calling someone a "protected species" is australian sporting slang. if a team or a player often gets calls in their favour, then fans would often call them a protected species

however! it is also well within angel's rights to be offended to be called this. especially since there is a long and cruel history of black people being called or compared to animals

i don't think it was sandy's intention to be racist towards angel, but there are connotations with that kind of language that are very much racist, and you have to be aware of that sort of thing, especially in a league that is predominantly black women. i think if you're a part of the wnba, in whatever capacity (coach, player, fan....) then your language is something you should be conscious of

also.... i wouldn't say that angel gets all that many contentious calls in her favour......

#all the aussies on my twitter are upset at americans for “misinterpreting cultural slang” and usually i'm all for shit talking yanks #but like.... can we use our brains for a couple seconds here and try to understand why from angel's perspective it was hurtful....#it can be a cultural mistranslation but if in angel's culture she finds that thing to be offensive to her then she can be offended!
