Open Beta Soon!
As a reminder, Pawborough.net will open for Early Access individuals in 2 hours, at 6pm EST/10PM GMT. Early Access individuals are those who participated in Closed Beta. Full public access starts 10 minutes after!
Hey all! We're excited for take 2! Here is a checklist of communication to brief on before tomorrow!
FOLLOWERS
As a reminder, if you participated in the initial beta opening and rolled followers which you would like restored, please ensure these are submitted via ticket (https://pawborough.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/categories/29942179353236-Support) BEFORE Open Beta starts.
Following Open Beta launch on Saturday April 11th at 6pm eastern time, we will not be accepting any more follower change requests. If you need information on how to submit a follower request, please read the information on follower requesting here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tbpt/paw-borough-the-feline-virtual-browser-rpg/posts/4643870
Followers which are eligible for restoration:
A follower which you confirmed on your account and was added to your den. We can confirm this follower with your username.
A follower which was rolled and provided to us via screenshot.
Any follower ticket submitted following 6pm eastern on April 11th will not be eligible for restoration. As a reminder, if you would like to keep your new followers as opposed to your old, you are not obligated to complete the restoration process after you submit a ticket.
ACCOUNTS
Some users have self-reported accidental multi-accounting, and we have released those account numbers for user population. These numbers are within 4 digits, not 3. Following opening, we will not be freeing IDs in such a manner.
THE CHIRIKAMI
All accounts registered up to this point have received a Chirikami in their storage. Any account which reached the email verification screen is considered registered.
OPENING TIME
Pawborough.net will open for Early Access individuals at 6pm Eastern time. Early Access individuals are those who participated in Closed Beta. If you were a Closed Beta tester, Early Access information was sent out via the email you used to register. Please check your spam, and in the event you have forgotten your login or cannot find the email, please send us a support ticket!
Due to limited resources, we caution that any ticket sent requesting Early Access information on opening day may not be followed up on in time. Please ensure you have all the information, and if not to reach out today! At 6:10pm Eastern time, we will open wider registration and log-ins.
In the event of intense and unfair lag, we may increase this timeframe by 5 minute increments, however we will not increase it beyond what is reasonably a simulation of a real pre-registration head start.
We ask that all users have good faith and good will towards their fellow users!
Thank you everyone. We cannot wait to see you there tomorrow! Here's to what doesn't kill you makes you stronger!
Gated entry and Fauna reward
Closed Beta early login emails are out. All Closed Beta testers were sent an email with a guide on how to login early once Open Beta starts. Please make sure to check your spam folder. Please note, the gated entry starts at 3pm PT / 4pm MT / 5pm CT / 10pm GMT on the 11th of April, only after the end of the gated entry public access starts for all users. Some emails bounced, if you did not receive an email, please send us a support ticket. Please note, Close Beta testers are users who signed up before the 21st of March. If you registered on the 21st you have not sent an email and will be able to login after the Gated Entry ends, which expected to last 10-15 minutes.
Additionally, today we are revealing the Chirikami Fauna, which will be rewarded to all users currently holding an account.
Art by Neutrino and Remmie
Hello, catfolk!
We’re back! We had our initial mistakes and learning experience with the initial try at opening registration on the 21st of March. As we outlined in our retrospective, we simply jumped the gun too early and needed to regroup. We’ve been working at a crazy pace right now to make it up, and have made huge milestones in combing the application so that we do not make the same mistake twice.
Which leaves us with the big thing everyone is here for …!
REOPEN DATE
PawBorough will reopen on Saturday April 11th, at 6pm ET!
For other timezones, this converts to: 3pm PT / 4pm MT / 5pm CT 10pm GMT
If you want to see what timezone this is for you, check out this tool!
We have weighed the pros and cons of waiting longer to ensure that we’ve really squashed all glaring exploits or problem areas in the application, and have come to the conclusion that the three weeks of improvement-grinding and structure enforcing should give us a healthy Beta application! The team did want to roll out a re-open as fast as possible, but on the other paw, this timeframe is necessary to ensure no more hiccups!
