okay, like, listen. imagine if animals formed a support group for people who aren't human. and all the resources were like "for creatures with four legs" and the birds went "hey, we don't have four legs? can we be included please?" and the other animals went "oh my GOD stop making things about you. humans have two legs so you can't possibly be oppressed for having two legs." and also no one is even talking about insects or arachnids.

Instead of leeching off all the hard work of the four legged animals, why don't the birds make their own support group? Especially since animals like the mice really don't want to be in the same group as the hawks and eagles and owls.

And if the raptors insist on invading the space that was previously the mice's safe space, it endangers the mice and makes them not come at all to what was their support group.

i sort of want to know what group they're thinking about, and what they mean by "leeching off all the hard work", and so on. because like. my experience of these things, and activism, has generally been that anyone who talks about people "leeching" in activism spaces is actually just very bad at activism.

i assume they thought i was going to bat for whichever queer subgroup they think is preying on The Real Queers TM and doesn't really belong, which to be fair i probably was! i think everyone who feels like they belong under the queer umbrella belongs under the queer umbrella. but it's also telling that they ignored the insects and arachnids, on my post about ignoring insects and arachnids.

astute readers will notice that, yes, in the post, i said it was a non-human support group and not a quadruped support group. like i said in another reply, i was drafting a response about predator quadruped species and prey bird species before going with what i actually said. it's really something that they went immediately for a predator/victim dichotomy in response to my post where i didn't clarify in the body of the text what it was about, and clarified in a response only that i wrote the post from the perspective of being an intersex person. i never said what specifically the birds represent in the first place! and i never will, because i wasn't thinking of any one specific group. i was thinking about broad, repeated dynamics i've been seeing between many groups of queer people in many directions.

ugh, i really hate all the "preying on the real queers" type discourse.

fwiw, as a person whose position in the umbrella has shifted quite a few times over the last forty years: i actually really just do not fucking care, i want everyone to feel welcome all the time, because the thing i have been trying to get away from longer than most of you have been alive is the idea that it is anyone else's business what "gender" i am or who i might or might not want to fuck.

that's it. if i get that, if i am free from people telling me i'm the wrong sex or the wrong gender or fucking the wrong person, i'm pretty much happy and getting what i want in life. and the thing is, for me to have that, i also have to be free from people telling me i'm the right sex or the right gender or fucking the right person, because that still means they think they have a fucking vote, which they actually do not.

fwiw i have a guess about which specific groups they were thinking about, because they're following a particular structure that i've seen before, but i'm not saying it because i want to see what if anything they say.

I don't know if this was intentional, but it reminds me of the book Animal Farm where the community rule after overthrowing the human ownership of the farm was "four legs good, two legs bad" and when the birds, who represented GTR communities, spoke up and said "hey we actually have two legs, not four legs like you do" they were given minor verbal concessions about how 'well you're animals like us so when we say two legs are bad we're not talking about you' but the anti-roma sentiment among the other animals still persisted because they were not actually considered when the community was planned which made it very unsafe for them and their persecution within the community continued the same as it had when the humans were still in control of the farm and they were considered anti-revolutionary because of their wariness to trust the four legged animals who clearly didn't care about or trust them and in the end they needed to flee the farm entirely for their own safety which was seen as a betrayal and that they were secretly bourgeois sympathizer the entire time.

it's been truly a zillion years since i read animal farm so i wasn't thinking of any of this consciously but given that i made this post completely off the cuff without so much as proofreading it, i wouldn't be surprised if that was in the back of my head somewhere when i wrote it. i don't think they had insects or arachnids in animal farm though. due to them all being farm animals. but like i said it's been a long time so i may be wrong.

the place I work at remodeled these split gendered restrooms into “inclusive restrooms” and never told us what they meant while construction was ongoing. I need you to know every atom of potential criticism or whining that could’ve happened disappeared when people found out this meant we got 10 fully separate private bathrooms with sinks inside. I’ve not heard a single person crack a joke about the inclusive signage. this is the world TERFs are trying to steal from you

This is called a "superloo" and terfs are actively trying to steal this from you, in the UK they changed bathroom regulations to mean new buildings have to prioritise gendered toilets rather than build superloos.

This also upset a lot of architects and designers who like the superloos. They're also typically more like small rooms rather than having doors you can look under.

I have a friend who was strongly against inclusive bathrooms because he felt that “bathroom stalls are already really exposed due to how they’re constructed, so no wonder women don’t want men in the same bathrooms as them” and when I pointed out that we could just… build better bathrooms… with less exposed stalls, he got really quiet and then said “honestly that sounds so much better, but there must be some problem with building them like that, because otherwise wouldn’t we already be doing it?” BESTIE we are. WE ARE. Old-style bathrooms are cheaply made, poorly designed, and all around bad. Haven’t you noticed that men’s restrooms rooms get weirdly sticky? Haven’t you noticed that women’s restrooms end up with giant lines? This is because these rooms are architecturally awful. And we can do better now, because we know more! And we are!!! People are actively designing better bathrooms that address known problems, and guess what: those bathrooms are “inclusive” in the same way that curb-cuts are inclusive. It doesn’t matter if the ramp was built for a wheelchair or a stroller; it doesn’t matter if the bathrooms were designed specifically for gender inclusivity or just because fall-apart-if-you-sneeze-on-them metal stall dividers with giant ass peek gaps suck. We can in fact improve our built environment to better meet our needs. Stop cutting off your nose to spite your face; stop settling for less just because someone else might also enjoy it.

Seattle's SEA-TAC airport has an all gender restroom that's a row of about a dozen fully enclosed separated little rooms that lock, with a shared bank of sinks and it's great. Love it. Lot of very strange encounters at the sinks, feels odd the first few times! But people laugh it off almost instantly. Because it's not actually a big deal to share a sink.

It's called the bathroom in your house.

Both male and female people have used that bathroom. For some folks, daily.

Nothing bad happens.

You have total privacy while in there because you can completely shut the door.

Now imagine that, but in a public building. Just a bathroom like the one in your house (without the tub/shower). With a door that fully closes and locks.

Nothing bad will happen. We'll all just enjoy more privacy.
