I've already done an extensive essay comparing my characters to the protagonists of a niche magical girl anime from 2005 called Princess Tutu. I am beyond the point of embarrassment. ...I mean, g o o d. Then I did my job. I wrote Ambrose, and by extension draw him, with the whole point that some abusers can get away with their abuse because of their charisma and conventional attractiveness. It's why many victims in real life aren't believed when they try to come forward about their abuse because, "How could that be true? He's so nice to me!"
Well, like. He is. To you. But you don't see what goes on behind closed doors. You don't get your self-esteem undermined by him on a constant, daily basis for years. You just know him as the nice guy you see at work every other Tuesday
Of course, not all abusers are this way. Some really lack this sort of charisma and people can sort of see them for the jerk they are? This explains their complete lack of friends and why the thought process of "I can change him" fundamentally does not work. This still doesn't make you immune to people not believing you though or dismissing your pain when you say your abuser sucks, because even the obvious jerks get excused like "Well, at least you have a dad" or "You're lucky though because you actually have a husband; I can't get a single date."
Here is this really cool book called Why Does He Do That?: Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men by Lundy Bancroft. It's something that gave me a lot of insight. Not just for my own life, but also gave me better ideas of how to write Ambrose in a realistic way. Feel free to check it out! (Remember to take breaks reading it though. It can be really difficult to read because some parts can hit uncomfortably close to home if you have experience with an abuser)

I assume this means Dawn and Reverie XD But also, this is just interesting to me. These two are really background characters who don't appear all that much, but they're still your favorites. Just goes to show that the writer's favorites aren't always the same as their readers' favorites, so the writer should take great care to give attention to all of their characters instead of just focusing in on their obvious favorite ✧˖°. (applies more to POV characters than background characters lol)
H m m. What to say about them. I don't have much, since they're background characters who weren't ever planned to be super fleshed out or anything. But I can give fun little tidbits about them!
First, I imagine the two of them essentially being childhood sweethearts. Met each other really young because they lived down the road from each other, went to school together, and did all the cute "aww, they like each other so much" little kid things like hold each other's hands, give each other flowers, etc. Then, they just like. Stayed together. They were the sweet but kinda annoying couple in high school where you were happy for them, but them being so in love was a little bit obnoxious. It all worked out okay though 'cus they're still married today! :D
I imagine Reverie's family owned the Sunny Hill Bakery and he inherited it. So it's like a family business
Dawn came from a long lineage of artisans. They specialized in pottery painting. So, that's why they have fine china in their house; she helps make those and takes a special interest in them
I also imagine Dream looks a lot like Dawn, just Dawn has more pink tones than orange. Therefore, Nightmare is like. The spitting image of Reverie. Like, literally copy and paste, only one looks older. Same amount of tired and fed up with the world though lmao (In earlier chapters, I mentioned them having white eyes?? It was because I forgot Nightmare's passive self was more commonly depicted with purple. Nowadays, I imagine him with purple eyes, so by extension, Reverie would have purple eyes too)
Reverie is infamously stingy about money. He's essentially the "we have that at home" parent. Dawn is the really optimistic, big ideas parent, but she isn't as great at follow through and tends to get burned out easily. Literally will start a home renovation project because "it sounded fun" then abandon it halfway through because boy howdy, was that more work than she thought
Dawn has a competitive streak. She and her friends (who are often moms like her) would notoriously get into annual cooking competitions every Summer Celebration. She noticed Blue took an interest in cooking and likes to help him learn. She kinda took him under her wing and watches over him and Paps with other neighborhood moms after their parents died
I like to imagine Reverie has his own group of middle-aged dad friends and they go down to the tavern for a round of drinks every other week lmao
Although Dawn was not raised a baker, she got influenced by Reverie, and now both of them are very sensitive to food crimes
Aside from knowing they were good people and had kids close to the same age as Ink, Asgore also chose them to be Ink's adoptive parents because Asgore's actually a regular at their bakery and sends Royal Guards to pick up sweets all the time. So, he knew at least Ink wouldn't go hungry living there lmao
So, there's fun little tidbits, I guess! Some were alluded to already in the story, but I spelled them out more explicitly here