Minor bugs, exploits, or blips in the system will still be expected for the Beta build, but we’ve spent the last several weeks slamming the application with stress testing, load testing, and internal bug hunting.
In the event anything game-breaking occurs again, we will not hesitate to take the server offline so as to not waste users’ time.
BELOW CONSISTS OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR RELAUNCH:
GATED ENTRY
As promised, all Open Beta accounts will be allowed a 10-15 minute early entry, which we may extend or modify as the server experiences lag. This is hereon referred to as “Gated Entry.”
To those worried about significant lag, devs and admins will be closely monitoring the opening, and will modify the timeframe of Gated Entry as needed. Our goal is to replicate the implicit advantage our backers previously possessed during registration opening, and which is most fair and faithful for ALL users!
HOW WILL IT WORK?
If you were a Closed Beta tester, this information concerns you.
All Closed Beta accounts will receive an email which contains special access information, which will allow access to the website. Once you access the website, you will be able to register your account.
It is a similar process to our Alpha test.
Emails will be sent to the email used to register your PawBorough account.
We will be sending out these emails in batches over the next 4 days. We will post to our socials when all the emails have been sent. It is vitally important that you check your spam folder.
If you are experiencing any issues with the email after we announce the last batch has been sent, please send a support ticket via zendesk.
All the support information will be repeated once emails are sent out!
This process provides the smoothest and tightest experience for our users. If you are found posting or sharing the access information contained in these emails, you will be swiftly banned from all PawBorough spaces. Doing so would be considered an egregious show of bad faith, and we will not tolerate such exploitation.
So what have we done so far to ensure the new opening date will be secure and smooth?
Here is a list of everything we have pushed since the 21st of March:
Integrated a new server provider that is beefier and more robust. This was an increase in expense, but necessary to really insure we can handle the load.
Increased power and resources towards queries and generation.
Re-architectured the structure of cat IDs and the generation process. We tooled how and in what manner the application pulls resources, which has fixed the previous bottleneck and should prevent future bottleneck issues.
Performed a host of load tests in tandem with internal testers, in which we saw the resource queue moving swiftly. In our most recent load test, we simulated over 3.5k accounts registering and generating in the span of 5 minutes, and witnessed the server tank it well. At peak load, cats took about 8 seconds to generate within the wardrobe, and about 14 seconds to generate within onboarding. At the end of the load, the server was not backed up. These numbers are very promising. During the entirety of our testing, we have simulated over 170000 user accounts and 21000 cats.
Pushed a giant fix to the follower and founder generation process, which should ensure that illegal traits cannot generate.
Fixed a few exploits which cropped up.
Fixed tutorial-bricking, which should block the ability to create ghost cats through breaking the tutorial.
We pushed a slew of small bug fixes which are common when pushing new developments. These also include small functionality tweaks, mobile optimizations, and general spring cleaning of the application.
We’re feeling good! As stated, we know that Beta may still have bugs or issues, but things are on the up and up!
COLORING CONTEST
This month, we also hosted and completed our Coloring Contest! Thank you all who participated!
We received exactly 1200 entries. Wow! Amazing! We’re very excited to dig into the entries, and we know it’s going to be exceedingly difficult to pick the winners!
Now, we would like to share what users will be receiving if they win!
First, any user which submitted a winning color via a single Tiger recolor will receive the Artist’s Crest!
Illustrated by Asp and Hydde
NOTE: This illustration is a WIP currently receiving finishing touches.
And any user which submitted a winning color with 2 or more recolored poses (Tiger, Moontail wings, and Butterfly) will receive a Northern Pixiebell in addition!
OG Pixiebell by Remmie, Northern variant illustrated by Hydde
The Northern Pixiebell is a “Special Fauna,” meaning it is not required to own to complete the Faunapedia. The Northern Pixiebell will remain a staple reward for PawBorough’s visually creative contests in the future! So, if you missed it this time, fret not! We may also add this fauna to flea-market silver cycling during future contests, but are considering the viability of exclusive specialty Fauna rewards.
