gerard way is always like “we want our band to be dangerous” and dangerous just means gay

not to get too invested in a rock band but i genuinely think gerard’s current stage antics are just the logical evolution from the stage antics of years past. he’s always aimed to perform political statements about the scene he was in + society at large, and being provocatively gay/openly playing with gender doesn’t shake up the foundations of society quite the same anymore. the intended effect just doesn’t hit so hard when any nerd with a smartphone can write a clickbait headline instagram op-ed about why gerard way is deeply problematic for “faking gay attraction for clout/money” or why he “didn’t go far enough” in a scene that was (life-threateningly) homophobic to him at the time. instead what hits everyone the hardest—especially in the music/entertainment industry—is putting grit, grime, and raw unfiltered disgusting and provocative human experiences on display without even a pretense of holding anything back. all the blood, sweat, dirt, tears, rats, screams, mud, and piss are meant to poke and prod at the humanity left behind the screens we’re all stuck centering our lives around just to survive. and the grand displays of physical affection among the other band members are cut from that same cloth. we all deserve to have real human relationships, real connections with others, and authentic intimacy in a world that forces us to be progressively more lonely and isolated from each other. once again, mcr hits the nail on the head in fulfilling a need we didn’t know we had until we saw it in the flesh and collectively realized what was missing from our lives all along.
