Hi nioraimm98 Grant White
This show is looking pretty good if I do say so myself!
Happy 2015! First major task of the new year... Installing the Artist Exchange show at WVTF today!
It is a really special thing when you have an idea and then there is someone who says they can make it happen and then all the players and pieces come together to become something above and beyond what you initially imagined possible.
Over the past four months I have been organizing an Artists Art Exchange Project between 17 Charlottesville based artists. I have been spending time meeting with each of the participants in their studios, in coffee shops and over lunch and have filled their inboxes with countless emails.
Way, way back in warmer days of summer I approached Maureen Brondyke, Executive Director of New City Arts with a crazy idea. Pulling from a previous print exchange Mara participated in in 2008 and all the print exchanges she always did with her print classes as both a student and a teacher we wanted to do something similar here in Charlottesville.
After three and a half years here both Mara and I felt like we still didn't know very many artists around town. And of the ones we knew we felt like we didn't know most of them very well. Perhaps a print (or Art exchange in this case) could start to connect us as artists.
At the end of August, Maureen, Mara and I brainstormed a wishlist of artists, came up with some guidelines and started asking people to participate.
And people said YES. Everyone was willing to create a set of 23 works over the course of the next 3 months to exchange with their fellow peers.
Last night Champion Brewing Company hosted us all for our exchange. We lined up all 23 boxes and everyone divided up their prints. Everyone got a chance catch up with old friends, make a few new ones, enjoy a few beers, and go home with a box full of wonderful gifts made for them by fellow artists. It was really wonderful.
Luckily for you if you weren't one of the 17 artist participants there are two chances to see all the work and even get your hands on some art of your own.
One entire set has been kindly donated to The Haven for their annual Art Auction. Each piece will be available separately as part of the silent auction that evening. This year's event will take place on Friday, December 5th at Old Metropolitan Hall. For more information about the Art Auction or to purchase your tickets online you can click here.
A second set will be at the WFVT and Radio IQ Studio Gallery with an opening reception on Friday January 9th. These works will also be for sale individually with proceeds benefitting the individual artists and New City Arts.
Leading up to the show opening January 9th, I will also be posting interviews with each of the artists right here to the blog to stay tuned for that!
The photoset are quick iPhone photos from last night's event. You can search #newcityartexchange on Instagram to also see more photos posted by the participants of their work.
I wanted to make sure I thanked Champion Brewing Company again for providing a perfect venue and beers for us all las night and also to Maureen and New City Arts for really making this all possible. I hope this is the first of many Art Exchanges in Charlottesville.
This isn't the last you will be hearing from me about this project.
Never ask Mara to take a car to a car wash. Getting Mara's old car washed this morning has become quite traumatic for everyone. I didn't think getting a car washed could cause so much panic. But I also offered little help, so I too might be part of them problem instead of the solution.
It is nice to see Mara back in the studio. The new old studio is far from being in real working shape but I think letting Mara get back to work for now is beneficial to everybody. Mental regrouping.
Decaf coffee is not very good. It is not very good at all. Somehow I think if you drink said decaf as a cappuccino perhaps it will taste better. Yesterday I had Mudhouse's attempt at a decaf cappuccino and this afternoon it is Milie Joe's version (pictured above) so far my verdict is that decaf coffee pretty much still sucks and maybe shouldn't exist
We are selling Mara's 2003 Honda Accord EX. Leather interior, 6 disk CD player and sun roof. It is in great condition and has 122,000 miles of mostly highway driving. The car is here in Virginia and we just had it inspected yesterday and the car passed with flying colors. In short if you are in the market for a good used car I might be able to help you.
Yes. The insanity of Mara. This is a map of all 55 postcards that we hung today so that people can easily reference list with each work’s title. I won’t even tell you how long it took to do this, not to mention the corresponding title list.
Mara and I spent the morning installing 55 of her postcard collages at the Piedmont Council for the Arts in downtown Charlottesville. The show is titled "I Didn't Make it All The Way to Hawaii This Time." These guys will be up all month. Go see them and relive that summer vacation you never went on.
You know you are an adult when you spend you time making spreadsheets to manage tasks. Mara still prefers to write everything down on paper but lets get real, Mara is also really good at 'misplacing' all the hundreds of sheets of paper she write things down on. I have gotten pretty good as transferring Mara's pieces of paper into spreadsheets. It is an awful task that I would wish on no one.
Thanks to Mara (and Leigh) I can't get this song out of my head. So yes, Taylor Swift, I CAN NOT shake it off.
And this is my gift to you. Happy Friday.
Throwback to this post from the beginning. It looks like I started off on the right foot 7 years ago!
Yeah….Yeah….this is awesome…well more like ‘Killer.’
7 years.
Today I sat down to write and email and had to black log the blog only to discover that September 23rd is going to be the 7th anniversary of this blog. This is a fact I find astonishing. Maybe I will get myself a new desk set.
Mara and Grant spent the weekend dog sitting this little lady. Millie is a pup full of energy and like any good puppy, she never had any idea about how tiredshe ever was. Mara took this photo on Saturday after they took her on an epic adventure. She was so exhausted she never even make it the extra 5 inches to her bed for an afternoon snooze.
We got a facelift!
With the sad new of the passing of Joan Rivers, I will be spending the rest of the afternoon drinking rosé and toasting to facelifts everywhere.
Before I do, I want to extend a really BIG thanks to Jason Bennett for making this all possible. Jason has patiently held both of our hands through this process and has done a fantastic job keeping us calm and making us look good. If you are looking for website help he is your man, I can put you in touch or you can contact him directly through this address: [email protected]
This is very exciting! The new website is not live yet but here is your first glimpse at what we have been working on. And by we I mostly mean Jason, our amazing web fixer-updater.