We had so much fun, and we cannot wait to host more in the future!
Please allow up to between 3-5 months for us to sift through, choose, and integrate entries. Each entry will need a varying amount of internal design efforts to make it compatible with all our gene designs, and this will take time! We will do our best to be swift, but want to ensure all new colors are appropriately screened for quality assurance!
We had so many amazing entries, we may even decide to expand the current list of additions…
Stay tuned!
FAUNAPEDIA SKETCHES
We have been working on Faunapedia sketches, which are unlocked when you reach the final Mastered level of Fauna study.
Here is a peak at the Lunasagi!
Illustrated by Remmie
FYRETS
And more new things…! Mystic genes! Right now, our focus is on the Fyret, which has about 80% of its genes completed!
Illustrated by Catafyra
Lots of things in the works! Thank you for sticking by us, and we cannot wait for the future!
To summarize: We shared the new registration date, our method for gated entry, our updates to the application, color contest information, faunapedia sketches, and Fyret gene progress!
What’s next? Next month we will post an evaluation of Open Beta’s state at the time, further asset renderings, and continuing developments.
Poll results
Hi everyone! Devs have been cranking extra hard all week on user simulations, understanding the vulnerabilities we witnessed during the initial opening, and server strengthening. This week, we did the following:
Shifted the server provider to a larger, beefier variety.
Altered the architectural structure of server queries and ID+cat generation, which should nullify the ability for cats to lock up resources.
Identified the vulnerability in founder/follower creation which was causing illegal cat traits, and have built a fix for testing.
Ran successful tests which simulated 1791 users spamming onboarding and cat generation in the span of 5 minutes.
Fixed a backend bug on the tutorial which prevents users from spamming or skipping steps to break cat data.
We're feeling good, and we believe that, come Monday, after we have a much-needed breather, we should have a date and time to announce for re-open. We still want to preform a few rounds of internal testing while running the simulations. Monday, we return with full momentum to make the final decisions on the plan forward. Which brings us to the results of the intake form! Of 920 responses, near 80% voted for a complete wipe, with a brief early login window for Closed Beta testers. From hereon, we are closing the form. Thank you for participating! In addition, 74% voted for a 3-5 day notice, 42% for an afternoon time, and 49% for a Saturday reopen! We're sorry to those who may be disappointed by this decision, and thankful to everyone who voiced their opinions and perspectives. We are sympathetic that the situation is not ideal for everyone, and we do hope to make it up the best we can to our community. Have a good weekend, catfolk!
PawBorough Beta Re-open Intake Form and Information
Hi all!
As a reminder, we experienced a nasty bottleneck bug while attempting to open the application for sign-ups. This was due to a last minute fix-push to the ID system, and it was ultimately shortsighted. We’ve been working on our fixes, enforcements, and rejuvenation of the server. As of 3/23, we have pushed a supposed fix for the locking issue, however, as promised, we are taking great considerations and efforts into further testing to ensure this does not happen again.
As we said previously, our biggest mistake was not properly testing our mechanics and making negligent judgments based on rudimentary testing methods, and we apologize and take full accountability. Our greatest priorities right now are getting users back on as fast as possible, while taking the time necessary to ensure proper quality assurance. As a 3-person dev team with limited resources, we made some faulty calls, and it’s something we have recognized and learned from.
These efforts today include mass-simulating internal user processes, strengthening the architecture, and backing up all of our current data. We are in talks with how to proceed, what is the best path forward for ensuring this does not happen again while considering the happiness of our users, and we will know more in the coming days as we draft up our game-plan. Then, we will rally our users for the future!
You all have been exceedingly positive and patient in the face of this frustration, and we thank each and every one of you, including those who offered harsh feedback; that was important too.
To give some words of reassurance: while it is a disappointing setback, PawBorough is our promise to you. The team is here to correct, change course, and communicate with full transparency every step of the way. We will have everything up and running, and there is a light at the end! We still cannot wait to see it happen, and are working tirelessly!
