MONTAGE: VARIOUS LOCATIONS. unused scenes from WICKED (2024).
Glinda's note saying "I hope you get whatever your heart desires" and Elphaba responding with "come with me" IS SO IMPORTANT TO ME.
Elphaba is going to see the Wizard, her childhood dream, but HAVING GLINDA BY HER SIDE is what Elphaba's heart desires.
A big part of the reason Elphaba wanted to meet the Wizard was because "Once you're with the Wizard/No one thinks you're strange/No father is not proud of you/No sister acts ashamed/And all of Oz has to love you."
But that's already what it's like being with Glinda. Most of the bullying has gone away, because Glinda's influence is that powerful. Plus, even when folks do still treat Elphaba as lesser, their opinions matter less because she has Glinda by her side who sees her and loves her for who she is.
Elphaba also dreamed that the Wizard would "de-greenify" her (but that it wouldn't be important to him). She knew it wasn't right that she should have to change her appearance to be palatable to others, but she still craved that change.
But then she befriended Glinda, who tried to give her a makeover that had nothing to do with changing the colour of her skin. And even that, Glinda decided that Elphaba's glasses and dress were fine as they were. She called Elphaba beautiful exactly as she was. She only added a flower and said "pink goes good with green." Glinda not only accepted Elphaba's green skin, but realized it had it's own special beauty that should be celebrated and accentuated rather than hidden.
Without the Wizard, Elphaba and Glinda would have been SO HAPPY together. Elphaba had already found her heart's desire.
still not over how imogen really spent like 40 episodes drooling over beau's abs only to immediately get the ick for her after one (1) single afternoon together
wicked doesn't have a love triangle, it's two witches and their emotional support scarecrow prince trying to be a throuple in college while a tyrannical government keeps them all apart.
The WICKED movie and soundtrack are out now!
sorry but having strains of "For Good" sprinkled throughout the soundtrack, particularly during Elphie and Glinda's most important moments - essentially having it be their Theme - was a stroke of genius and definitely didn't rip my heart out every time I heard that little motif
This was genius because it built the story in such a beautiful way. That implies For Good it's their song. I love a good use of a leitmotif. They are talking to the audience. Without words, they just look at each other, and in the back of our minds, we are all hearing "I am who i am today because i knew you", "because I know you, I have been changed for good" but also "you'll be with me like a handprint on my heart" and it's such a bittersweet feeling. And I think that's love.
I'm starting a collection (X, X, X, X)
BONUS:
It really is nice how obviously fond Elphaba is of Glinda right off the bat in the movie, with What Is This Feeling showcasing how much Elphaba enjoys their little feud. For the first time in her life, someone's judging her for her, rather than her skin or her magic. Glinda doesn't give a shit that she's green, she's mad that Elphaba's taste in clothes and decor clash so severely with her own! She doesn't care that Elphaba could accidentally kill her if she got too angry, she's too busy being upset that Elphaba keeps minorly inconveniencing her! How refreshing that would be, to meet the most annoying person in the world and discover that her own narcissism has caused her to be the only person who sees you for who you really are. Of course Elphaba would take the hat seriously as a gift -- has anyone other than Dulciebear ever gifted her anything? Of course she would gamble her own self-confidence at the Ozdust -- at worst, Glinda's ego is so massive that she would never allow her mortal enemy to be the butt of someone else's joke. And in the best case, well, Glinda recognizes how important she is to the one person that she knows has no one. The only one who gets her, the only one who has ever understood her, standoffish and rude the way a stray cat is before it finally follows you indoors.
It's a real shame this story couldn't be anything other than a tragedy, huh?
the wicked movie teaches important moral lessons like "be bisexual in college" and "don't trust politicians" and "if you push someone who's in a wheelchair without their permission, someone might throw a bench at your head with their mind"
oh no, don't mind me, i'm just thinking about how glinda and elphaba were just girls. they were just kids. they had dreams and they had desires and they had never, either of them, been loved. not in a way that was real. not in a way that mattered. they were just girls, and they found each other, and they needed each other, and they healed each other, and they were torn apart anyway
they were just girls, and they loved each other, and it didn't change a thing in the end, except for the fact that it changed them
I feel like if you were to ask Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo to do a Gelphie version of As Long As You're Mine, not only would they be up for it, but Ariana would be setting up the studio before you finish the sentence
Basically the different ways the scene Popular handled:
Book
G(a)linda: *constantly yapping and grabbing stuff*
Elphaba: Will you chill?
G(a)linda: nO I CANNOT
Movie Musical
G(a)linda: *dances on a fucking balcony railing*
Elphaba, worried: gET DOWN FROM THERE YOU CRAZY WOMAN
G(a)linda, eventually jumping down with Elphaba's help: Teehee~
Stage Musical
G(a)linda: *literally fucking manhandles Elphaba*
Elphaba: 😐😐😐😐 *gets yanked* Oh for fuck's sake Galinda chill-
Elphaba, literally getting throttled: You know what I accept my fate
Elphaba: You're lucky you're cute.
CHAPPELL ROAN — A Carpool Karaoke Christmas (2024)
proper ploys
This is your friendly reminder that Elphaba is alluded to being trans in the book <3
Edit: been informed that she was implied to be intersex, actually – sry, its been 10 years and I am overdue for a reread haha
This is just so sweet 😭
