What I think happens here is I think Than just has sex with Light. Like I think he shows up, has some sort of glory hole adventure with Light, and then introduces himself TO Light as "Than". Light asks what the fuck kind of name is Than. It's like Jonathan, but shorter.

Here's the thing. Light keeps trying every spelling of Jonathan he can think of. Eventually he runs out of attempts before he comes to the conclusion that. Oh god. He actually thinks his name is just Than. So he gets Misa on it, who Than has ALSO been claiming he's into but notably has not rushed into sex with her and has made zero advances towards. Incidentally he's also stopped fucking Light because he doesn't want to break up a "happy" "couple". Misa then tries to kill him as Than. This somehow also doesn't work and eventually she also runs out of attempts. THEN they think to check what his fucking name is via the Shinigami Eyes.

Apparently. Than's real name is, in fact, Uncle Jesse Getslinhaumer. And as it turns out. They've been spelling his last name wrong this whole time. So whatever THAT means I guess.