Below is an intake form on how we should proceed for a re-open, and what we should do with the user data accrued during the bottleneck.
There are three options going forward, as we have looked over our data, the fix, and what is doable.
VIEW THE FORM HERE!
Here are the three options laid out:
We wipe all cat data, but keep user accounts. In this scenario, any user who got stuck on email verification would be automatically verified before opening, and would be able to immediately sign in. As well, Closed Beta testers will be offered a 5-10 minute headstart, which will be determined based on general lag times and ability for users to log in. This gated entry will be quick, as it would simulate the implicit difference between those with prior accounts who helped to fund the game, and those who would have needed to create an account. For full transparency and communication: this option is easiest and quickest for us as developers. → Pros: Those who were originally stuck (testers and new players alike) are given a fair shake at sign-on. Kickstarter backers are rewarded as originally promised while not being wholly unfair, and everyone will experience the onboarding process from start to finish as intended. → Cons: Those who enjoyed their numbers will not guarantee them again, sparking disappointment.
We wipe all cat data but keep founder IDs as is. In this scenario, everyone will be let in at the same time, expected to complete onboarding with the same founder IDs they were already assigned, and follower IDs will be accrued from there. → Pros: Those who got in are promised to keep what they got. → Cons: Those who were stuck are left in the lurch.
Frankenstein the cat data, re-assigning broken cats and releasing stuck IDs. → Pros: All valid data, including founders and followers, will be restored. Everyone who managed sign-on will keep what they received. → Cons: This option has the most unpredictability, as the efforts to restore the data may have unintended side effects, or shuffle numbers around. It will take the most time and energy to do, and those initially left in the lurch are not given a fair shake.
In all scenarios, users keep their current accounts.
In all scenarios, lost followers will be manually restored via ticketing.
To request your follower be restored:
Navigate to the site https://pawborough.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new (Account and Rewards -> Administrative Requests).
Please include a full screenshot of the follower including colours, staff will not guess them from an image. This should be done BEFORE the next open beta date.
Staff will reach out after onboarding to ask which follower should be replaced. You are able to shuffle all followers and then decide which ones to replace. You may submit 1-3 followers.
You may decide not to change your followers. We can look up followers that were created but not screenshotted if needed. IDs will not be restored.
Cats containing the founder/g2 exclusive gradient colours Diamond, Puffin, Blood, Daybreak, Mango, Parakeet, Bismuth, Chrysalis, Stardust, and Pearl; will have to change these to a colour in its existing color hue/saturation/luminosity. A choice can be made after the site releases once more.
If no choice is made, the colour will be randomized after a site-wide reminder.
Cats generated with founder/g2 exclusive white markings such as the forehead crescent moon, forehead egg, and forehead star; will be generated without them while respecting the cat's other markings.
In addition, the form inquires on what days and times users would like to be invited back in, and how much prior notice is preferred.
Thank you for your patience and continued support. Talk again soon, catfolk!
Retrospective and plans going forward
Hi everyone!
On 3/21 at 6pm ET, we attempted to open the application to the wider public. We had performed a variety of stress and generative tests leading up to the open registration. The only issue we ran into at the last minute was the tutorial, where we found edge cases which could brick it, and which we cut down with the intent to prevent user frustration and revisit at a later time. Everything else looked good, fixing any issues found through staff testing. We expected to see some bugs cropping up here and there, as is customary in a beta.
However, there was a big bug which our tests didn’t reveal, and that was a locking issue with cat ID generation. We believe that our tests did not catch this because we did not simulate enough user processes at once, which is an error on our part. Our developers have been working all night on tests and further strengthening of the application.
The server itself was not under any significant strain by the user influx, but the locking created a Katamari-like effect, where each new cat added to the stuck queue, thus causing significant lag, strain, and a jumble of spiraling problems.
