PropertyOfZack Review : : Pentimento, Young English
With the release of Wrecked last year, Pentimento caught the attention of many punk rock fans. Simple and pure, the EP was filled with passionate emotion. Young English similarly also made a name for themselves last year with I Hate My Friends for its raw sound. The EP shared between these two bands, is high quality and charged, precisely what fans expect, if not more.
Pentimento owns the first half of the EP, jamming out some darker songs that tear the listener’s heart out. “L’Espirit De Escalar,” the opener, is slow and brooding with heavy guitar riffs and Pauly’s sad vocals, sticking with the listener throughout the split. “No Apology” is a bit faster but follows the same melancholic road laid out in the first track. Driven by heavy instrumentals and haunting lyrics, the track is a nice snapshot of the EP’s first half.
Pentimento offer a successful cover of Dashboard Confessional’s “The Places You Have Come To Fear The Most.” The first minute is low-key, centered on intimate vocals and a soft guitar which give way to troubled lyrics in a fluid transition to an upbeat punk song. This cover is definitely a highlight of the EP.
