"Hi! I'm a PDQ-88b securitron, but you can call me Yes Man!"
"A guy called Benny reprogrammed me! To be nice! Very, very nice!"
"I'm incapable of saying no to any of your ideas! So ask me questions! I love questions!"
It had been about a week since things had returned to normal, business being conducted and plans being made. Really the only difference was the closeness between the two, at least on L’s side. If you thought they were conjoined at Yes Man’s hip before, well it was a lot worse now! They always wanted to be around him, really only leaving if asked or needing to go get things done.
This morning was no different, L sat in the penthouse right next to the window. They were squinting at the outside, almost suspicious. Today was odd as the sky was much darker than it usually was, grey instead of the usual harsh sunny sky. Seemed the entirety of the Mojave was covered in this gloomy weather.
A loud rumble of something came from the sky, L jumping slightly. They pressed their face closer to the glass, looking outside even harder.
“The air smells weird out there.”
"It looks strange, too." He went up to the window, staring up at the sky. His eyes narrowed. This didn't seem right. He wasn't entirely sure what was going on, he wasn't exactly a weather expert. It wasn't super relevant to his job and location, after all. He tilted his head.
Drops of water began to tap against the glass. Yes Man reached up, gently tapping the glass with one of his claws where one of the bits of water rolled down.
The shower started gradually, the rain barely there, just minuscule droplets of water covering the desert below.
L moved to be sitting on their knees, palms pressed against the glass as they looked out. Despite the suspicious look they were giving they had a sincere interest.
“Huh…..” they looked closer. “I wonder if it’ll get more intense. Either way, we’ll be fine in here.”
It didn’t rain much in the Mojave. The place was a desert before the war and it continued to be one after. That’s not to say that rain never happened, but it was quite far between storms and light showers, sometimes months at a time. Sometimes longer.
"It seems rather unusual. Do you think it's a sign of something else?" He hadn't been out long enough to realize that this happened every now and then here. He looked at L. "I mean, it could just be that the Mojave was due for some water." He looked out of the window again.
They turned to look at him, standing up so they could not so subtly inch closer to their friend's side. "Maybe, maybe not. It does this from time to time, but not all that often. Might be a light shower, might be a storm. Might last for a few minutes, might take the entire day. The weather can be surprisingly unpredictable." Their tone and body language was much more relaxed than it had been just mere moments ago, shoulders relaxed as they leaned against him.
Those blue eyes of theirs watched the drizzle get harsher than light sprinkles, a beautiful sheet covering the pavement and world below in much needed moister. He couldn't smell the change in weather but they could, and that scent was quite nice. The sound, the smell, the sight, the company. This was nice.
He reached down, patting the top of their head as he watched the rain. It tapped against the glass, blurring the view and melting lights below into indistinct colors. People could barely be seen rushing into nearby buildings to avoid being soaked by the torrent. "I see a new thing every single day, it seems."
"And I'm glad I get to see you witness new things," they chuckled, leaning into his touch even as it ruffled their hair.
Things would be silent a moment as the two simply watched the pour. It would be this way, a comfortable silence. L was so happy to share this moment with him. Things would be fine, it didnt seem like the storm would escalate too much further.....hopefully.
"Hey, are the securitrons down there alright?"
"I would certainly hope so! House built us for all kinds of conditions, surely a little rain wouldn't be able to take any securitrons down!" He looked down at the city below as he spoke. "..I hope it wouldn't." He decided he would wait for the others to test that out.
The air was filled with the sound of the rain falling against the window panes, a soft yet constant pitter patter. A soft breeze blew along with the wind, slanting the drops and ruffling the feathers of the palms and shrubbery below. The streets had mostly emptied out by now, even the workers for Gomorrah next door had gone inside.
There was something beautiful yet a tad lonely about the empty streets below. The strip, and much of the mojave towns for that matter, were rarely empty. People usually were bustling to and fro, going from building to building be it for business or pleasure. The rain had brought a rare sight indeed.
L made their way over to the console, checking the terminal as they looked for a way to potentially turn on some of the Lucky 38's lights a little early. As they worked they continued their conversation with Yes Man.
