We all just fill out the forms and pretend.” he chuckled “And don’t worry, we didn’t learn about it in school, either.” Curly nodded “Tina will probably find someone. But I think you will too. I don’t think you need to worry about a deal with anyone.”

“Wait, really? Because that means I’ve been asking for help from people all this time for no reason,” he groaned and buried his face in the bear. “You think I will? Curly, you know what I do. No one wants any of that, I can promise you.”

An orphan. Even better. “New York? Been there a few times, not my favorite city in the world but it has it’s moments. What’d you do in New York?”

“Well, if you would believe it,” he leaned in with a playful smile and a laugh at the tip of his tongue, “I was a singing waiter. They have these special restaurants full of Broadway hopefuls, and we sang... And got shitty pay, and very rarely tips.”

“Math is stupid. Luckily I don’t need to do too much. The accountants do most of that work for me. “ he watched as the other man perched himself on the chair “Nibs? That’s an interesting name. You from around here?”

Once his coffee was all gone, Peter was left with a mug to swirl around the table and a danish to try to finish. Thankfully, neither would be hard. “His real name’s Nicholas,” he said with his mouth full before swallowing. “And I grew up in the orphanage here in town. Left when I was sixteen for New York though.”

Oliver listened intently and looked around the lobby, where they were now standing. “Really? Where the hell in New York? You know that’s where my family was, right? Did they ever tell you that at the orphanage?” he asked, unsure why they hadn’t run into each other there at any point. “That’s good to hear though, I’m glad you’ve been doing okay. And it worked out great, but I’m out on my own now, New York got a little stuffy,” he added, hesitating to explain how well off he’d been. He was embarrassed by it.

“Manhattan area-- Wait, you were put in New York? Slightly, we could have had a big reunion!” Peter joked with a small laugh. “Honestly, they never really told us much about where people were sent off to at the orphanage. Because they knew idiots like me existed, and that I would have tried to visit you. You found it stuffy?”

“Peter…” he sighed “I’ve never even dated anyone. I don’t really think I’m the type to settle down. Too…complicated.” he shrugged “BUt you never know. It could happen. I could find someone that will change all of that, but I’m not exactly boyfriend material, much less husband, y’know?” he shook his head, it was a subject he preferred not to think about “Deal with TIna? And what’s that deal?”

“You can be husband material when I’m writing you off in my taxes-- Is that how it works? I honestly don’t know what tax benefits means,” Peter shook his head with a laugh. “Because, you know, I didn’t finish high school, and I’m sure that was taught in economics or something...” When asked about his deal, Peter shrugged, “I figured that we’ve been best friends long enough, if the going got tough, we’d marry each other for retirement just to say we did it. But, she’s too good. Anyone would want to marry her.”

“You are a lot to put up with. But to the right person, none of that will matter. at least, that’s what everyone always says, right?” he leaned back in his chair, cracking his neck. “Some people I feel like aren’t ever destined to settle down. I don’t necessarily get the feeling that you’re one of those people, though.”

It had been an emotional few days, so when Peter’s eyes got watery, he felt incredibly frustrated with himself. This was Curly. Curly absolutely couldn’t see him upset. Peter instead hugged the bear closer to him and rest his cheek on its head. “And what about you? Are you the type to settle down? Or do we need some sort of agreement that if by fifty we’re not married, we marry each other for tax benefits? Feel like my deal with Tina won’t hold up.”

“I just…yes ok.” She said, glancing down at her own mail. “Well yes, but still. I do hope you won’t hold it against me personally. I’m sure you’ll find something great.” She said trying to be positive.

Peter sighed and started to the mailroom door, looking back to her, “You’re a great boss, Wendy, and a great person. I promise, I won’t hold it against you. It’s... Something I’ve gotta hold against me. You’ve given me a lot to think about.”

“Hey, as long as I don’t have to drive myself home tonight I may take you up on that.” he raised a brow, only to blush at the next statement, looking away before turning back to him, an expression of faux sincerity on his face. “Peter Pan, I’ve been in love with you since the day I met you.” He held the illusion for a moment before breaking it, hitting Peter’s shoulder gently “No, you asshat. I meant platonically. Although, what do I know? Some of these people visiting you could love you the other way too.”

He tried to contain laughter as the other offered such a sincere and heartfelt moment. Peter almost believed it, jaw dropping slightly as he listened, but the facade was cleared as his shoulder was hit. Peter scoffed and rubbed himself, “Hey, no calling the guy in the hospital an asshat, asshat. I knew what you meant, but I don’t think there’s anyone around here that could really be in love with me. Too much to put up with.”

“Ah, that good hospital dope. Can’t beat it, am I right?” he joked, nodding “I don’t know all of them, but I can definitely tell you there’s been plenty of people around.You’re a very well loved guy, Peter.”

“Next time they bring the pills in, I’ll just give them to you instead,” Peter winked. After all, if nothing could beat that dope, maybe Curly would take one for the team. “Wait a second, wait a second... Is that a love confession, Curls? You sayin’ you fell in love with me?”

