"But now I realise... I will not know what you want unless I ask. So I must tell you, I cannot offer you great wealth or Italy. But I can offer you my love and my devotion and my hope to build a family one day.... I have spent my life on the outside of things, but with you, I am in the middle of it all."

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991)

Hawaiʻi is currently in the midst of a natural disaster if you didnt know
Apparently there isn’t much news coverage of this outside of the islands
Towns are flooded, homes destroyed and collapsed, roads collapsed, lives at risk, gas leaks from the flood damage
Haleiwa and Waialua are currently evacuated because the 120 year old dam is at risk of bursting
Mind you that damn is owned by Dole. Theyve known about it needing to be fixed for years and years and years. Despite having more than enough money they refuse
The state has been trying to buy it out from them for years so they can fix it, but the sale hasn’t gone through
Keep in mind that the Dole family were the ones who illegally imprisoned Queen Liliuʻokalani and illegally overthrew the monarchy.
If I see another goddamn person say how sad this is for the tourists whose “trips were ruined” and compare a messed up vacation to people losing their homes, belongings, and livelihoods, I’m going to lose my mind
I am so lucky that my family or friend’s are safe and the few whose houses flooded didnt have it too bad, but so so so many were not as fortunate
If you haven’t heard anything about this until now, I suggest looking into it
The sirens didn’t go off until the flood had been going on for hours. Our state government is spending so much money on a fucking monorail we don’t need rather than fixing the infrastructure.
It’s been the locals and Kanaka doing the most to help get people to safety from the start
I don’t really know how to end this
I just need to know people are aware
I need to know people are seeing whats happening
my feedback to Tumblr
posting a version here as well before I strike alongside other users for several days. I highly encourage you to submit your own support ticket and select "feedback."
-- Dear Tumblr Staff,
I have a blog I've been running since 2018. I encourage all of my readers on Archive of Our Own to come find me and interact here, on Tumblr. I post here daily and have consistently interacted with followers and non-followers alike. Some of these posts receive tens or even hundreds of thousands of likes, reblogs, and comments. I am sincerely proud of this accomplishment.
This process, this achievement, works because we can interact with reblogs, comments, and tags. With each other. Without it, what truly is the point of Tumblr? Siloing us into age appropriate categories? Disconnected communities and fostering a culture of indifference or worse, animosity to others?
The porn ban was one thing, and I understand the legal mess without agreeing with the outcome(s) But I do not understand this. At all.
No one asked for this. No one WANTS this. I don't say that to threaten, only to express my extreme displeasure with the new reblog chains, and to convey the reality of what is about to occur -- you will lose thousands of active users. Thousands.
For a site meant to build collaboration and foster interaction, this is a grave mistake. It is absolutely insane to launch this on people who have consistently valued those above items, keeping this site alive while a mass exodus occurred years ago. Those blogs and people have persisted, and this is the ONE thing that keeps them on here. Interaction with other people. Connection. A feeling of community stretching across blogs that may never be directly connected to each other.
I know you may or may not reply, and that an eventual reply would indicate that my feedback will be taken into mind. But it won't. Because this decision was forced on a userbase that had no input on the impact and did not want this. A decision that, in all likelihood, was never made with users in mind.
And yet, I still hold out hope for the consensus to alter the path we're currently on. I still believed in Tumblr, but not with this change.
Hey hang on a second
As important as it was to contact Tumblr when they made that asinine, fucked up change, now that they've reversed it, you have a chance to say thanks for reversing it.
I know that you're probably still riding the high (negative) from the stress of going through yesterday's changes, and worrying about the fate of your community, and how badly the change would have affected creators. We banded together, and we let the staff know that we didn't like what they were doing, and you know what? They listened. That's part of why we're here on Tumblr and not other places that would have just shoved that down our throats regardless of the hundreds of thousands of complaints. Yeah, they fucked up. Big time. But they also backed off, and it's important to speak on that front as well if you want them to do it again later.
So, even though you may still be mad that they did it at all, take a moment and a breath, and click here. Select feedback if it isn't already selected. And just say "Hey, thanks for listening to your users, and for rolling back the change. I like my community here, and I like that you listened to us when we asked you not to do something we didn't like." It doesn't need to be elaborate. But if we want them to listen to us, making it worth listening to us is a step in the process.
Which also means that if you added a negative review somewhere due to this update, consider retracting or editing it to address the back track on the update. If you were a premium user and you cancelled in order to speak with your money to object to the change, consider speaking again now that you've been listened to.
Staff fucked up. But I'd rather have a staff that fucks up sometimes and then actually listens to its users and fixes or tries to fix it, than a staff that fucks up and pushes through to force the fuck up on everyone. So I'm going to thank them for listening this time, and I'm going to encourage them to listen again next time.
anyways i hope this whole fiasco made y’all understand the importance of a reblog. please don’t just forget about how much gifmakers/artists/writers/etc appreciate your reblog again when this has all cooled down.
Be careful of the double-speak in the Update Post.
Staff has officially posted an update regarding the reblog decoupling, and while they are reversing the change for now, we need to look closely at the language they are using. This is a classic example of corporate "double speak" designed to de-escalate a PR crisis while keeping the door open for the same harmful features later.
The Post: Reblog Update: We’re Reversing the Change
The Red Flag:
"We still believe there's a better version of how reblogs can work. One that gives every voice in a chain the credit it deserves. But we want to get there with you."
The Breakdown: When they say they want to give every voice the credit it deserves, they are still justifying the decoupling of notes. They are framing the destruction of the original creator's attribution as a feature for the rebloggers or the loss of community. Their goal hasn't changed. They just realized their current execution was a technical and social disaster.
They also mention working "directly with some of you." This often means selecting a small, curated group of "power users" who may not prioritize the accessibility or safety needs that we have been fighting for.