We were working to quickly fix the issue, but it was growing just as fast. In the end, we temporarily closed the application to prevent the issue from continuing to expand. We may have needed to make this call earlier, and we regret how this may have frustrated users.
We all owe you one heck of an apology.
And we do apologize that it took ‘til now to post this writeup. Our staff needed to rest for the night before returning! Users are entirely justified in their frustration and scorn, and here is our official accountability.
Where we need to improve:
We need to ensure more complex testing. Our technical architect has been working nonstop on building and running more tests, rapidly fixing any achilles heels like the locking issue.
What we did wrong:
We were short-sighted and negligent to allow this to happen. We feel any user upset is justified, and from hereon our testing process will be more advanced and thorough.
Our perspective:
We had to cry, then we picked ourselves up and dusted ourselves off! As sad as we are to see this happen, it’s all part of the punches with a small team and indie resources.
The positives:
The bug was a nasty bugger, but despite the query issue gunking the process for everyone, our server held up quite well under the influx of users. By peak traffic, we were using only 30% of our total CPU, and that’s great! It means that, once we address the bottleneck, the server will hold up to strain.
The community was majority positive and kind, even those who were disgruntled, bringing forth just how much goodness there is in our users. We had over 1,400 new users sign up! Another huge milestone, and we’re excited to have you all playing with a positive experience in the future, which brings us to the next point:
Our Response
First off, we will be rewarding everyone who created an account, including old and new users, an exclusive Fauna item. If you got stuck at the verification step, your account still has been created and will be rewarded the Fauna. This Fauna will only be available through this event, and we hope makes up for some of the disappointment and unrest.
Second, we are restoring lost followers. If you had a follower you liked, with either evidence through a picture/screenshot or the follower did get generated, we can and will restore it!
Before reopen, we will invite users to send a ticket of their follower evidence or request, and we will communicate with you in a multi-step process to fix your follower, no matter how we proceed! After we reopen all tickets sent will be followed up with a request to clarify which follower to change to the original. Further information on this will be released in the coming days.
We will also be requesting users to give input on the following:
What we should do with the data
The chief matter on our hands now is how we should handle the data going forward. We understand that users are very disappointed. Many cats were stuck with IDs while being invalid (ghost cats) and some users were not able to access cats at (the malformed cats bug, which was caused by the bottleneck, in which users could not generate anything). We want to ask which option going forward feels the fairest for users.
We will be releasing an official, clearly outlined form on two matters:
What is the userbase's most preferred time to reopen?
How do users want the data to be dispersed?
Whether that is through a data wipe, partial data wipe, or attempting to save and restore everything we already have, we are currently going through our options and assessing what is possible. We first made a Discord poll to see where users were at, but this was ultimately erroneous on our part and executed during a time where admin and devs were frantic, fatigued, addressing users, and attempting to damage control. We apologize if this caused any further upset or confusion.
All of the options provided remain possibilities, but we need to give a clearer and more explanative breakdown of what each option entails. For this, please allow us a few days!
In conclusion
No one came out of this experience unscathed, and we are doing our best to roll with the punches. In the grand scheme, this will be a little blip on the PawBorough timeline, and what matters most is not only that it happened, but the measures and efforts we take to appropriately and competently respond. We hope to have shed a little light on what went down, our accountability, and what we will be doing to apologize and rectify the situation.
