Impressive Ceramic Sculptures by Christopher David White Look Like Wood
Sculptor Christopher David White creates impressive ceramic sculptures, which resemble the characteristic of wood through a trompe lâoeil style. By deceptively molding woodâs flaws, such as its knots and veins, White aims to capture the perpetual transformation of nature and the cycle of growth and decay. By exploring the beauty of wood, he depicts the impermanence of nature and its relationship with humanity. Since White successfully replicated his subjectâs texture, colors and shape, the concept of illusion exposes the juxtaposition between artifice and nature in art.Â

Exploring music and math
How is it that Beethoven, who is celebrated as one of the most significant composers of all time, wrote many of his most beloved songs while going deaf? The answer lies in the math behind his music. Using the âMoonlight Sonataâ, we can begin to understand the way Beethoven was able to convey emotion and creativity using the certainty of mathematics.
The standard piano octave consists of 13 keys, each separated by a half step. A standard major or minor scale uses 8 of these keys with 5 whole step intervals and 2 half step ones.
The first half of measure 50 of âMoonlight Sonataâ consists of three notes in D major, separated by intervals called thirds that skip over the next note in the scale. By stacking the notes first, third, and fifth notes - D, F sharp, and A - we get a harmonic pattern known as a triad.
But, these arenât just arbitrary magic numbers. Rather, they represent the mathematical relationship between the pitch frequencies of different notes, which form a geometric series. The stacking of these three frequencies creates âconsonanceâ, which sounds naturally pleasant to our ears. Examining Beethovenâs use of both consonance and dissonance can help us begin to understand how he added the unquantifiable elements of emotion and creativity to the certainty of mathematics.

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014) Dir. Ana Lily Amirpour
Beginners (2010) dir. Mike Mills
âOur good fortune allowed us to feel a sadness that our parents didnât have time for and a happiness that I never saw with them. And I can really see Annaâs eyes in 2003. Her ears. Her feet. This is what it looks like when she says, âI love you,â in 2003. This is what it looks like when she cries. When she tells me thereâs always a new empty room waiting for her. They used to make her feel free. Now they make her feel the opposite of free.â
