“Do you remember the night we met?” she’d asked quietly against the dusk.

Of course I do, he thinks. I remember the music, the lighting, to way your eyes looked and how your feet moved on the floor as someone called your name. You seemed radiant, he thinks to himself, you seemed so alive and at the same time, so ephemeral.

“Do you?”

He looked to her.

“I think so,” he lied. Of course he does.

She nodded, looking away from him.

“What do you remember about it?”

He laughed, looking up. “You.”

And against the night, she smiled.

-claims to be an early bird, but doesn’t rise until 10am -it takes about four cups of coffee for them to function, actually -you’re just wondering how long it’ll take until news of a caffeine overdose -their smile is sweet like creamer -their stare is as bitter as grounds -brown toffee eyes- no, wait, those look like whiskey…

4am

“What does 4 am feel like?” she’d whisper in his ear.

An odd question, he had thought, one he couldn’t answer.

She sat up, leaning on her elbow to look at him. “So?”

He furrowed his eyebrows. How does he answer? Does he tell her it feels like walking the woods with fog weighing down your shoulders? Does he tell her it’s a rebirth on a deeper scale, to be awake at such an ungodly time and to have to think so profoundly? Does he lie and say he doesn’t know, that he’s never stayed up that late, that he’s never been bothered by the past days enough to keep him up until the next?

“What does 4 am feel like?”

With a sigh, he said, “Like nothing.”

She was growing tired. She lied her head back on his chest, feeling the fabric of his shirt between her fingertips. And another question came to her mind.

“What does nothing feel like?”

He hesitated, then remained silent.

He had answered her question.

Some days got cold, and some days got freezing. But the town had never gotten so cold that birds started to fall.

He often whispered words of comfort and care. His lips would move slow and his tongue would let the sounds drip to the air, a small gift from his lungs. His chest would rise, his chest would fall, and his eyes would move around the room until they landed on her figure. She supplied a feeling of safety to a capable man, and she made him feel something deep.

Tonight, he was silent. His lips did not move, his tongue was still, his lungs had nothing left to give. His chest still rose, but with a bone-crushing weight they fell. His eyes refused to meet hers. He couldn’t let himself feel weak tonight, he wouldn’t let himself feel.

She finally understood why people feared silence.

“People think that saying goodbye is the worst thing, but have you been through the pain of not being able to? Have you cared for someone so much and the time has come where they have left, and you missed the chance to wish them a safe farewell? I’m not speaking in a metaphorical sense, like leaving a friend’s house or going on vacation. I’m speaking in a way that too many people understand, yet not enough know about personally. I’m speaking of death and the grief of not letting go, speaking of a final goodbye where you know the person is alive but you can’t seem to wrap your head around the fact that they aren’t around you anymore. Goodbyes suck, but have you ever left on the words of a joke?”

“Because you miss someone? Of course, longing is awful, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad.”

“It feels like I'm already gone. And I know that I'm not, but really though, how many more times do I get to see you before I'm gone for good? I doubt it'll be more than I can count on one hand, honestly.”

“You aren’t gone, not yet. And you’ll see me, I can promise you that. You’ll never be gone for good. That’s something we can stop from happening.”

“You say that, but you also have said that people just end up disconnecting entirely.”

“Because they don’t try not to.”

“I guess.”

“Something heavy on your mind?”

“The usual, really.”

“Clue me in. I don't know what always happens in that head of yours.

“It's hard to put stuff into words when even I don't know what to day for it to make sense. The only things that really make sense are the things I do, because I usually have a thought behind it. I honestly don't have a good sense of who I am, only who I want to be.”

“Well, who do you want to be? What do you want to be?”

“Better.”

It’s like being burnt for those moments is worth the saltwater in your lungs, isn’t it? Being noticed for just one moment, it’s worth the fall. But maybe somewhere lost boys can conquer suns, and being alive is worth living even if we’re only going to die.

He looks at her with holy eyes, ones with divinity that could save the harshest sinner. Eyes she learned to care for, eyes she raised from despair and sleepless nights, eyes that have since turned on her inside his disastrous mind. And suddenly those eyes blink, and all sights of humanity run away behind them.

“For the longest time, there was something missing in me,” he tells her. “Something that was necessary to live, some piece of heart that died a while back. But then you showed up and you cared, you gave me everything you had and everything you loved, and you gave me that something back, and I finally felt whole.

“And for a while, there was something in me,” he continues. “That piece of you that you buried into my heart, and I thought it would never disappear.” He looks at her. “But that piece is gone now. I left it when I left you, and I can’t seem to find it in anything but your laughter and your tears. That piece is gone and I cannot cry over pain, and I cannot care about anything. I ruined myself- never did I think that was possible- by ruining you.”

He pauses, running a hand down his face (was it to wipe away despair or tears that streaked his cheeks? She couldn’t tell, tears were clouding her eyes so she could only see the blur of the short motion). He takes a deep breath and shakes his head. She wants to hold and devour him whole- his eyes, his tears, his grief- and wanted to surround and engulf him, and she looks at him with infinite longing to be in his arms and infinite sadness knowing she can’t right now.

“Whatever I am- or was,” he starts, “you did it to me. You made me feel, not just alive, but like I had a reason to wake up and a reason to breathe. You have a place in my heart that you built from love and hate, something no one else has ever done for me.”