Hi everyone! We have made the decision to temporarily take the site down for maintenance while we regroup, to prevent any further issues, scaling user frustrations, and fix what has cropped up. These things happen! We mentioned that we may run into something knee-breaking, even if it's not ideal. Not what we wanted. We do apologize, and we will fix the issue. What matters is how we respond in the face of issues and do our due diligence to you as users. Here is a general FAQ of our direction moving forward. What is going to happen to my username and account ID? We are going to preserve what you registered, so you will keep it. What about my founder and follower cats? We are considering a wipe and re-try moving forward, which would be disappointing we understand, but the amount of users left out of fair and square onboarding was unjust, and we would like to properly give these users a chance. For followers you rolled, you have rolled them fair and square. As a token of good will, we will restore them as requested by users with photo/screenshot evidence. While we know this could inspire bad actors, we are more concerned with our honest users being fairly treated. We have heard out your concerns: that by backing Kickstarter, you have an implicit chance at better IDs due to quicker onboarding. Absolutely correct, and part of the perks. If we did full wipe, we would allow kickstarter/closed beta users an additional early access by a short timeframe! When do you expect to re-open? Unsure at this time, but ideally sooner while having ample warnings. We invite you as users to share what your preferred days continue to be, so we can make that judgement. We will be in communication on our current expectations. I made a premium purchase. This will be restored! What else are you doing in the face of this? Aside from fixing the issues so they do not crop up again, we will be giving everyone affected by these issues an exclusive item available only to those who have been with us through this, which will be made available at a later date. We know it's not enough to make up for all the time and energy wasted, but we hope it can provide solace. We are currently holding a voting on our Discord to help us decide how to proceed.
Options include
Fix and redistribute everything to broken users, but keeping everything already confirmed!
Wipe it all for fairness, with a schedule that, upon polling and communication, majority works for users.
Keep current founder numbers and supplement them on users who were stuck, while wiping followers.
Thank you!
Open Beta soon!
As a reminder, registration opens today at 3 PM PST / 6 PM EDT / 10 PM GMT, a little over 3 hours! Registration will be open for everyone, and data will not be wiped ever again.
Make sure to use https://pawborough.net/ NOT beta.pawborough.net.
Update to Beta Launch Time and Demo Shutdown
We have reviewed our notes and realized that admins and developers both internally confused timezone awareness. We measured the time to the static GMT time, and incorrectly calculated American Daylight Savings, therefore the previously announced time was incorrect for the given PDT and EDT times.
We have made the decision to keep the GMT time, as the incorrectly calculated and currently announced American times of Open Beta release would leave one of our admins still at work. Therefore, we are pushing the launch forward one hour to 6pm EDT. We do apologize for this confusion, and we should have referenced a national calculator tool. From hereon, we'll utilize official calculator tools, and will not make this mistake again.
Additionally, as part of our final preparations, we will be shutting down the public demo, on Monday, 16th of March. This means you will not be able to create cats come Monday. However, this is necessary step for us to prepare the site for Open Beta. Thank you for understanding!
February Check In and Open Beta Launch Dates
Another meowth, another update! This month we have a lot of announcements to make including color contest, mod applications, and Open Beta dates!
Color Expansion Method Poll
Hello, catfolk!
Pretty soon, we're going to host our official PawBorough Colorwheel expansion event! Where users will be invited to submit colors to add to the colorwheel as a contest! By the end of the event, we will see 50+ new colors added to the wheel by users and staff.
But we wanted to ask you a crucial thing:
How do you want to handle onboarding and new colors?
The new colors won't be here before Open Beta, and even if they would be, there's no telling if we may add even more later upon user feedback. We want to decide here and now how we'll approach new colors on our colorwheel with regards to onboarding and founder creation. And we figure the best way forward is to ask you! Here are the two options:
Add new colors to onboarding as we introduce them. This means new users will have a greater pool to pick from for founder creation than existing users. Existing users will only be able to add these colors to their founders with shufflestones or the future paid feature of founder editing.
Exclude all new colors from onboarding and founder customization by default. Have new colors included only by Shufflestone and breeding use, with new users unable to add them to their founders.
On our Open Beta roadmap, one feature we want to add is the ability to re-customize your founders, as you would during onboarding, as a premium feature. If we include new colors in onboarding, the colors would also be included in this feature. If we do not, they will not be included here either.
The pro of inclusion would be a broader opportunity for color economy, and better founder customization as a whole. However! We realize that this inclusion could feel deeply unfair to legacy users, and want to ask how you all feel! If you feel this is upsetting, we want to hear it!
RECORD YOUR RESPONSE HERE: https://forms.gle/mUCbPD8x13z6VDvo8
Thank you everyone!
