hey. thinking about matt woe.begone and how in episode 35 safehouse all he has is mike screaming on the phone and half-truths that don't even add up and he doesn't know that mike killed him or hunter or anybody just that he's on the run and he makes a space for mike in his house built on lies and in episode 36 respite he tells mike his life has been falling apart since that day (since mike saved him but he doesn't know that and it ruined his life) and he thought he was going insane and he has a sawed-off shotgun and he had a kid and a wife and he lost them and moved to vancouver and he listens to signal noise to drown out the sound of the road at night and now mike is here and its like theyre in college again only everything is different

college band au arthur lester—who hates hospitals and would rather die before going to get looked at, even when he's sicker than a dog—starts to shake and lives in denial about it for so long because he's foolish and self-destructive and so fucking tired. parker is the first to actually ask him about it, of course, after he knocks over one too many cups doing dishes in the kitchen and he just stands there, hollow-eyed, on the verge of tears, shaking.

and then he snaps at parker. not on purpose; he's just had a long day and his mind is brimming with that sort of feels-bad-for-no-reason kind of sadness and there's something wrong but he doesn't want to think about it because that means actually admitting to it. so he's living in willful ignorance, until parker shatters the thinly-veiled lie arthur has built when he asks if he's okay and if he's been sleeping and why are your hands shaking and arthur doesn't have an answer.

lies come easy in the same way they have since arthur was young and he snaps at parker and says that he's fine and parker doesn't need to be so fucking nosy all of the time and nothing is wrong. eventually it's been months and still he tells himself that nothing is wrong but he can't stop shaking and he isn't getting better and everyone is so worried now; bella asks him if he's eaten that day in the three-times-a-week afternoon class they share and john keeps offering to take him to the doctor, if arthur doesn't want to go alone.

and it's nice that they care about him but arthur doesn't want anyone to care, not about this, so he gets reclusive and bitter and anxious and he can't even take notes on paper any more because the shake is so bad, can't hold a cup of coffee, spends all his free time with a guitar in his hands because it's the only thing that sort-of-kind-of helps doesn't go near a doctor until john and parker finally convinced him to before he and parker hit the road for miskatonic's first tour.

at first, having an answer is worse than all the years of not knowing. the medication alone is a unique sort of nightmare, but now arthur's haunted by the knowledge that he's never going to get better. there's no fix, and the whirlwind year-and-a-half of trying medications following his initial diagnosis is only there to help soften the worst of his illness. he's going to get worse and he's been getting worse without even knowing it and maybe it's not world-ending but he thinks that the world might end when, eventually, he shakes so bad that he can't even play the guitar anymore.
