Last summer, while standing on the marble steps of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington, D.C., Madam Secretary star Patina Miller braced herself for some seriously bad weather. “I saw lightning bolts off in the distance, and then these black clouds started to literally roll in,” says Miller, 31, who was in the nation’s capital for her Watch! photo shoot. “The wind went crazy and it began to rain, and I said to the photographer, ‘Let’s do this!’ I started walking down the slippery stairs and then a gust of wind came and lifted up my long dress so it was floating behind me. A wind machine couldn’t have done that good a job. It was a Marilyn Monroe moment.”

“If I’m going to be honest, I’m always deathly afraid of every role I ever take,” admits Miller. “But I like being afraid. It means I have to dig deep within myself, that I have something else to give, and that I’m always working towards something. If a job doesn’t scare me, I probably shouldn’t be doing it.”

I think at the end of the day, I remind myself that I am so happy. Things really turn out so well for me when I’m confident in myself, when I believe in myself and my talent and constantly tell myself that I am enough and that I was born to do this. Really just speaking to myself about never giving up. This is your dream and if you believe in yourself, then others will believe in you. I try to live by that. I also try to be a good person and I want to exude that on the inside and the outside, so I’m just always trying to be a good person, thankful for my gifts and my talents.
