head in the sky
I’m full of love, and nobody wants it.
Unknown (via blindthoughts)
Greyson had very fond memories of them as children. He’d thought for sure that they had beat the stereotype of orphaned kids. That had always been Greyson’s goal growing up. He didn’t want to be just another sad kid without any parents, and together he and Penny made it through pretty well. When she got adopted, he really hadn’t expected to not see her again. They had their spot to meet, but he couldn’t go back when they switched his homes. He grinned at her, wanting nothing more than to just hug her and make sure she was okay, but he wasn’t sure how well that would go over anymore. “Yeah, that’s what happens when you get all old.” Greyson chuckled and shook his head. “You on the other hand. How much have you grown? Maybe an inch?” He teased her.
penelope ducked her head down for a slight second, flickering her eyes back up at the boy she used to sit together at the park and on days, appreciate the silence that had never once grew awkward between them. quite frankly, penelope was still stuck in the time frame of when her eyes had meet greyson’s through the busy crowd. she couldn’t seem to wrap her head around the fact that he came back, that she found him, that he found her, that they had once again crossed paths. all the girl could do was smile and nod at his teasing remark; her heart quickly filling up with the warm memories and how often grey would mock her height; randomly messing up her hair by nuzzling it with a hand. “i’m getting there,” she softly chuckle, biting onto her thumb as she held onto the red cup with the other. “don’t underestimate me,” a playful warning tone coating her words, “i might just grow a few inch taller than you overnight.” she paused and studied his features further. the last image of how he looked like before he left tucked neatly in her mental scrapbook. “it’s really so nice to see you again grey,” she quietly murmured. “how have you been? tell me all about your adventures.”
I didn’t feel like going to school today
Greyson could remember clearly when they were young, but this was no longer that little girl that he remembered. She’d always been so much smaller than him, a few years younger. But now she looked as if she could pass for just as old as him. It had been a few years, but he hadn’t expected it to make that much of a difference. In fact, when they’d lost contact, he’d assumed that he’d never get to see all the differences. But here she was, and she had to be real. It seemed that was what she was testing too when she reached out and poked him. “I’m real, Pen,” he told her, grinning.
she extracted her hand after touching the tip of his nose - the same way most cartoons would when they dipped their toes into waters to test its temperature; but instead of jumping from it, she was much rather surprised. all this time, after returning to the orphanage to say her thanks and hopefully gather some information, she had thought the chances of meeting him again were slim. she thought he was just a chapter in her book, but here she was, barely a meter away from him. “just making sure,” she whispered, her lips slowly growing into a smile. she couldn’t help but give out an inaudible laugh. she was so tempted to just wrap her arms around him and give him a tight squeeze, but that’d be too awkward, right? considering they have not met for years. you don’t just go up to someone you’ve lost contact with and make such intimate gestures; so she refrained. “you grew, grey.”
Greyson wasn’t a drinker. In fact, he couldn’t remember any time where he’d actually been drunk. He went to parties for the social aspect of them, not for the booze. He found drunk people to be pretty entertaining, and they never paid much mind to him when they were all wasted. He sat back in his chair, tucking his arms behind his neck comfortably. His name was called in the most familiar girlish voice. He sat forward automatically, uneased. When his eyes fell upon her, he remembered the things that he usually tried not to. “Penny?” His eyebrows furrowed. “No way. No.”
penny’s brows quirked up slowly; her eyes fluttered as she kept her gaze on the dark haired boy in front of her. how long has it been? her eyes searched for answers, for clues, but all she could take in were memories back when they were little kids; not that she would ever complain. his features were familiar but they seem all too different for her to believe it was the same boy back at the orphanage. her grip around the plastic red cup loosen as she studied him further, and for a second she almost dropped the alcoholic drink. she couldn’t speak. she couldn’t even move a muscle, but she managed to nod her head slowly when he called out her name. her eyes were slightly widened; a free finger lifted, reaching out to touch his nose to assure herself she wasn’t dreaming. she often does when she misses people.
I moved my bed next to the window so I can watch the sunset every night
“Listen, if someone’s going to play music for everyone to hear, the least they could do is play something good. Like Beyonce.” Greyson let out a laugh, nodding his head along to the music being played anyways. “Everyone loves Beyonce.”
penelope paused; the drink in her hand and its bitterness stirring up a question in her head - one she couldn’t help but wonder from what seem to be a familiar voice. it sounded quite different. it was a lot deeper and mature from when she had last heard it. it took her some time to confront her thoughts, but she finally bucked up the courage to lift her head up; now thinking her eyes are playing tricks on her from possible hallucinations. he seems a lot more older now; though his smile is something penny could never forget. “grey?” she questioned. she swallowed nervously. the thought of mistaking the guy in front of her for someone else and having to explain scared her.
“oh come now, penny,” grace shook her head, waving the apology the younger girl had given her. “you have nothing to apologize for.” in fact, grace was the one that felt a little guilty. penny had visited her quite often when she realized she’d been hospitalized and she could only imagine what it must have been like to go to her room and see it suddenly empty. “in fact i’m sorry. i probably should have made it a point to let you know. told one of the nurses or something …” she chewed on her bottom lip and then laughed. “yeah. my big ol’ too big for me bed. i’ll have to admit it was cozy finally having room to wiggle around.”
she smiled softly at the other blonde; hoping the gesture showed her forgiveness though she didn’t really see why grace should be apologizing. she wasn’t considered family, she wasn’t anyone important like the doctors or nurses, she wasn’t any of her sisters, she was just… penny. “that’s okay, it’s no worries,” she assured grace quickly, not wanting to make it a big deal – even if she did feel silly for jumping into conclusions that day. “i met this guy named thomas, and played our usual game of scrabble – he looked like he really needed it, so its okay.” the sound of grace’s laughter lightened her features, and in that moment laughing was truly contagious. penny chuckled; the mere thought of wiggling in her own bed warming her insides. “getting swallowed up into big mattresses and pillows are one of my favourite things!”
“I wish everyone would stop looking at me like i’m about to fall apart … I just got out of the hospital, I’m not coming back from the grave or something,” Grace huffed as she fiddled with the ends of her still-pink hair. The color was fading and pretty soon she’d be faced with a decision – re-dye it or go back to being blonde. It was something silly to be focusing on, but she’d rather focus on that than all the hovering her mother and others had been doing since her minor heart attack and stay at the hospital. Secret was out: Grace Hudson has a heart defect.
“sorry,” penelope squeaked out of habit. she hasn’t even muttered a word to the older woman, but she felt the need to apologize - no matter if it’s on her behalf or others’; it seems like they were upsetting grace, which isn’t a healthy emotion. “i didn’t know you went home the other day, so instead i bumped into this other patient... but i’m glad you got better. it’s always nice to sleep on your own bed.”
