Currently in Oaxaca violent clashes between unionized teachers and armed federal policemen sent by the Mexican government are causing chaos in the city of Nochixtlan. So far six people have been killed, and the authorities are denying that they were killed by their federal policemen.
After I made this post news surfaced of another person killed by federal policemen, bringing the total to 7 killed.

Contrary to the analysis of those following Foucault, neoliberalism has not led to a less explicitly violent world wherein we are merely “manipulated” by norms and beliefs. In fact neoliberalism as an economic system has thrived on violence, with its main avenues for growth being the privatization of previously socialized goods and services. One can point to education or healthcare but to me the most distinct category of “primary accumulation” (as Marxists call it) has been the marketization of social interaction through the very media I am writing on. If capitalism required the destruction of the domestic economy so that any laborer *had* to go to the market for their daily needs, social media capitalism required the destruction of nearly all public spaces so that one is *required* to go online and deal with millions of ads just to socialize. This has been combined with the characteristic rewarded personality of the neoliberal age: now we are all social media entrepreneurs, shirking off and not expressing our ‘unprofitable’ emotions for a quick like. Now there isn’t just a policeman in our head, there’s a capitalist too. The worst part, though? They’re also outside.
