This young mallard duck laid 9 beautiful pale white to bluish-green eggs next to the south entrance of the Department of Interior building. I started photographing her the morning of June 5th as I was going into work. I thought this was a strange place to build a nest and lay her eggs, but this must have been her first clutch of eggs and she didn't know any better. It was still cool in early June, but this part of the building doesn't get any shade until late in the day. Employees tried to help her out by providing water in plastic containers, some sort of grain and tossing bread crumbs. As you can imagine, this brought in other animals to take advantage of the free food. On June 21st, someone finally put up a sign to discourage feeding her. In late June and early July it was in the upper 90s most days and I could see her panting as I walked by her on the way out of the building every evening. At the end someone tried to make some shade for her. On July 2nd, I noticed only the eggs in the nest and it was at least 98 degrees that day. On July 5th, I saw only one egg in the nest. Now you see them, now you don't. While recording my neighbor's trees blowing in the 50 mph winds, the trees in the first photo blew over. You can see them missing in the next photo. I had just recorded those trees and moved over to the next door neighbors when I heard the cracking of the trees going over.
