguely to the room around him.
“None of this would be happening. Not to me. You know?”
“I pride myself on sweet and strange,” Pandora nods, sagely, “It’s the best way to be.” The way he holds himself suddenly reminds her viscerally of Sawyer - that same beaten dog vibe, just happy to receive any kind of affection.
“I mean it tho, you shouldn’t sell yourself short - if people make you feel like they’re ashamed of you, they're the ones who are not worthy of your time and they can piss off. You don’t need that shit.”
She leans on the bar, sipping on the drink that sort of appeared in front of her - did he order them, she’s not even sure anymore. She’s listening attentively though, studying Benjy’s in return with squinted, thoughtful eyes.
“Yeah,” she says, dumbly. “I mean- yes, I believe in fate. As so much that life or fate or the universe, whatever you want to call it, makes us face the tough decisions we need to make and we seal our own by making them.”
“Does that make sense at all?” She hopes it does. “Rock bottom is a solid base, or so I’ve heard. I- I think I envy you a little.” She laughs at herself when she says it. “Not that I’d want to go through what you went through, it sounds like a terrible time - but at least you’ve built everything you are yourself, you know? You took that rock bottom and you built something on it.”

“Sorry - SORRY,” Molly mouths, holding out her hands to catch herself. “Didn’t mean it, I was just…”
And she realizes that any excuse she could potentially come up with would not explain why she is in her neighbor’s garden and not her own.
“The boys…threw a ball over the fence.”
Pan narrows her eyes at her neighbour. “Is this ball, perhaps, bright blue with yellow dots?”
“I hope not, because I was really hoping the thing I saw fly by was a Hypnocoste.” These creatures were, incidentally, also bright blue with yellow dots and fairly rotund.

Xeno takes a sip of his tea, closing his eyes and picturing some of the gorgeous things he witnessed in Bulgaria. “I would love to show you the plants that I witness in Bulgaria. There was this one that was a giant species like a Venus flytrap that could eat birds whole. It was terrifyingly beautiful.”
He smirks, placing his hand on her knee. “Your potions turned out fine in the end with a lot of supervision but I know you when you are determined to be good at something you succeed, plus I will eat anything you make.” Xeno eyes widened as he shock his head, “I really hope nobody tried those cookies.”
“Your going for editor of the prophet,” his voice caught in his throat as he looked at Pan with some hurt in his eyes. He knew that Pan was ambitious but he never dreamed of her staying at the prophet. “That’s great,” he smiled forcefully. Deciding to change the topic he eats a slice of cake with a fork, “I think Molly will be an amazing teacher!”
“The best kind of beautiful,” Pan agreed, a little breathless. What she wouldn’t give to have sen it, “Oh, that reminds me, I should show you the swarm of Doxies that have made their home by the river!” There was much new life in the garden - she certainly hadn’t been shit at Herbiology after all. She smiled at him, softening as she takes him in. “I’m so happy you’re back.”
“No, no, just me, thank Merlin. I always taste-test on myself first, of course,” she laughs, “I’m sure I’ll improve with some time and effort, but thank you for your faith. I was planning on going ingredient hunting tomorrow, so to let me know if there’s anything you’d fancy.”
In her excitement, she doesn’t notice the shift in his tone at first. “I know, it’s been such a wonderful journey, and I really feel like I’ve made an impact. I can only imagine what I could change for the better as an editor.” She hesitates then and leans forward to catch his eye, “Hey.” There’s a moment of quiet. “Is something wrong? Is it the cake...?”

Peter cursed under his breath as the sky opened and rain began to pour down heavily on top of him. He thought a walk would calm his mind, but now soaked, Peter regretted being out so late.
His eyes scanned the empty street for shelter, resting them on a woman underneath a nearby overhang. Hurriedly, Peter made his way toward her.
“Good evening?” Peter questioned, shaking the water vigorously from his hair. “I don’t remember asking for a shower.” He gave a small chuckle as he watched her take a drag from her cigarette.
Pan turned towards the vaguely familiar boy, and chuckled at his comment. “Well, maybe someone out there really needed one. You never know.”
She cocked her head at him, searching her memory for a moment, before it hit her. “Oh! Peter, isn’t it? You’re one of the rowdy Gryffindor boys, aren’t you?”

narcissa-bm:
Narcissa had been out most of the day, enjoying the weather that had been sunny. There’d been things to do and people to meet, and until she’d come across Ted Tonks it was all going quite well. Now she was in a foul mood that was matching the weather. As it started to open up, she’d sought shelter under the nearest awning, which had happened to be the Daily Prophet’s doorstep. She muttered a quick drying charm, almost embarrassed for having been caught in the rain.
“Oh. Good evening.” She glances at the other woman. She’s not exactly sure who she is just from a look. She looks out at the rain, wondering if she should just apparate home. “Do you have any idea when the weather is supposed to clear?”
Pandora narrows her eyes, peering at the approaching woman until she recognizes Narcissa B- well, Malfoy now. It is strange, that someone her age is already married. She supposes it’s the pureblood thing to do and suddenly feels quite grateful her father didn’t bother after his own pretty terrible experience with arranged marriage. She hopes life as a Malfoy is treating Narcissa better.
“I’ve not a clue,” she responds with a shrug, “I work in the building, so I’m just enjoying the fresh air.” Pan looks up at the sky. “I don’t think it’ll completely let up, but I imagine it should ease a bit soon.”
“I don’t suppose you remember me, I’ve changed quite a bit since Hogwarts, but I covered your wedding for the Prophet and I’d just like to say it was really lovely. I didn’t get to congratulate you at the time, I’m afraid.”

