Paint brush
It’s been a long time since I picked up a paint brush and tried to paint anything. So I decided to be brave and see what would happen. I bit abstract but it has encouraged me to try again some time.

Autumn crows Black crows descend onto a harvested field, looking for the seeds men, in their hurry, left behind. Such intelligent birds Offerings to the gods
Nature
Nature is my inspiration for my sculpture and art. But I still can’t get close to being as good as the real thing.

Teasel sunset
Spikey teasels have such a fascinating shape. They were once used to comb (i.e. tease) the knots out and straighten sheep’s wool.

African mask from Cameroon
African mask from Cameroon
This mask appeals to me. I like the odd shapes, the wonderfully rough stylised features and the double eyes. I believe it was made in northern Cameroon. It has holes at the sides so seems to have been designed to be worn.
Do you recognise the style?
Do you know anything about this mask?
What reaction do you have to the mask?

Solomon Islands Throwing Club
Solomon Islands Throwing Club
This is a club from the Solomon Islands. It is 38cm long, is a little over 50 years old and was made for the limited tourist trade in the 1960s. Too perfect and decorated to be mistaken for a club that did service against warring islands, but beautifully made. I find it fascinating that even carvings made to be sold, instead of used, follow traditional design and so must have been guided and…

Work (or wave?) in progress
Work (or wave?) in progress
A work in progress. Plaster of Paris on wire former. With shops having being closed for months here, I am using whatever I have to hand. I guess the shortage of materials makes my imagination work a bit harder. Trying to capture the feel of moving water but pushing it into abstract as well.
Two people have seen this work in progress and they both say it as a lily. I wonder what do you see?

Kingsbury Fair
As the 2020 Covid lockdown continues, one casualty has been the annual Kingsbury Fair in Somerset, UK which takes place over a weekend close to 1st May. Here are some pictures I took from the fair in 2018 to remind us of more normal times. Mr Punch is probably my favourite.

Beltane or May Day
Beltane or May Day
As Beltane/May Day/Walpurgis approaches and isolation means no gathering this year 2020, I thought I would share again some of the images of the celebration in Glastonbury from 2015.
Beltane is the festival of fertility and fire. Glastonbury on Beltane brings out the most lovely people! After meeting in the town they form a procession, led by the May queen and king, walking to a field overlooking…

Family of Figures
I created these figures 12 months ago but didn’t know what to do with them. So they languished in the garage getting beaten up. In these isolation times I found myself starting to get fed up and down by week 5. So I brushed these off, repaired them, placed them on a board and painted them. I am quite happy with the figures as a concept of test piece. The photos don’t quite show the detail which…

Changes…
Hi everyone! I have been thinking about splitting the content of this blog for some time.
So these strange times we live in has finally given me the opportunity to create a new blog and post any poetry, prose, book reviews (and pretty much anything to do with written language) to the new “Words Of Delights” site.
This will leave this “Something From Nothing” site for visual arts and some of my…

Realities There was a time when I never gave a thought to the unstable nature of life and the few, so pitifully few, times our paths crossed with any reality in the world.
Jigsaw Pieces A jigsaw piece tumbles into the world So many sides Who will I fit with? Which is my best side?
African dreams
Fleeting pictures in my mind… colours, smells… heat, sun… somewhere in that half-world between sleep and waking I clearly see images that are now long gone and are only held in my memory. When I’m gone they will disappear for ever, unable to be downloaded and displayed for others to see. I can never truly explain what I see to other people. Maybe if I could paint well enough I could try to put…

How brave are you? When are you honest? With other people. With yourself. When do you really say what you mean,
Solomon Islands
SOLOMON ISLANDS The British Solomon Islands Protectorate (B.S.I.P.) became independent in 1978 and has mixed fortunes since including an bloody civil war mostly on Guadalcanal. WW2 saw ferocious and horrific fighting through much of the Solomon Islands mostly involving the USA and Japan with the islanders caught in between. Lots of the evidence of this fighting is still there. The country has…

Kiribati
KIRIBATI When the British handed back The Gilbert and Ellice Islands the Ellice Islands decided not to join the new independent nation and they became the country of Tuvalu. The Gilbert Islands became the independent nation of Kiribati (which was later extended to incorporate the Line Islands and the Phoenix Islands). “ti” in Gilbertese is pronounced as “s”, so Kiribati is pronounced “Kiribas”.…