Harry chuckled “honestly, it could go either way there. And don’t sell yourself short, you’d be amazed how unprotective people with that much money are of their funds. They’ll let just about anyone control them as long as it means they don’t have to do the math. “

“Well, math is stupid,” he commented easily, crossing his legs up into the chair as he finished his coffee. “But, when I was younger, I once convinced Nibs that a dime was worth less than a nickel because it was smaller. Then, he took that lesson to heart a little too well...”

“It’s true. She can be terrifying if she wants to be.” he nodded “And don’t worry about it. I’ve been trying to come by but you’ve been so covered up.This is the first time there weren’t a million people waiting to see you. You’re the most popular man in the hospital.” 

“Like a little gremlin or a biting angry fairy,” he joked. “But, yeah, seriously, I think I learned I have more friends than I thought I did... And this hospital is super lax about reporters claiming to be friends to try and come talk to me. But, that cop out there has been pretty good about kicking them out. But... I’ve also been so doped up, I can’t tell you who’s been by.”

Curly smiled as he handed Peter the bear, sitting back in the chair with his hands up in a surrender motion. “I can’t promise I won’t make a crude comment, but I do have enough decency to refrain from one about that right now. I may be the epitome of too soon, but not this too soon. I’m just glad you’re okay.” He let his hands down “besides, I’m pretty sure Tina can sense shifts in your emotions and if I distressed you at all she’d come in here swinging.”

When the other agreed to his conditions, Peter relaxed back into the bed again, holding the bear against his chest. It was a nice comfort to have, and Peter actually had to control his doped up brain to make sure he didn’t actually cuddle it. That would give Curtis far too much fuel. “Good, so you’ll be good or I’ll get a Tina on your ass, and nothing is scarier than that. Thanks for coming today though, Curly... Gives Tina at least a little break.”

Curly sighed at Peter’s reaction, flopping into the chair pulled up to his bedside, setting the bear in his own lap as Peter didn’t take it. “Look, if you don’t want me to be here, I’ll leave. But at least take the bear. “ he held the bear up next to his face as he looked at Peter “The bear never hurt anybody.”

The bear did coax a smile out of Peter, and he actually held his hand out for it. “You’re right, the bear didn’t do anything to me... You can stay, but only because you brought in the bear. One crude comment about--” He glanced out the door at the officer then to where Tina had been before Curtis’s entrance-- “about why we both know I was in that hotel... And you’re out.”

Walking into the hospital with a teddy bear was not something Curtis typically did. But then again, his long time friend didn’t end up in the hospital every day. Peter’s visiting hours had been packed the past couple days but finally there was an opening where he could be with his friend without a million other people in the room. He knocked on the doorframe before entering, holding out the teddy bear to Peter. “I figured you could use something to cuddle.”

Ever since his laptop was brought, Peter had been distracting himself from his situation with lots and lots of Netflix. Currently, he was watching a terrible movie, leaned back against his pillows, and staring at the screen blankly. Maybe, he should have chosen a comedy. When a knock came at the doorway, he removed an earbud and looked up. Seeing Curtis and the bear, he shook his head, “And here I was thinking that I was gonna get a day of peace.”

“It’s the kind of thing only people that are stupid rich would have. But basically I get their charity cut and distribute it to whatever organizations each month. Not a very common profession.”

“So you get paid by stupid rich people? I mean, not stupid rich people, but like stupid rich people,” he clarified even if the other man had introduced the term to the table. “Whatever it is, it sounds cool. Not that I’ll ever be rich enough to have someone do that, or be trusted with money like that.”

Oliver giggled a little bit at Peter’s comment, standing back at that point to look him over. He waved his hand in a sideways motion. “Eh, not seven, but close,” he said with a smirk. “But thanks. How the hell have you been, man? God, it’s been so long, and to both end up back here?” he put a hand on his forehead, still in disbelief he’d run into him. He had so many questions but didn’t want to overwhelm his old friend.

Peter rolled his eyes at the age comment and shook his head. It was weird to see Slightly again, especially now that they were both older. And... He was a solid six inches taller than Peter. It was a little frightening, really. He’d ended up the shortest lost boy somehow. “I’ve been fine, I guess. Staying busy. Lived in New York for about nine years with Tootles, and only recently moved back. You? How’d having a family work out?”

Oliver grew wide eyed as he realized what was going on. He’d been 7 years old when he was adopted, but he’d never forgotten the faces or names of those who were with him at the orphanage. Grinning from ear to ear, he ran to Peter and wrapped his arms around him. “Yes, it’s me!” he confirmed, releasing him and looking into his face. “God, you haven’t changed a bit! It’s great to see you again,” he added.

His confusion only grew as the other man grabbed and hugged him. Were they still this close? Slightly was adopted. That had to mean-- No, he couldn’t think like that. Once a lost boy, always a lost boy. He returned the hug with two solid pats on the other’s back. “Are you saying I still look seven? Because I was just about to say you grew up nicely.”
