I-Pads for Seniors Online Class 4: Linking Library e-Resources to your I-Pad

Want to read a book, but you don’t want to go to the trouble of either going to library to simply burrow one book, or having wait for one to be delivered to your home? Well, your I-Pad can help you with that, by allowing you to link up with your local library’s e-resources. 

But what are library e-resources?

Library e-resources (short for ‘electronic resources) are pieces of digital media owned by a library, that can be viewed or burrowed by a library member from a library’s website. 

These resources range from digitised newspaper articles, archive photos, research articles and journals, videos and e-books (’electronic books’).

However, in order to access these resources on your I-Pad, you first need to be a member of your local library to log on to their digital archives and a working internet connection to access the library website. From then on, you can either simply view the resources or download items such as ebooks to your I-Pad.

One thing to keep in mind in regards to resources such as ebooks is that since you are borrowing online, the resource will generally be ‘returned’ after three weeks.

With these steps, you can access any e-resources on your I-Pad form either your home or whilst you’re on the move.

I-Pads for Seniors Online Class 3: Apps

When you first activate your I-Pad, you find that the main screen contains pre-downloaded icons that open when you tap on them and close when you either press the Home button or the Sleep button. These icons are Apple Apps (short for Application), programs that can be used for entertainment, organisation etc. 

There are more than a million Apps that’s created for a myriad of purposes. However, you only start of with a few. To remedy this, you need to use your  I-Pad to access the Apple App Store, which is identified by this icon;

To demonstrate how to use the App Store to start downloading any apps you like, here’s a tutorial on how to do just that.

I-Pads for Seniors Online Class 2: WHS

Although this class is held online instead of in a classroom, there are still a fair amount of WHS issues you must consider whilst you are using you I-Pad.

These are some examples:

#1- Getting “I-Pad neck” as a result of looking at a mobile device from a 60 degree angle for a fair amount of time.

#2- Make sure not to either charge your I-Pad with a damaged charger of put it in a body of water, as you would likely be electrocuted as a result.

#3- Do not walk whilst you are looking at your I-Pad, since you will likely trip and fall as a result.

I-Pads for Seniors Online Class 1: Introduction

Hey senior students, my name is Zachary Prentice and I’m the Library Assistant overseeing the “I-Pads for Seniors” class at Pearl Cove Library.

In our last session, we: 

Learnt about the I-Pad’s physical features and functions.

Used a wireless network.

And now we will be looking at how to use I-Pad applications (or apps) and how to use I-Pads to connect to library e-resources.