Like, I’ve had this cute little Au in my head of error’s family being one of the kingdoms residence, and I made him like a helper for gaster, like one of the scientists because I wanted to make ink and error work buddies
Like ink goes to the gaster again ( because he got beat up ) and sees error, he’s the new guy at work that ink has heard about and like GUHHH ( i’ve said too much )
look, this Au has been infesting my mind for a WHILE, and I really wana make it in to a actual Au but idk what job to give error so he can be work buds with ink. The scientist job is fine but I don’t think it fits
I’d also put the others in this Au (like the MTT) this Au is basically just me having fun with the characters
speaking of MTT, I low-key thought of making them Royal guards that managed to bypass the system and skip the draft only to get caught lol ( maybe I’ll even make dust a scientist, that fits right)

Heeyy! Tbh, I've been dying. Summer classes are r o u g h, my guy. Literally just got done with my midterms on the fourth week of class (Then, apparently, deltarune came out and I am just so upset, man, because I won't be able to play it until I have some more free time, so I'm going to have to be dodging spoilers like the Matrix until then smh)
But anyway, h m m. That is a good question. To be honest... I really haven't thought of a job that Error would have if he was in Kingdom Ivy?? I honestly envisioned he'd be more of a... I don't even know, a delinquent sort of character? Like, runs with troublemakers in an effort to rebel because if he lived in Kingdom Ivy, then his family would still be alive. Including Dear ol' Dad. S o o... he'd be still living in the midst of all that XD
But honestly, I thought he'd be a well-meaning soul, but his friends could be considered "bad influences," which make people think of him as a bad influence too. I think he'd probably just have a blue collar job like being a farmhand carrying giant bags of wheat and stuff down in the agricultural district (especially if he's got a reputation of being a troublemaker, so those are the only kind of jobs he would have much access to, even if his dad would be a really high-ranking council member)
But also, your idea of him being a scientist working for Gaster?? Honestly, based. Incredible. I can actually see him doing that too. Maybe my idea could even still work out because perhaps his dad pulled some strings for the royal lab to give him a chance and basically told him "Do n o t mess this up," so Error's got some angst where y a y, he has a scientist job he actually really wanted, but he's got this threat and knowledge that the only reason he really has this job is because his dad stuck his neck out for him
Of course, this is all assuming you keep Error's family around. I've had people imagine aus before, but didn't give Error his canon family, which is perfectly fine, ya know. It's an au, it doesn't have to be exactly how I would do it lmao. It's just if I were writing it, Error would still have his canon family with all the sad, abusive stuff still involved. Because where's the fun in removing them, that's so much angst potential gone-
(Just think, bro. Y e e e s s, Error's dad is still alive, so he is still dealing with all that crap if he lived in Kingdom Ivy. But, the rest of his family would still be alive too ✧˖°. However, deciding to not write about an abusive family member is also valid too. You shouldn't write stuff if you don't want to)
Anyway, anyway, yes. Imagining Error as still the sarcastic butthead he is who's really prone to "string up first, ask questions later" if someone annoys him, but he's a scientist??? HE CAN WEAR HIS LIL RED GLASSES. AND HE HAS TO, BECAUSE HIS JOB WOULD KINDA REQUIRE IT
A h e m. Anyway. Sarcastic jerk Error who can still be a super cute, nerdy scientist rambling on about the scientific method is literally peak, okay
But listen. If Error's a scientist, that could lead to cute moments, alright. The lab could issue fetch quests for the Royal Guard and Ink can bring over the items they asked for and hand them over to Error. One day, Dr. Gaster sends Error on a quest to go buy stuff late in the evening (because the lab was wonky work hours) and Error has to be accompanied by at least o n e Royal Guard because of the late night curfew. And maybe. When they get closer… Ink figures out Error takes a special interest in the solar system and is working on research for it since a lot of the old textbooks about it are damaged, so he's trying to make a new, revised one. W e l l. Who has a special stargazing spot in the outer walls where the stars are especially visible?? >:)
I'M JUST SAYING. THERE IS A LOT OF CUTE POTENTIAL WITH ERROR BEING A SCIENTIST AND INK BEING A ROYAL GUARD
