Final Personal Evaluation
I must say, this brief was a roller coaster! Mostly due to the current situation of how everything has changed and the way our classes are being set (doing a creative course through zoom can be a tad frustrating!), so for me in the beginning was a bit demotivating. Although i feel i still produced some nice work for the online workshops we had, and some that i totally despise to be totally honest…
I really enjoyed the workshop where we had to go out and see the world in a different way, find things that would represent “beauty in the mundane”, and ones that would show the “line, dot and shape”. The photographs I got from this are very much to my taste, and it was interesting to go out with the perspective of looking at things differently.
Overall I feel like I produced a large amount of work from the workshops by the time we got presented with our brief and what was expected of this unit. By this time, i decided to approach the “beauty in the mundane” theme in a different way, using mundane objects and turning them into something else, into life creatures, giving them the dark visual effect and shadows, with a hint of syfy connotation to them, with which i’m very satisfied with the results. The result of the photos for these were so satisfactory to me that it made it a real struggle to create prints with the same visual impact as the photographs!
I decided to explore these prints with Risograph, being that it would be easy to create similar prints with different layers, but also wanted to challenge myself with using screen printing with the same stencils. For the Screen prints, and because i decided to use A3 size stencil, and i was only able to use screens that are not much bigger than that, it was hard to create perfect prints (without ink missing or without it bleeding in the paper), some of it created happy accidents, some not so much, but over all, i am please with the results and i feel i still managed to get some of that visual impact i desired similar to the photos.
I feel that if this was a course that was being held the “regular” way (classes in college, you know...like before the Pandemic?) i would have gotten much better results and would have had more time to work on this brief, i would have been able to maybe create a variety of backgrounds to which to print on, as i would have the equipment and material more available than i have from home, so it was somehow a defiant task, but one i feel i overcome the best i could, and had positive results, as well as positive feedback from other.