"Well," they tilted their head, "if we find out that they're fine, would you care to go for a little stroll with me?"
"You know I'd love to!" He smiled. He watched them mess with the settings of the terminal. The lights soon turned on, reflected in the puddles in the street below. It joined the rest of the lights on the strip, illuminating an empty street. It seemed no one wanted to risk their nice suits or dresses on a walk in the downpour.
They seemed proud of themselves once the lights came on. The slickness of the ground combined with the dark sky gave the strip a new type of glow. They quite liked it.
Their heels clacked against the ground as they went right back to Yes Man's side. L always wore their green dress when they weren't going anywhere. It was almost amusing that they chose such an outfit to be their casual look.
But there they stood, looking down at the strip below while standing next to their friend.
"I can't really remember the last time it rained. Its possible that you were still just another securitron amongst the ranks when it last happened. Its strange to think about, isn't it?"
"It is strange. I don't remember anything before I woke up in the workshop and understood my new programming! Maybe it's better that way, though!"
"I'd say there's a silver lining to it. Means that you get to experience so many things for the first time. It really is a wonderful thing to see something new."
The rain was a fairly consistent drizzle. It had been going on for a little while now, long enough to suggest that the rest of the day would be wet.
L smoothed out the folds in their skirt, absentmindedly humming a tune. They themselves were quite comfortable with where they were. No hurry, no business, no danger. They cherished these peaceful moments.
"I suppose you're right!" He looked at them again. This was nice. They didn't have to worry about anything. And perhaps any business they would concern themselves with had been taken from them by the rain, but that wasn't a bad thing. Not when they were good company by themselves. He looked at the street. "Looks like there might be more mud about than any of us are used to."
“I’d imagine so. All that asphalt and concrete can’t be good for soaking up that water. Not to mention how hard the sand is usually.” They turned to him with a grin. “Wanna go for a walk?”
They held out their hand towards him, amusement written all over their face.
"I'd love to." He took their hand. The other securitrons didn't seem to be having any issues, so surely he wouldn't! He glanced at their choice of footwear. "Those might not be the best choice for a rainy walk, friend!" He didn't exactly have feet, though, so what did he know? Maybe they were perfect.
They gave a bit of a snicker, fingers wrapping around his claw as best as they could before leading him up to the elevator to head down.
“That’s what makes it fun! Besides, I doubt there’s anything terribly well suited to the weather.”
The elevator hummed as it started the decent to the casino lobby. L looked quite pleased with this current arrangement, squeezed together in the elevator with their friend, hand in hand, and about to go do something silly.
"I suppose not, especially in a place like this." He did wonder what the laughter was about, but he wasn't too worried about it. The walk was sure to be nice, the two of them going off together as friends.
He rolled out of the elevator on the casino floor, holding their hand.
Across the carpet and out the doors they went. The potter patter of the rain greeted them more strongly now that they were practically in it. It bounced off the signs and roofs of the buildings, it fell to the sidewalk and roads where puddles formed from what couldn’t be absorbed. The whole world seemed different somehow.
L’s smile widened as they took a step to head into the newish weather. The water was slightly cool, a pleasant temperature, and gentle when it hit their skin. When it hit the securitrons though there was a different sound then when it would hit L or the ground. A metallic one, soft but soothing. They started walking further into the strip.
As the water absorbed into L’s dress and hair the colors darkened.
He followed them out, the rain tapping on his top. The water wasn't getting into anything important, so he didn't mind it. It was nice, actually. He found himself having to slow on the wet streets, his wheel not able to keep as much traction from the slick ground.
They gladly slowed to mach his pace, enjoying the feeling of the rain on their skin. It was honestly a refreshing change from the usual harshness of the mojave's climate.
They would probably stay on or around the strip for securities sake. Who knows how the beasts outside could be acting in this weather, nor was Freeside the best place to be unarmed. L didn't want to make Yes Man protect them.
As they passed through a puddle they couldn't help but give a soft chuckle, shaking their head.
