Fëanor, plucking him from his cradle: SO! You want your blanket refolded into a triangle and not a square. Admirable aesthetic judgement. It shall be done.

(With his other arm he refolds it with unnecessary geometric precision)

(Maedhros grabs for Fëanor’s circlet while drooling on his collar)

Fëanor: Ah! An eye for keen workmanship over fine raiment.

Maedhros: bBbbbBb (wriggling and kicking)

Fëanor: you desire to be borne aloft that you may inspect the proportions of the room by every angle!

(He grasps him under the arms and banks around the room a few times like a great eagle)

(Maedhros shrieks in delight)

Fëanor: as I perceived. You and I understand each other, my son.

Snippet Friday!

Thank you for the tag @aroacebaggins ! You posted a little thing earlier today about how hugging Elrond could make everything okay. So I decided to take that and run, and I thank you for the inspo.

Under the Healing Trees

Sometimes Men (and Elves) experience difficult circumstances. Friends or partners sail West (or decide not to), a beloved pet runs away, a young mortal begins to feel his mortality, or a new mother struggles after the birth of her first child. It’s long been known that Elrond of Rivendell is the best healer in the known world. Men have made various superstitions about the elves, but one tradition holds that being in Elrond’s presence-and especially connecting with him through words or a handshake or a hug-can sometimes heal, but always helps at least a little bit.

Elrond remembers just about everything-his first night away from his mother, the first poem he ever wrote, and the first time he ever saw Celebrían. But he doesn’t recall exactly when the Men of Bree began sending dispatches to him asking him to heal them. What he does remember is the humility and innocence of those letters… Letters that politely asked him to excuse the authors poor diction or handwriting before pleading for advice on overcoming illness or melancholy of various kinds. They begged him politely but with desperation to meet them at the big tree just past the Last Bridge as one travels east toward Rivendell.

He agreed.

“Thorin,” he says quietly. “Lay.” The word is so soft it makes Thorin want to obey, to fall down beside Bilbo and hold him until the moon grows pale and white, and the time passes like sludge. To hold him in sleep until the world itself ends. Instead, he kneels beside the bed and places the cool sheets around Bilbo’s shoulders. 

“Rest, my Bilbo. I will put supper to the fire for you to wake to.” But Thorin’s words fall on sleeping ears. Bilbo’s cheeks are red from the sun, and his skin is sun-kissed and weeping golden light, his chest rises–up and down–in soft breaths, which puff like silent snores from his lips. 

Thorin thinks he is perhaps old, perhaps reaching elderly–with the grey growing in his hair and the added lines on his face–but to him he just looks like Bilbo. He watches him for a very long time, as the sun turns the cabin hues of yellow and blue, and the moon comes dancing through the windowsill.

picture day continues. celegorm showed up late. huan wasn’t invited, came anyway. no one can tell which one tracked in more dirt. also, gorm showed up in his hunting leathers instead of armor. neither cleaned up after themselves.
