The poster for Super Giant (July 30, 1957), the first of a nine-film series from Shintoho.

Super Giant, known as Starman in the USA, was Japan's first cinematic superhero. He was created in response to the popularity of the Adventures of Superman television series, broadcast in Japan at that time, of which allegedly Emperor Hirohito was a big fan.

Super Giant was the first of a two-part story, The sequel, Super Giant 2: Super Giant Continues, was released August 13, 1957. The two films were then edited together, dubbed, and released on American television in 1965 as the Starman film Atomic Rulers of the World.