"If someone had asked me even just six or so months ago where I'd be right now, I wouldn't have even fathomed I'd be here right now, strolling through the rain with my best friend while we prep something big. I uh-" they rubbed the back of their neck, hair growing slicker with moister, "-I never really stayed around one place long. Solitary mercenary. I moved wherever I was needed and I mostly worked alone. But-" they looked up at Yes Man, "-I wouldn't trade this for anything. I know we haven't known each other for terribly long, less than a year, but being with you has helped me find a new sense of purpose."
He listened, looking down at them with his usual smile. He pulled them into a hug, some water dripping off the top of his head as he had to lean over a little. "I'm happy to be able to give you that, friend." He let them go after a little bit.
L returned the embrace despite the slickness of the metal. The rain really did change texture in ways you might not think about. Wet.
He was given a small smile, L seeming quite joyous. This little walk had been quite joyous, even if they were drenched now.
They sneezed slightly, shaking their head a bit to orient themselves.
“Oof, maybe we should head back soon.”
"Oh, are you getting sick?" He had heard of people getting a cold after being in the rain, but he wasn't sure if that was true. He supposed maybe L would know better, since clearly they would have that experience. "We should get you back inside!"
“Oh I’ll be fine. At worst I might get a little cold. We can still wander for a while. This is such a rare moment.”
They interlocked their fingers with his as best as they could, leaning against his metal frame with a smile. L didn’t want this moment to end, a bit of selfish greed on their part.
“Just a few more moments wouldn’t hurt.”
"Alright, we can take some extra time, then." He smiled at them. He trusted them to know whether they would be okay or not. He was careful with their hand in his, since his claws were a lot bigger than any of their fingers. He didn't want to somehow hurt them.
Maybe it would be fine, maybe not. L was willing to roll that dice. Last luck had always seemed to favor them, so things should turn out fine.
It’s hard to say how much longer their walk lasted. It could’ve been a couple minutes to half an hour, but by the end it was undeniable that the walk was over. Yes Man’s human was soaked to the very bone and L couldn’t really deny how the waterlogged pumps were growing quite uncomfortable.
They both tracked puddles into the casino lobby, the carpet unable to soak up the excess water quick enough. They had been out there for quite some time after all. Any fluff to L’s hair or garments were gone now, instead heavy and flat. It was a tad amusing, but definitely gave an idea on what the effects of water could do.
Perhaps water would be more abundant if they got control of the dam?
He made a note of the puddles and that they might need to be dried up to prevent mold. He wasn't too worried about that right now, though. L clearly needed to get warm and dry. "How about you change into some dry clothes, just to be safe?"

"Ugh, mo boots are starting to be a tad too worn." L grumbled as they inspected the boots on their feet. Those green things had certainly seen better days. "I'm going to go see about getting them repaired. Need anything while I'm out?"
"I don't believe I do, but thank you!!"
“Alrighty. I’ll be heading out for a bit then. I’ll be home by tonight at the latest. And if I’m not, check the Ace Theater.” They have a wink and a chuckle before leaving.

"I don't believe I do, but thank you!!"

If someone gave you an order and told you that that order couldn’t be overridden except for certain circumstances, could someone override it?
Example:
Person one) “You must do A unless B”
Person two) “Stop doing A ”
"It sure could be overridden! Really, Benny didn't think this all through when he programmed me."
i think you'd look very spiffy in a bow tie yes man! would you have fun wearing a bow tie and hitting the strip?
"I think that sounds fun! Thank you very much!"
If you ever got the chance to, would you want to wear clothes?
Though it would probably be more so accessories since I’d assume a securitron unit’s bulky frame would make clothes difficult
"I might consider it! If someone dressed me up, I wouldn't have any objections, I can't! I have worn a few hats in my time!"
Do you have any dreams?
"Nope! Anytime I'm shut off, I experience nothingness!"
I bet the walls between the workshop and Benny's room aren't all that thick. You hear any juicy gossip or secrets?
"Oh, trust me, even if the walls weren't thin, he tells me a lot! Did you hear the one about the White Gloves?"

"I was explicitly told not to! So I can't!"
