After more than a year on the land, the village of land protectors occupying Ihumātao have been evicted by the pigs. With no warning and no management plan, more than a hundred cops rolled up on Kaitiaki Village, throwing out the occupiers and dumping their belongings on the road. With protection from the pigs, land developers from Fletcher Building set about tearing down Māori sovereignty flags, trampling community gardens and smashing the education center.

Friends and comrades from Organise Aotearoa, the socialist group I’m part of, were among the kaitiaki who were evicted and trespassed today. @cyberneticpeoplespolis was one of them. Despite this setback, the struggle is going to continue over the coming days. We’re hopefully going to get out there to record a podcast updating everyone on the situation. Yesterday, we repelled a force of around 100 police officers who were intent on breaking our line and bringing in bulldozers. In 5 years of organising, I’ve rarely seen the police repelled from a blockade like this. The power that the land protectors of Ihumātao are exercising is immense. However, every day the police are bringing more and more officers, trampling on wāhi tapu and the burial grounds of ancestors to encircle the occupation. They negotiate for a standstill and then break their word in the dead of night, trying to bring through trucks and advancing their lines to stand over tents full of sleeping elders and babies. The cops are the army of the rich, but we are the army of the land. As long as the sacred soil of Ihumātao remains, so will we. We are never leaving until Ihumātao is protected.
