I don’t think this pattern is as strong as the previous two but I wanted to upload it anyway so I could see my progress and point out any mistakes i’ve made along the way.
I wanted to involve a rust colour in my palette however I don’t think the tones on the roses show enough highlights or shadows.
I also don’t really like the composition much as I think its quite easy to make out the square of the repeat. Naturally I am inclined to make the spacing between each item as similar as possible to make the pattern balanced. However I think it would be good to start experimenting with different spacing.
Here’s a new pattern i’ve been working on today.
Inspired by a Christmas bouquet of flowers!
For if you ever need some inspiration.
This is my first ever Photoshop pattern. Below is how I did it.
1. Create a diamond shape with designs (not touching the sides of the canvas).
2. Flatten all layers, then select Filter>Other>Offset. Offset by half the canvas pixel size and make sure wrap around is selected (the design should now be in the four corners of the canvas).
3. Fill the inside space.
4. Once finished, select all, and select Edit>Define Pattern. Name pattern and select ok.
5. Check pattern by using the Pattern Fill in the layers palette. Change the size by using the slider.
Pansies repeat pattern.
This is the set of three patterns together. I’ve added two secondary patterns to my design from yesterday. I’ve called the small collection ‘Picnic Days’.
Hi, I'm Debbie. I'm a designer from Leicestershire, UK. I've started this blog partly to encourage myself to do some extra experimental designs outside of my work hours and partly so I can get some of my work out there and onto the Internet for anyone to see! So at the moment I'm attempting to improve my skills in the area of surface pattern. I really love Elizabeth Olwen's pattern designs (the colours and shapes are so beautiful) and I was heavily inspired by her to create this initial pattern. I hope you like it and I look forward to posting more patterns and designs in the future!!
