The Observable Universe – Size Comparison Of Astronomical Objects

The size of astronomical objects are so large and the distances are so great that they quickly exceed human comprehension.
If you thought that the Sun was huge, wait until you see supergiant or hypergiant stars like Betelgeuse, Antares or VV Cephei! They are so astronomically large that only our imagination is able to visualize them.
The sun is the largest object in our solar system, but it is just a medium-sized star among the hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way galaxy.
The Sun is known as a yellow dwarf star. This group of stars are relatively small, containing between 80% and 100% the mass of the Sun. Our star is at the higher end of this group. The official designation is as a G V star.
The sun is nearly a perfect sphere. Its equatorial diameter and its polar diameter differ by only 10 kms. The mean radius of the sun is 696,000 kilometers, which makes its diameter about 1.392 million kms. You could line up 109 Earths across the face of the sun. The sun’s circumference is about 4,366,813 kms.
Astronomers use the terms “solar radius” and “solar mass” to compare large and smaller stars. A solar radius is 690,000 km (432,000 miles) and 1 solar mass is 2 x 1030 kilograms. That’s 2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg.
The size of VY Canis Majoris
VY Canis Majoris (VY CMa) is a red hypergiant star located in the constellation Canis Major. It is one of the largest known stars by solar radius and also one of the most luminous of its type.
Somewhere between 1800 to 2100 Sun’s size-by-side make the diameter of VY Canis Majoris. Which means somewhere between 5,832,000,000 (5.8 billion) to 9,261,000,000 (9.2 billion) Sun’s can fit inside VY Canis Majoris.
It is approximately 1,420 ± 120 solar radii[8] (equal to a diameter of 13.2 astronomical units, or about 1,976,640,000 kilometres (1.22823×109 mi)), and about 1.2 kiloparsecs (3,900 light-years) distant from Earth.
VY CMa is a single star categorized as a semiregular variable and has an estimated period of 2,000 days. It has an average density of 5 to 10 mg/m3.
If placed at the center of the Solar System, VY Canis Majoris’s surface would extend beyond the orbit of Jupiter, although there is still considerable variation in estimates of the radius, with some making it larger than the orbit of Saturn.
