Personally, I believe media shouldn't just be referred to as a singular, linear phenomena - as opposed to the actual straight line my timeline shows, but rather as the complex evolution of human means of transmitting information:
Media evolved alongside us. The moment we began to think and share ideas was the moment media first started to take shape: as the simple markings and drawings our ancestors wrote to represent what they thought and to show to others what they wanted to mean. The markings on the wall soon turned into letters on tablets as we learned to write what we spoke, and what we wrote soon turned into mass articles of information that was intended to be shared to the public in far and wide-reaching messages and so on.
As humanity began to innovate and invent, newer outlets for media was created - from the inventions made in the Industrial Period to the initiatives founded by early innovators and pioneers of digital technology. As we seek new ways to better ourselves and our world, media improves alongside us as it has been with us since the start in humanity's endeavor for advancement.
New Media is just another term for media's use in this stage of human history, as we begin to share and actively take part in the world's events and become more interconnected as people through the internet and in social media.
