Yanbaru Whiskered Bat Myotis yanbarensis

It is known only from three islands of the Ryukyu Archipelago, south of Japan, Okinawa (where the Yanbaru forest is situated), Amami Ōshima, and Tokunoshima. The species has been classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN.

I've barely opened tumblr these past few days/weeks because I've gotten addicted to solitaire. Like addicted. Giant Anteaters are one of four species of anteaters roaming the grasslands and forests of the South/Central Americas. Quirks of their biology include:

- one of the few species of animal to walk on their knuckles a trait shared with pangolins and gorillas. This is done to protect their massive claws, used to dig open termite mounds.

- a fused jaw that houses a tongue that can be up to 2 feet long!

- as pictured, single mothers carry their pups around for a year after they are born. Pups will even line up their single stripe with their mother, to give the appearance of one huge anteater.

- their closest relatives are the sloths! Another very cute South American animal.