“I appreciate your support, but I fear I’m doomed to live the bachelor life forever.”
Sawyer takes another drink of whiskey from his flask. He meant what he said. He’d always been ‘lucky’ with the ladies, but never fortunate enough to be with someone who actually cared about him.
He wasn’t too concerned. There was so much going on at the moment, his relationship status was the least of his concerns. “I’m not sure I want to be a fool anymore.” He hated being introspective but Pan was the only person he could be honest with. “i’ve wasted too much time being a fool.”
She looks at him, unusually quiet for a second. Perhaps its the whiskey, but it feels as though the air around them is suddenly made of a delicate wind, that could be disturbed by any breath beyond a whisper. “It’s easy to be who the world believes you to be, rather than who you are,” she says, softly, “Or to be the fool- to play the part.” She reaches out, gently linking her pinky with his. “And perhaps, when we do, we lose a little bit of ourselves.”
“But the things we lose have a way of coming back to us, you know?” She nudges him gently. “And if you want to make a change, try something new, you absolutely can and I know I’ll still be the best friend of whoever that turns out to be.” Pan smiles at him, hoping she makes some kind of sense to him.
“And you know, fools weren’t always just jesters and idiots, they used to function as truth-tellers and subverters of the status-quo. You know, in Shakespeare and such. So I don’t think it suits you that badly.”
Old Paper and New Friends | Pandora & Lily
vivacious-lilium:
Lily laughed. “Perhaps it did.” She’s always admired Pandora’s ability to see little moments as extraordinary. She watches as the milk and sugar float by, thinking it creates a rather enchanting image, surrounded by all the odd bobbles in the room as they are. “Were you a troublemaker when you were younger?” Lily suspects that perhaps the urge hasn’t faded if Pan is looking to delve deep into this Ibis mystery. Lily will have to be careful about what she says and how she says it. Thankfully she doesn’t know much to begin with, so it’s unlikely that she’ll slip up and let loose any Order-only details.
She takes the mug with a grateful smile. “Thank you, this mug is darling.” The little frogs are adorable, and it brings the coziness of the room together even more. “I understand what you mean. With everything that’s going on, it’s hard not to feel a bit blindsided by the time ticking on. Sometimes I still wake up wondering what I’m doing in my flat when the Gryffindor dormitory has felt like home for so many years.
“I’ve read a few of your articles in the Prophet, you’re an excellent reporter.” Lily tries to stay up to date on everything going on, which makes the Prophet a staple in her morning routine. Her smile brightens just a bit as Pandora mentions a trip around the world. “Why am I not surprised he went traveling? How is he? Is it nice, having him back?” She’s not trying to pry or anything, just trying to make friendly conversation.
“Oh, absolutely.” Pandora replies, with a mischievous grin, “I loved getting into all kinds of trouble.” She curls up on the couch across from Lily. “When I was very small I used to go around the bookstore and tie people’s shoelaces together, they never noticed.” It was when she found out she was quite good at making sure people didn’t notice her when she didn’t want to be noticed. Quite a handy skill. “I imagine you weren’t always the picture-perfect head-girl either? You must’ve gotten in trouble!” Lily seems much to feisty not to have stirred the pot.
“Oh, I completely understand. I miss Ravenclaw tower so much. I feel like I didn’t appreciate it enough at the time- being close to all my friends, not having to clean up, the view. Gosh, it was wonderful.”
She shifts, almost a little awkwardly. “It’s- well, it’s great having him back, but we’re still getting our footing a little, you know? It’s been a while after all.”
“Now that we’re settled,” she continues, changing the subject a little quickly, “I’d love to pick your brain about this whole mystery-ministry disappearing act.” She leans over, “I personally don’t believe a word of that pamphlet. My father knew Ibis was awol days before the pamphlet went around.”

“Well it helps being an an office that people mostly forget about.” He says with a chuckle, no hint of bitterness.
“Misuse of Muggle Artifacts.” He clarifies. “Sounds more exciting that it is, I’m afraid. Well I mean, I find it terribly exciting, but you know, people muddling with things they shouldn’t be, most of the time it’s harmless experimentation. And if I do catch someone being erm…intentionally bothersome towards the muggles it gets handed over to the aurrors-”
Arthur stops himself and clears his throat.
“Sorry, if you get me on about that, it’s hard to stop. But it’s good you’re shaking things up a bit. All the dim-wits who’ve been there for so long that they’re practically molding could use a good shake now and then.”
He sighs, still not feeling like he’s saying the right thing.
“I dunno, Pan. I guess just…I don’t even know you that well, objectively speaking, yeah? And I can tell you’re pretty incredible-so he should be seeing that too. And if not…well, then you’ve got your answer in a way.”
Pandora gapes at him, genuinely aghast. “Mis-use of muggle artifacts,” she repeats, slowly, “How do people improperly use muggle things?” She’s genuinely curious and there’s a spark of excitement, suddenly, as she considers that if people misuse them, surely there are useful muggle items and how had she never considered that? “What sort of things do you come across?” she questions, quite eagerly, “Please do go on about it, I love new things! I’m a bit of an inventor, you see.”
“It’s alright, Arthur, really. You’ve given me some food for thought,” Pan says, smiling softly, “Thank you, really, for even taking the time to come in and listen. I feel like sometimes, someone who is less involved sees things much clearer. Forest for the trees type thing.” He’s right, they don’t now each other well, but there’s something about Arthur that makes her feel like, perhaps, they will. “If you ever need an ear- or a hand with the Gnomes, I’d be happy to lend it.”
