RESEARCH | Plants with the right properties | South-, west- or east-facing didn’t make much of a difference in choice of plants. Main properties were the ability to withstand time to time drought, frost, exposure to strong winds and sometimes flooding when water can’t be drained directly.

REFERENCE PROJECT | Zamora Offices - Alberto Campo Baeza | Glass Facade “The dematerialised impression of the box is achieved through the double skin of laminated safety glass. There are no profiles disturbing the minimalist design, which includes silicone joints between the glass panes and lower guide-rails recessed in the ground. On the upper level, glass fins between the panes of glass stiffen the structure. They seem to disappear in the edges of the floor decks, where an intricate system of steel profiles connects the glazing to the solid core.” - www.detail-online.com

SKETCHES | 18 OKT - 22 OKT 2016 | Schetsen voor de buitenkant van het object. Deze moet spectaculair zijn, opvallen en de aandacht van bezoekers trekken.
SKETCHES | 8 OKT - 14 OKT 2016 | Het idee van een ruimte met een ‘kern’ behoud ik, maar de vorm van de ruimte er omheen wordt rond. Dit bevordert de stroom van bezoekers en is functioneler bij het gebruik van projecties. Bovendien versterkt de overkoepeling het ‘immersion’ effect.
MATERIAL EXPERIMENTS - Pieces of Reinforced Glass in Epoxy Resin and engravement of transparent Perspex | When I found some small chunks of glass out on the street I got reminded of how cracks break the light wonderfully. I got the idea to make a wall of the pieces to create wonderfull light effects in my installation. I was able to gather a larger amount of chunks in the Ceramics Station [broken reinforced glass has the perfect sized pieces] and got the idea to bind them with Epoxy Resin, to put my theory to the test.
After seeing several pieces of light artworks with lighting from the sides, I wanted to try it for myself by engraving pieces of Perspex/Plexiglass and adding LED-lights to the side.

Universal Principles of Design [2]
STORYTELLING | ‘a method of creating imagery, emotions, and understanding of events through an interaction between storyteller and an audience.’
Fundamental elements:
Setting: Orientates audience, providing a sense of time and place for the story.
Characters: Character identification is how the audience becomes involved in the story -> make it relevant.
Plot: Ties events together
Invisibility: ‘Existence’ of storyteller/medium fades/gets forgotten.
Mood: Music, lighting, style of prose create emotional tone of story.
Movement: Flow of events is clear.
-> To engage audience in design, evoke a specific emotional response, or provide rich context to enhance learning.
STRUCTURAL FORMS |
Mass structures: strength is a function of the weigth and ardness of the materials. -> Small amounts of structure can be lost with little effect on the structure.
Frame structures: struts joined together to form a framework. Strength is a function of the strength of the elements and joints, and their organisation. ->light, flexible, easy to construct [triangles]
Shell structures: Thin material that wraps around the contain a volume. Maintain their form and support loads without a frame or solid mass inside. Strength is a function of their ability to distribute loads throughout the whole structure [domes]. -> Effective resisting static forces applied in a specific way, but poor at resisting dynamic forces. Lightweight, economical, but complex to design, vulnerable.

Minimal barriers: Anything [also aesthatically] that impedes people from getting to and moving through an entry point.
Points of prospect: Let people become orientated and clearly survey available options.
Progressive lures: Attract and pull people trough the entry point.
FRAMING | ‘a technique that influences decision making and judgment by manipulating the way information is presented.’
-> Positive [action] or negative [inaction] feelings about design
IMMERSION | ‘a state of mental focus so intense that awareness of the ‘real’ world is lost, generally resulting in a feeling of joy and satisfaction.’
Immersion occurs when perceptual and cognitive systems are challenged at near capacity, without being exceeded.
Immersion is characterized by one or more of the following elements:
challenges that can be overcome
contexts where a person can focus without significant distraction
clearly defined goals
immediate feedback with regards to actions and overall performance
a loss of awareness of the frustrations of everyday life
a loss of concern regarding matters of the self
a modified sence of time

MATERIAL EXPERIMENT - Perspex with droplets of transparent adhesion | The breaking of the light is beautiful as the droplets are rounded. There was a lot of difficulty in placing a large amount of small droplets close to eachother.
