What Lies Behind The Mountain

What lies behind the mountain? A far and distant land? Are there valleys and flowers, Or hot and burning sands? What lies behind the mountain? A place I've I've never known. Is it desolate and barren, Or do you reap where you've sown? What lies behind the mountain? Somewhere to rest my head? Do the weary cease their labor! Or do they toil in fear and dread? What lies behind the mountain? The sun's warming glow? Should I stop, or keep going? Many has I do not know. But I know what lies behind me And where those paths have led. Of all the odd around me, Greater things must lie ahead.

Masquerade

So many names

Many more faces

When we gather together

In all different places

Gowns of all colors

Suits and ties

Behind various masks

We all hide

In splendor and fun

We make new acquaintance

Not minding we've traveled

A lengthy distance

We greet with smiles

And shakes of the hand

But a pleasant face

Is easy to misunderstand

Customs and manners

Can be refined

But secrets of thought

Are hidden in the mind

So look a little deeper

At every adornment arrayed

Veracity of Character is hidden

Writing poems is easy. Writing good poems is difficult. Writing a great poem is almost impossible. This is why I try not to think about it. If I contemplated how many actual great poems there are in the world, and how hard it is to write one, I would give up. I think poets, and artists in general, have to have this combination of audacity and humbleness. On the one hand, you have to have this grand and supreme faith in yourself that what you see, hear, touch, taste, think and feel, has importance, and will be meaningful to another human being. On the other hand, you have to know deep down that what you are trying to do is impossible, unattainable, unfeasible, impractical, out of the question, and completely hopeless. And then you try anyway.
